Virgin America Farewell Flight 24 April VX 1948 SFO-LAX

Tue Mar 13, 2018 5:59 pm

With the Alaska/Virgin America acquisition, the Sabre turn-over on the 25th of April is essentially the sales end of Virgin America as a marketing brand. I'm not sure if that means all Virgin America signage and branding will be gone on the 25th, but it seems that Virgin America VX 1948 is becoming the "farewell" flight for all the Virgin fans out there. The actual "Final" flight is a private "founders flight" from LAX to SFO.

Alaska has said on twitter that there will be something commemorate the flight, but they're being quiet. This image appeared on a frequent flyer board, so hopefully this turns into a party flight (someone commented the plane looks like an A330). The flight is normally an Airbus A320 and is showing an Airbus A321 in the system, so apparently something is in the works.

Yes, almost all VX branding will be gone overnight on or about April 25th. Obviously, the VX planes will take some time to repaint and reconfigure. But, my understanding is that stations will be fully transformed to Alaska branding overnight.

That plane doesn't merely "look" like an A330, it certainly IS an A330.
I don't take that fact to mean that any particularly special is going to happen; at least, not with an A330.
Or maybe Sir Richard will take that opportunity to announce his rebooting of the brand with a new US airline: Second Virgin.

Not really a Virgin the second time around, are you? ;)

But seriously, I hope they have a nice going away celebration for the airline. it certainly will be missed a lot!

The "Redwood" callsign is gone, right? Or are they saying this will be the last flight, Redwood 1948?

Would be nice if the other two Virgin sister airlines, VS and VA send VX off at LAX. Would be the last time all three Virgin brands operate together at an airport.

That's what I thought. I would be neat to see them break that out one last time for this flight.

Never mind the fact that VX has never operated A330s, hence the A330 in the promo.

All joking aside, I wouldn't be surprised if this actually was the case because airports are busy enough as they are and using AS for a VX plane is going to confuse the hell out of both ATC and pilots who already have enough problems to deal with. The idea I think makes the most sense is that if your plane says Alaska, your callsign is Alaska, if your plane says Virgin America, your callsign is Redwood. When it gets repainted, you switch.

So what you really meant to say is that you, or the group of people in which you include yourself, arranged for the aforementioned image to appear on the aforementioned frequent-flyer board?

Image isnt mine, nor proctored by anyone at Flyertalk. Our stuff (images or proofs of the things being made) hasnt been posted publicly, as far as I know.

But yes, Im one of the Alaska frequent flyers that felt VX needed a better send off.

...it'd be far worse and more confusing to just start making up your callsigns. ATC can deal with it. It's not the first time a merger in recent years has happened and the paint differs from the callsign. Or any day of the week where SkyWest et al. on a flight strip could be any wild variety of paint.

I know this topic hasn't had a post for days (Flyertalk's discussion is a fair bit more active, including confirmation that AS is going to do something special not only for this flight but also flight 1182 to EWR, but I'm not a member there), but before this past Easter weekend the price dropped to $52 and was still that price tonight, so I took it, in fact the entire day shows up as $52 on SFO-LAX while the SFO-EWR flight (1182) shows up for $144.

There isn't however an AS flight early enough on Wednesday morning back to SFO for my 9:35 AM class (the earliest is AS 1927 at 9AM), so I'm probably going to take either UA or WN for one of the pre-7AM departures.

VX 1948 is booked to over 75% now... it should be a fun avgeek/frequent flyer party!

the flight has also moved to a 9:32PM departure time, making it the *official* final revenue departure for Virgin America.

For those of us who loved Virgin America, today is a sad day. Although rueful, we are celebrating a glorious 10 years and will be on the final flight tonight, VX 1948, leaving SFO at 9:32 and bound for LAX. Jess and I will make the quick trip up to SFO this afternoon, and then enjoy the festivities all through the night. We're sitting in 12D&E. If you're going to be on board, or at SFO, please be sure to introduce yourself and say hi. PS - as someone who flies Alaska 1-2x/week, I am delighted with the changes I've seen as a result of the merger, and look forward to Alaska carrying the Virgin torch into the future...

And N922VA has just touched down at LAX at the end of this flight from SFO. Congrats to those a.netters who were able to take part in this flight. I was only able to track it during the last few minutes of the flight from my home computer...would certainly like to have been able to take part.

Had a great time! Thanks to the organizers and Alaska. Glad I got to make my first VX flight after waiting since before the airline launched :) Sadly my seat's chat was not working so missed out on all of that, but my row-mates more than kept me entertained. Shout out to the woman in 21C who probably wins the award for most enthusiasm on the plane, I didn't get her name though!

They did a great job and the memorabilia package was very impressive. My impression was that the majority of pax were VX employees. They created a great atmosphere and a flight that I will always remember. Hopefully AS treats them well!

What a somber moment. Alaska cherry picks some of the best. Anyone remember Jet America? That airline was the Virgin America of the 80's. It's sad to see the airline go, but one has to really wonder what the future held for the airline. I am still shocked Virgin chose SFO and LAX as their hubs.

Gotta hand it to them. They brought class back into flying. They sure did it right in terms of customer service.

I know Branson was not happy. Is he still kicking around the idea of trying another US Based airline?

Thanks for the compliments, glad you guys had a good time. We had an amazing team with a lot of behind-the-scenes help.

We are working on a Facebook page today for everyone to share photos (although the chatroom pics may need to be sensored a bit...). Will post the URL when its ready (although if you were there, you can figure it out...)

15A here, it was a blast that exceeded my expectations, and I already had lofty expectations considering it was VX (if my username is a clear signal), though certainly helped by Alaska giving effectively free reign including opening the AS Lounge at LAX to anyone on the flight and past its normal operating blurs. (The woman in 15C was actually one of the lounge staff taking us in after we arrived.) Sentimentally, I thought it was neat how N922VA did the final flight because it was actually my first A321neo on SFO-DCA last August, making it my first and last VX A321. (Part of me might've hoped it was N923VA last night, just because I haven't logged it yet.)

Echoing the remarks on the grassroots effort for the merch (someone I spoke to at VX's HQ the day before was really excited to talk about it when I said I was on the flight), I just had to donate toward that. Also had a bunch of people gushing over my shirt, some were even emotionally touched, but really it was nice just to spread and deal in good feelings.

I don't have a report this soon (in fact I've been awake since midday yesterday), just a stream of Tweets under the #VXfarewell tag. I could hardly keep that up while also just partaking.

I can say though that after the welcome announcement into LAX after rollout, the safety video was played again for us to sing along to. The whole thing was wild. It's also the first time I've participated in an event of this type, though.

Between the takeoff and landing I've only gotten around to uploading the takeoff (did so on the ViaSat WiFi). That said I'm sure there are other videos floating around.
