I spoke to a BA 787 pilot onboard a flight on DEL. He told me that the BA piliots had taken the idea of a nonstop BA LHR to PER service to BA management. There was no interest.

As it should be - pilots shouldn't be setting the route map - thats the job of the strategy and route profitability team.....

That is a gross misrepresentation of the conversation of the we had, and also grossly unfair to BA’s pilots. BA pilots do not ‘set the route map’ and at no point during the conversation did he suggest anything like that. The conversation, as I remember it, was more along the lines of the pilots trying to exploit and maximise the features of BA’s newest aircraft, to what they thought might be to the benefit of the company.

He struck me, in his enthusiasm for the new aircraft, as something akin to a child with a new toy - it was genuine and heartfelt. It was, in my belief, in the spirit of that enthusiasm that the idea was raised by the pilots with BA management. If BA has a company environment that welcomes and promotes such dialogue between employees and management, then well done BA, I say.
I only turn left when boarding aircraft. Well, mostly. All right, sometimes. OH OKAY - rarely.

Your comment "There was no interest" is perhaps as much a misrepresentation as mine was - suggesting that you think that management dismissed the pilots unfairly....

Pilots are skilled at flying. As to route planning, there are other people that are skilled in that. Im all for employee engagement but it seems that certain parts of airlines think they know more about things than others and that they have a right to be heard. Why do the baggage handlers not have the same rights? Or the caterers? IF the pilots were suggesting new ways of flying then all credence to them.

They can suggest all they want re new routes, but they have to realise theyre not the experts in the company that makes these decisions, even though they do know a bit about the business. I think it is unfair to paint management as ignorant of pilot views in this when they are not the experts.

As you say, child with a new toy. As we have seen, making decisions based on emotions is the undoing of many businesses, especially airlines. Let the experts do it.

Speaking of weather its will around 28 degrees today, its overcast and there is the forecast of a possible light shower.

It also likely to a bit bumpy on the first couple hours of the flight. There is a cyclone off the northwest of the coast, its the same one that hit Darwin a week ago. It has weakened significantly over the past 24-36 hours from a Category 5 to Category 1

I know! I checked in at a machine the other week in the terminal and it gave me an option for SIN and LHR. Very odd. Brought a smile to my face though.

Currently cruising at FL260. Pretty strong headwinds The Qatar A380 going the opposite direction has a GS of 616 kts at FL390. The preceding QF777 was as high as FL340 when I last checked but has since descended to FL280.

MEL QF9 origining pax clear immigration in MEL. PER is treated as an Intl-Intl transit stop.

On the return pax continuing to MEL on QF10 stay in the Intl zone and clear immigration and customs in MEL.

Bit of an awkward place to get photos unless you’re in the “international” bit.

I know someone behind the scenes, so hopefully we will get a few snaps before they go.

To put that into perspective according to the ACAP on Boeings website the 787-9 has a MTOW of 254t and usuable fuel capacity of 101.46t.

From the fuel perspective, they're expecting to burn 5.42t of fuel per hour. Adding up the diversion fuel (my guess is MAN) and contingency I bet they'll have a full tank out of PER.
