The only picture ever taken of Concorde flying at Mach 2

Thu Mar 22, 2018 2:09 am

I searched but didn't see this posted - truly an amazing picture.

The only picture ever taken of Concorde flying at Mach 2 (1,350 mph). Taken in April 1985 by Adrian Meredith, from an RAF Tornado attack fighter, which only rendezvoused with Concorde for 4 minutes over the Irish Sea: The Tornado was rapidly running out of fuel, struggling to keep up with Concorde at Mach 2.

Love it, and G-BOAG was coincidentally the first Concorde I ever saw for real, albeit moving very much slower at the time and in her 'British' Negus colours.

Superb photograph. This is what air to air photography really is, not helicopters hovering near an airport.

The curvature of the earth, the darkness of the sky. Amazing.

Is the flare in the upper left corner the sun? or is it glare off the inside of the RAF Tornado's canopy?

Looking at where the shade is at on the aircraft, I'd guess there is a good chance it is the sun.

That would be correct. I saw her fly in to Boeing Field, she did several laps around SEA before landing at BFI. I was in the C concourse waiting for a flight to Orange County. EVERYONE in the terminal stopped what they were doing to see it. Little did my young mind know at the time that that would be the one and only time I would see a condorde doing what she was made for, flying. I’ve seen her at the museum of flight countless times, but nothing beats the wonder of seeing such a beautiful aircraft slice through the air.

Hard to believe it's been 15 years now since many of us were scrambling to buy the last tickets on the British Airways farewell flights. It already feels like the long bygone era it is.

What is the distortion after the 15th window which blurs the 16th? Angle of the sun seems about right but with the sun at that angle, would the plane be so bright on the left.

For those interested, I found (and purchased) a copy of the print here. It is signed by Mike Bannister, Chief Concorde Pilot, and Adrian Meredith, Photographer - 16x12. I have zero affiliation with the site, I just happened upon it while looking for more details of the pic.

Beautiful photography - almost looks like a retro render of what the Concorde would look like prior to build. Something perfectly futuristic about the Concorde still!

This picture just confirms it. Aviation is going backwards. Think about it for a minute. First discussed in 1962, (year I was born), designed from 1965 onwards, flew in 1969. It's now 2018 ffs!

Now all we get are the MAX and NEO with ironing board seats; slower, lower and tackier. Designed using MS Paint...

I found it very surprising that this would be the only picture. However, at least after having just unsuccesfully googled "Concorde Mach 2 picture" it may actually be true! It is comforting that this one picture is aesthetically pleasing as well!

I too spent a lot of time trying to find another similar shot - but to no avail. Surprising really - but when one considers the speed, I suppose not.

Have you ever noticed that all the best in-flight Concorde shots including the formation flight are always back lit? :(

It wasn't like the RAF Tornado pilot had a big time window to take shots from multiple angles, considering the fuel it burned to reach FL600, fly at Mach 2+, align with the Concorde, and leaving enough fuel to return to base. They may have taken more shots from this angle but I guess this was the best one.

Goes to show how, even though we praised the Concorde a lot, still do not give it enough credit for flying so "effortlessly" at such speeds and heights whilst most fighter jets could barely keep up for long.

For the world, its retirement was and still continue to be the single biggest loss of technological marvel, with bleak chances of something even remotely similar (commercially viable -wise) to return to the skies for at least the near future.

I thank my father for giving me a chance to spot this beautiful pointy bird at LHR back in 2001 as an excited kid and man that was the most futuristic, beautiful and unique object of metal I have ever seen to this day. Amen!

BOAG is also the Concorde I flew on. BA-002. JFK-LHR. 6 months later I was on her again at KBFI as a museum exibihit. The toilet I used all preserved under plexiglass.

The effortlessness is right - there is a nice story about an SR-71 presentation, saying that the Blackbird had done more supersonic hours than the rest of the world's aircraft. They were then corrected by a Brit (or maybe Frenchman) saying that Concorde had done more supersonic hours than all the rest of the world's aircraft, including the Blackbird. The (US) presenter had forgotten to look at commercial flights as well as military....

Yes, but there is a lot to be said for the fact that I know my niece and nephew, a pleasure beyond measure made possible by the economics of those much less aesthetically pleasing designs.

That’s a model. Both not life size and no idea where it went. There is a real Concorde at LHR though. If you are in the queue for takeoff RWY 27L you can see it at the corner of BA Maintenance.

One of the most beautiful aircraft ever, in cruise flight. Simply amazing. Thank you for sharing!

Perhaps the only other aircraft that might have been able to fly with her for any significant period of time, aside from a sister Concorde, would be the SR-71. The B-1 Lancer could only flight at Mach 1.25.

Nice pic, I am glad I am old enough to remember she was the way Bankers, sheikhs, and assortment of "famous" crossed the Atlantic. British Airways did her right.

It does make one wander (and yes there are countless threads on how fickle the mx on Concorde was) if Airbus would had done a low level NEO on her with non afterburner supersonic cruise engines, how much less fuel would it had consumed. Concorde had a aero drag problem too.

I too am surpised there are not more "at cruise" air to air pics.

I believe the MiG-25 / -31 should be able to stay at Mach 2 for some time too. The MiG-31 has a published range of at least 720 km at Mach 2.35, about 20 minutes.

Without getting too technical (you can search the details), Concord did not fly at a set cruise altitude. Concorde did what was referred to as a 'cruise climb' on transatlantic flights where the autopilot was set to allow the plane to climb slowly as fuel was burned and weight reduced. Usually started in the mid/high FL400s and often reached to the high FL500s before top of descent. This was also part of the freedom of having no other aircraft on the same track in the altitude band. There were three sets of transatlantic tracks if I recall correctly, SN1, SN2 and SN3 with probably a max of 1 or 2 planes at any time on any one of the them. One was for westbound, one for east and one spare. Also there was no weather at these altitudes so tracks did not need to change with daily jetstream movements.

Concorde II NEO, powered by four EJ200 (Typhoon) engines. Less thrust yes, but less fuel/weight needed and greater range.

LHR - LAX/SFO would be good, subsonic over the US so as not to frighten the locals.

Beautiful piece of history, nice catch. Sorry as hell I missed that ride. Saw it many times and once was very fortunate to be sitting left side of a plane departing next in line to Concorde. The Captain came on and advised everyone of what was about to happen. The noise and the afterburners lighting up as it rocketed down the runway were absolute highlights of an av geek's life. Plus that final departure ATC recording from JFK, practically brings tears to my eyes.

Just out of curiosity, would a Concorde ever encounter noticable turbulence during cruise at FL500 at Mach 2?

This was shot through the canopy, and it could be some imperfection of the glass that reduces the optical quality in that part.

There's light reflecting back up from the clouds below. Also, this was captured on film that has a larger dynamic range than most digital sensors, and we don't know what degree of post processing was involved.

The Concord was lovely even as a model. Not so with the current model.
