What new runways are in work over 2,000m?

Sat Mar 24, 2018 11:49 pm

As an aviation enthusiast, growth will only happen with expanded capacity. What new runways are being built. For Simplicity sake I ignore proposed but not yet approved runways.

New Airports:
Navi Mumbai
New Beijing
New Istanbul
New Sydney

Added runways
Beijing Capital (4th)
Brisbane
Cape Town
Chicago ORD
Dublin
HYD
Moscow SVO
Shanghai PVG (or is this complete?)

What other new runways are in work?
I hear many proposals, but little action compared to a few years ago.

For example Delhi, Jakarta, and Ethiopia are supposed to have new airports built, but none seem to be far enough along to be certain they will be built.
If there isn't a published opening time frame, it isn't a serious project in my book. What projects did I miss?

I set the 2km minimum length as short runways do not enable much global travel.

In Mexico:

3 runways are being constructed for the new MEX airport, two 5 km long and one 4.5 km long. The first runway should be completed by year's end.

Proposed: 1 new runway for GDL of at least 3 km.

Singapore Changi Airport is extending a runaway that is previously used by the military from 2.75km to 4km. This runaway is to support a brand new terminal.

KORD has a massive new runway project in the works. Cargo and GA moved years ago to make way but the runway, right in the center of the airport complex, looks at least 1 year from completion.

Perth Airport is planning a 3rd runway, currently the 2 are 3/21 and 6/24. The planned runway will be a parallel one to 3/21, designated 3R/21L and will be 3000m long. For more info refer to

Kannur international airport in Kerala, India.

Also the Adampur air force base is being converted into a civil enclave, and some modifications to runway were correspondingly made. Its not an entirely new runway, however.

Then, we have Sindhudurg airport, Meerut airport and several other similar small airports, being constructed all around India.

Long tanh airport in Ho Chi Minh City should be starting construction soon.
The two runways at the new LAD airport
New XMN
New DLC
New TAO
New runway at NRT
New runway at BLR
New runway at HAK
a new airport at ULN is just being finished
ISB and DSS are newly commissioned runways
MUC is planning a new runway.
IKA is almost done with one
RVI just opened and there is another airport in Russia that will open soon.
Why is flying so expensive? And why is flying well so much more?

PVG it depend on which runway you are speaking of as the plan is to have 8 runway and they're gradually doing one after another. Fifth runway is reported as completed but is reserved for Comac.
As for new runway and/or new airport, off hand I can
think of:
3rd runway for HKG, 3rd runway for SZX, 4th and 5th runway for CAN
New Chengdu airport
SF Express hub airport
And actually they should be building or expanding 80+ airports in China in recent years, although not all of them get approved yet nor all of them involve runway but I think that is for most cases
When no other countries around the world is going to militarily stop China and its subordinate fom abusing its citizens within its national boundary, it is unreasonable to expect those abuse can be countered with purely peaceful means.

I thank everyone who provided information.
Let me be clear, I'm not documenting planned hypothetical runways that are only planned such as PER, MUC, or LHR. I found a disproportionate number of the listed runways still at planned.
If I couldn't find authorization of funding of a project with a timeline, I consider it one of many programs that might happen, but is not definitive and do not list it.
If I found no runway over 2km, I exclude the example.

New Airports:
Navi Mumbai
New Adampur
New Beijing
New Chengdu airport
New DLC airport
New Ho Chi Min
New Istanbul
New Kannur
New Mexico Cty
New Sindhudurg airport
New Sydney

Added runways

Although the construction of actual runways been completed, these airports are not fully finished yet:

ETM - New Eilat airport

LEY - Lelystad airport (extending the 1250m to 2700m and construction of a terminal for commercial aviation)

I suggest to add some info to new airports. Some of them are add on, some replacement
Most of them has no IATA/ICAO designation yet so full city names.
And as a rule only those where machines so tos ay start to dig into ground.
New airports
New Mumbai (A)
New Adampur (A)
New Beijing Daxing (A)
New Chengdu Tianfu (A)
New Dalian Jinzhou Bay (R)
New Qingdao Jiaodong (R)
New Xiamen - Dadeng Island (R)
New Ho Chi Min (A ?)
New Istanbul (R)
New Kannur (A)
New Mexico Cty (R)
New Sindhudurg airport (A?)
New Sydney /is this in progress already ?/ (A)

As to Added runways
Changsha (CSX) 2nd
Guyiang (KWE 2nd
Sanya (SYX) 2nd
Haikou (HAK) 2nd
Istanbul Sabiha Gokcen (SAW) 2nd
Tehran (IKA) 2nd

Remarks:
Beijing PEK 4th is bit mysterious, I doubt this will be realized in spite of new Daxing airport and capacity split
Shanghai PVG 5th is ready, I think is reserve till new Terminal 3 will be finished
Cape Town (CPT) 2nd approved start 2019

Jakarta's 3rd runway is slowly on the works, currently land clearing north of runway 25R/7L. Yogyakarta's new airport (43km SW from the current airport) is also on the works, currently land clearing as well. Kertajati's airport building and runway (190km SE of Jakarta) is almost finished.

Not sure about CPT's being a 2nd one...the way I understand it's Re-allignment, so a new runway yes, but the current one will not be used anymore and form part of the new taxiways.

New Luanda (LAD) Airport...suppose to open somewhere hopefully in the next year or two?

Everyone,
I'm ignoring planned. Unfunded concepts linger for decades. What 'm interested in is the next 15 years growth.

I shall add runways that are funded.

I appreciate links as when I try to find evidence, I find planned and planned doesn't belong on the list.

