Lufthansa's Inaugural flight to SAN

Fri Mar 23, 2018 9:24 am

Lufthansa's inaugural flight to SAN started yesterday on Mar.22.Regular service starts on the 25th.
I didn't see a whole lot of A-netters there, but I was thinking that most people thought the inaugural was
on Mar,25.

I was there and there was a bit of a crowd at Laurel Street to watch her land. I took a couple of pix and a bit of video of the touchdown and the takeoff (at about 5:45pm) but I have no idea how to load that stuff here.

The weather cooperated beautifully (after all, this is San Diego!) and it was a beautiful sight to see the 343 come to Lindbergh for the first time.

I'd love to see some video from others who were there, and some pix and reports from anyone who was in the terminal for the ceremonies.

Welcome to San Diego, Lufthansa! (And congratulations to Hampton and the SDCRAA board for their efforts in making this happen!)

I'd like to see videos or pics. of the festivities such as the ribbon-cutting ceremony and the
water-cannon salute.

This flight is year-round, and it's mainline.

CL is leaving the long haul trade -- those North America routes are going/ returning to mainline.

With the arrival of Lufthansa, this brings the number of long haul carriers at SAN to four. I wonder who will join the lineup next? Korean or Philippine Airlines perhaps?

Are there any videos of it landing from the roof of the Aladdin or Laurel parking structure? I visited SAN with family last year and we got to the Laurel garage just in time for the BA 747 to arrive- it was a truly remarkable experience.

I found a few pictures of the ribbon-cutting ceremony on the SDIA page on Facebook.
It doesn't show if there was a water-cannon salute or not, there was a woman who looked
like it might have been Thella Bowen, and the woman who took her place after Bowen retired.
(I forgot her name.)

I have just heard that they did not do a water-cannon salute, in fact the airport
stopped doing water-cannon salutes because the airport's conserving water, so
instead, they did a "dry-cannon salute" which involved service vehicles flanking
the plane as it taxied to the gate.

I like the boat in the takeoff portion of the video.

Impressive! Perhaps a long haul LCC such as Cebu Pacific or Air Asia X can come next!

I'm rather shocked that KE isn't there now.

Or that JL, who's so traditionally conservative with all-new routes, beat them in.

Thanks so much to those who captured the beautiful videos, and to those who posted the links! I'll enjoy watching the landing over and over again for a long time.

This must be a mainline A343.
If it's not Boeing, I'm not going!

I think KE would be a good possibility now that they have 789's.

JAL to NRT is the fourth long-haul foreign flag in SAN at this point. (BTW, WK flies to ZRH whilst you can prolly surmise where BA flies!)

SAN's really developed a tidy variety of scheduled widebodies over the last few years:
77W/744, A332, A343s, 788, ABF, M10F, M11F.

Awesome!

You may have missed the qualifier there (*A = Star Alliance).

Anyway, British is obviously in One World, and Edelweiss is both seasonal/sporadic and also not a full Star Alliance partner, even though it is part of LH Group. You also can't easily purchase through connections on WK, and you can't earn MP miles in a lot of cases. Also, they don't codeshare with UA (at least on the SAN route) and I can't buy the tickets through UA (so I can redeem my miles). LH solves all of those things for me.
