It's 260 miles from Dayton to Pittsburgh, so that's more likely than not going to be a bus trip for whomever wins that game.

As I understand it, teams typically will book charter flights via the NCAA's official travel agency, but, as I saw during the D2 football playoffs, a few of the Texas/Oklahoma/Arkansas schools would use WN. I guess if teams have a preferred carrier, as is the case with most Big 12 schools (particularly, the Texas schools, the Okie schools and the University of Kansas with WN), they can make such arrangements.

How does this work for the Women's Tournament? I know Oklahoma Women are playing in CLL on Friday. Do they bus even if it's ~500mi?

It has nothing to do with "preferred" carriers, as the NCAA chooses the carriers and makes the arrangements with very few exceptions (e.g. Kentucky self-paid to fly to Indianapolis a few years ago). You probably see more WN charters among Big 12 schools simply because WN flies to virtually every Big 12 city.

I don't think it's exclusive to WN stations, since one of the Kansas schools (KU or Kansas State) would fly WN out of Topeka (FOE) instead of MCI. WN does fly to any airport in the US - WN station or not - which can support 737 operations. I'm curious if those flights are subject to reimbursement by the NCAA or not...

It also generally used to be more frequent in the past where the band/cheer squads traveled separate from team--even by plane. I was in band and back in 2011 NCAA Tourney, we (band/cheer) flew a day later than the team--we got a Regional Jet with a business class configuration (wider leather seats, extra legroom, seats facing another with tables in between, etc.). Every trip I was on after that, we were on a B737/A319/MD88 size aircraft with the team.
However, UMBC is still 430 miles away, so I imagine band/cheer would follow the same travel mode as team. Perhaps they're flying later, or UMBC decided not to send a band (I've seen that before too and they "rent" a local HS or college band and give them some team shirts to wear). I noticed that there were some UD pep band shirts in either the LIU-Brooklyn or Radford band last night. If UMBC decided not to send a band, then maybe the whole travel party could indeed fit on a CRJ.

I wonder that if the trip is between two WN stations, WN is simply able to offer the NCAA the best price for the charter as it has no positioning costs.