This is huge news! Links please. Is SUB getting another runway?

Guayaquil Ecuador (GYE) is expected to start (land prep) construction on replacement airport in the Daular area sometime in 2018. Expected to finish in 2022-2024 time frame. I am unsure if airport will open with just one or the full two new runways in the intial 16M pax plan. The main runway will be code F / Cat III and 4500m long at sea level. Other one is 3500m. Ultimate master plan has 3 parallel runways all far enough part for simultaneous departures and landings.

AKL has a new runway planned, to the north of the existing one, it’s approved, initially for a shorter length, now they want to build it full length from the start. Site works have already been done, you can see this on google earth. Completion is around 2025.

Some of the above comments are for work complete. For example, Tehran's 2nd runway. I'm keeping the list to future work.
I recommend celebrating completions in another thread.
For many projects I need links as too many seem to be just proposed.

New Airports:
Navi Mumbai
New Adampur
New Beijing
New Chengdu airport
New Dakar airport
New DLC airport
New Ho Chi Min (HUGE land area allocated).
New Islamabad
New Istanbul
New Kannur
New Kertajati Indonesia airport
New Mexico Cty
New Sindhudurg airport
New Sydney
New Yogyakarta Indonesia (3,250m runway!).

Added runways
Bangalore (2nd)
Beijing Capital (4th)
Brisbane
Cape Town
Chicago ORD
Dublin
Hong Kong
HYD
Istanbul (SAW 2nd runway)
Jakarta (3rd runway, IMHO the Most important single new runway of this group)
Moscow SVO
Narita NRT
Shenzhen 3rd runway.
Shanghai PVG (5th complete, not open open).
Singapore

article on Jakarta (I'm pleasantly surprised):
http://www.thejakartapost.com/news/2018 ... march.html

I would have liked to put the Guayaquil Ecuador new airport, but what I found stated 'proposed' (not yet funded).
Sorry to be a cynic, but I've been disappointed by too many proposed projects that went nowhere.

AKL is a great example of my cynicism. A runway 'approved' 16 years ago and then abandoned. There are not the required permissions in place to continue. If I recall correctly, construction was stopped due to noise concerns and until those concerns are addressed, there will be no operating 2nd runway.

Heck, AKL is back at the planning stages. My take is that they must start from scratch (whatever was done before must be undone and started all over again for construction projects do not sit a decade well.)

What do you classify as "planning stage"? They are in EIS now for it so it's more than just a paper idea. They have the layout of where it will be. That clarification may help.

Planning and layouts are cheap and usually not implimented. I'm looking for financial approval, a construction due date, Earth being moved.

If it is kicked back for environmental review, we know that can take decades. For example AKL had a 2nd runway under construction and then an added environmental review has halted work for a dozen years and the airport is starting again from scratch.

We live in an era where anti-growth organizations usually win. So I have become my cynical as to what will move forward.

For example, DEN, BLR, HYD, and MCO each have multiple additional planned runways. However, there is such a long review process that until the go ahead is given, I suspect it could be decades until work is done.

I limit to 2,000m and above as I cannot keep track of temporary runways. For example, friends used to have a runway on their ranch. 1000m IIRC. It cost too much to maintain, so they literally plowed it under and is back to cropland after stripping the asphalt for resale.

My employer and a prior employer own runways under 2000m that go in and out of service with each CEO change. So to prevent noise, I exclude short runways. A 2000m+ runway is an investment that will get used!

By my estimate, I can count 5 planned runways for everyone that will be built. I'm extra cynical on runways planned for 10+ years.

Regarding KEF: On the Master Plan, that means planing permission given, there are altogether 5 runways. The two now in use 10/28 and 1/19. The runway currently not in use, but to be rebuild 5/23. Than two new ones, a 14/32 and the second 1/19.

The rebuilding of the 2000m 5/23 (former 6/24, numbers are changing in the last year, 2/20 moved to 1/19) should have been already started on. It was the condition for closing the 06/24 at RKV, closed last year, that the 5/23 would become operational in KEF, for landing of smaller airplanes in bad weather. Important for medical emergency flights. I assume that they will start this year. It may well be that we will only see a 30 or 45 broad runway, not 60 m like the other two.

The new 14/32 should also make KEF safer in bad weather (heavy storms are mainly from southeast, over south, to southwest) and the second 1L/19R should cope with increased traffic, as the current 1/19 is much more used than the current 10/28.

Bangalore International airport's 2nd runway is under construction. Couple of links:

FX is expanding at IND. They announced a $1.5 billion IND expansion which will certainly include a runway.

Everyone,
I'm ignoring planned. Unfunded concepts linger for decades. What 'm interested in is the next 15 years growth.

I shall add runways that are funded.

I appreciate links as when I try to find evidence, I find planned and planned doesn't belong on the list.

This is huge news! Links please. Is SUB getting another runway?

Charlotte-Douglas is only at the planning stage. If you have a link showing the go ahead, please post it.

Lightsaber

That's fair. I'm fairly bull-ish on the expansion at CLT in general with the expansion of Concourse A set to open soon. With this additional runway running in parallel of existing, the noise impact will be minimal over today in terms of new areas impacts (today's pissed people will still be pissed). The goal today is for it to open in 2022-2023 which isn't too far off.

How about MLE? I believe the current one will become a taxiway or parking. Looks to be already partially paved when I saw it landing there last week.

I would have liked to put the Guayaquil Ecuador new airport, but what I found stated 'proposed' (not yet funded).
Sorry to be a cynic, but I've been disappointed by too many proposed projects that went nowhere.

DEN has six runways. Are demand and projected growth so great as to call for a seventh?
