To put that into perspective according to the ACAP on Boeings website the 787-9 has a MTOW of 254t and usuable fuel capacity of 101.46t.

From the fuel perspective, they're expecting to burn 5.42t of fuel per hour. Adding up the diversion fuel (my guess is MAN) and contingency I bet they'll have a full tank out of PER.

Michael

Great to get those numbers even before the first flight. With OEW of about 128-129t of a usual 787-9 we get something like 20-22t payload. This is tight with 236 pax(and 42 heavy J seats), but we knew this already. Incredible to be able to do it, at all.

Out of curiosity, what are QF's habitual alternates in Western Europe? I know they've used LCA on more than one occasion on the past between LHR and DXB as it can take an A388 and doesn't have the same traffic restrictions as IST, but in the event of a delay into LHR causing a fuel-state concern it would be interesting to know if they'd use MAN or perhaps a different London airport given the 789's smaller size and lower weight, balanced against the need to re-accomodate passengers.

Interestingly there are now two QF9s in the air. VH-ZND which just took off from PER and A380 VH-OQK currently crossing into German airspace on the last A380 operated QF9 through DXB.

Strange (for me anyway) to be watching QF9 fly PER-LHR now as when I flew it not all that long ago it was on VH-OQL via SIN!

Odd that one hasn't been given a different callsign at least - like when a held-up flight gets the "D" suffix - but I suppose since they're different aircraft types and they're never going to be in the same FIR at the same time the chances of confusion are slim...

Of interest on FR24 is that there is a Scoot 787-9 that left Perth 8 minutes after QF9, it is already at 39450feet, while QF9 is at just now at FL340. The weight of fuel showing its effect!

There is also an Etihad 787-9 about 1.5hrs ahead of QF9 at the same alititue and speed as QF9. There is a bit of a difference between a 4hr hop to Singapore and a 10-17hr flight.

It’s not uncommon to see Scoot climb straight to FL430 out of PER, but usually on the 788

FR24 showing ZND now abeam Dirk Hartog Island (SW of Carnavon CVQ/YCAR) at FL330, vertical speed averaging 0 ft/min (that is, it's switching back and forward between + and -64), heading 328°, ground speed 503 kts. Current ETA for landing at LHR is 0324Z, 15h22 from now, against 0410 scheduled.

TR9 for SIN, also a 789 (9V-OJF), is currently ESE of ZND at FL400 on 337° showing ground speed of 492 kts.

Don't forget that Britain, tonight, goes forward an hour! So the eta is 04:24BST against the 05:10 Scheduled. Impressive. Pitty that i can't find it on FR24.

Ooh, I'd forgotten haha! Indeed at 0100Z the UK will move to UTC +1.

You can find it on FR24 by searching VH-ZND or QF9, or simply by looking just off the coast of the Western Australia :p

They are out of direct FR24 range now with the position being estimated. Do you have the estimations setting turned on?

FR24 looking a bit screwy, now showing estimated arrival time of 03:06.

Ah, just noticed that FR24 is still showing arrival times in GMT whereas we switch to BST tonight, so actual arrival will be one hour 'later' than shown.

There is plenty of time over the next 15 hours but they can't land before 0432 Local, although the crew will know that so will manage speed accordingly

Shame NZ are using the Hifly A340s currently from PER. Would have been 3 787-9 departures in the space of 13 minutes. With a 4th (EY) not too much earlier.

Why was this new flight scheduled a couple of hours later out of Perth. Then it would land at a more reasonable time in London.I am sure there is a good reason but can't think of it.

Not sure if the Australian rest rules are similar to the US rest rules. To compare the PER-LHR route to United’s SFO-SIN route, the flight deck crew arrives at 6:45, has a 50:15 layover and departs at 9:00 on the third day. So essentially arrive at 6:45 am on a Monday and depart at 9:00 am on Wednesday.

ETA is jumping around a bit. 10 minutes here and there.
Currently with the +1 time change it is scheduled to land at LHR at about 3:34 am
That is of course assuming it maintains roughly this speed for the duration of the flight.

Alan Joyce has told reporters in PER earlier today that PER-LHR was already returning economic dividends

Mr Joyce revealed demand for the historic route was already returning economic dividends to his airline, a rarity for freshly introduced flights.
“In our forward bookings already we can see that 60 per cent of the traffic on this service is going from London to Perth with only 40 per cent connecting onwards to the rest of the network,” he said.
“Of the traffic that is coming here to Perth, 15 per cent is staying for three days or more already and that is before we really get in to promoting the service.”

I was thinking of heading down to Heathrow tomorrow to film the departure, however looking at the winds it looks like there’s a good chance of departure from 09R, so not the best for filming. Anyone else heading to watch the departure?

Also, taking into account the 1 hour time change, is it scheduled for departure at 12:15 or 13:15?

Remember QF only have 236 seats vs EY's 299. So potentially a lot lighter pax wise, although I imagine the fuel will make up for a lot of it.

Well EY sends a 2 class 789 to PER, 299 seats (28J271Y), though having said that their loads have been relatively poor of late and dropping the service back to A332 by middle of April, QF probably will be trying to get to a higher level as soon as its safe to do so to burn less fuel and by the looks of things they are going to step climb at 1000feet increments rather than 2000 feet increments

Yes it is amazing. Considering EY487 which departed PER about 2 hours before QF9 is currently sitting at FL360

And the same equipment too! Is it a configuration thing?

Remember QF only have 236 seats vs EY's 299. So potentially a lot lighter pax wise, although I imagine the fuel will make up for a lot of it.

Yea I figured it'd be something like that.

Well I imagine they'd want to burn fuel as conservatively as possible, so that makes sense.
