IKIA (Imam Khomeini Airport) City Developments Thread

Tue Mar 27, 2018 10:07 am

ABOUT THIS PROJECT

https://naco.nl/portfolio_page/imam-khomeini-international-airport/ (video of project on website)

Located around 45km south of Tehran’s city centre in the Islamic Republic of Iran, Imam Khomeini International Airport handled 7.2 million passengers and around 64,000 tons of cargo in 2015.

With a second terminal currently under construction and a second runway on the horizon, Imam Khomeini Airport City Company (IKAC) has the ambition for the airport to become a major hub in the region and to develop the first airport city in the country.

Image

In order to achieve this target, IKAC needs to significantly develop and expand Imam Khomeini International Airport and the surrounding 13,700 hectares around the airport. As such, the company appointed NACO and our local partner consortium 3T as Master Consultant to provide specialised services and assist in the planning, development and implementation of Imam Khomeini Airport City.

We started work in December 2015 with the review and refinement of the existing airport and airport city master plans. In parallel, we initiated the development of the new Iranshahr Terminal 2, began various studies to work towards optimising and refurbishing the existing terminal, and also provided assistance to complete the new Salam Terminal and the second runway.

Image

Considering the size of the area to be developed, the main challenge we faced in this project was to ensure effective integration between the airport city and the ongoing development at the airport itself. Defining the first phase of the airport city whilst ensuring a flexible and easily phasable development plan was our key focus. We ensured that all of the different elements of our work were explicitly included in all development proposals, whilst keeping the short term and long term development objectives in mind.

Image

Based on the refined master plan, new development projects will be defined and implemented over the coming years, and include the first phase development of the new airport city. Throughout the project we will continue providing a range of services, including master planning, bidding and contracting services, engineering services and technical support, as well as project management.

Looks pretty nice, but they'll have to get past the sanctions to gather enough pax. I'd wait for 2021 to begin this... ;)

There are no aviation related sanctions on Iran Air and construction has already started.

The US policy on denying VWP access to non-nationals who've visited Iran, however, does seriously discourage those people who would like to visit or transit through Iran at some point but also not have to seek a full US visa even as a tourist for an indeterminate time thereafter...

By the way - you can use the IATA airport designator "IKA" for Imam Khomeini Airport as it's distinct to "THR" for Mehrabad.

I can't speak for the rest of the world but in Europe no one really cares that the US insists on keeping the ineffective sanctions against Iran. Trade is booming and so are tourist numbers.

I for one an happy that they are going ahead with this project. I also hope Iranian carriers keep on adding more modern aircraft. IranAir can easily recreate what TK did in Istanbul. Naturally they will require at least a decade of stable growth.

By the way, isn't Airbus (or another European company) advising the Iranians on how to expand airport infrastructure?

With a name like IKIA there are just too many great options for jokes!

Yeah but we all know Trump is just looking for a reason to bring them back.

What's going to happen to THR with this new airport so close to Tehran? Will THR close or will both airports continue to operate?

The new terminal must be going up quickly. On Wikimapia I can't even locate the construction site.

Looks like an ambitious project.

For some reason I always enjoy news and threads about new or expanding airports (and BER too FUBARs too!). Very detailed info!

I do have one question about this; 45 km from city center sounds like a lot. How easy is it to get to the airport? Doesn't look like it has a train connection.

From memory there is a train or metro in the works, but it is also well connected by taxis and the prices are reasonable.

A metro line has been planned for some time, but wasn't operational in 2016. The taxi fare from Mehrabad to IKA was something between 10 and 20 € at that time.

I just hope that they do away with blocking access to the airside until a certain time before your flight. It's just horrible to sit in no man's land between check-in and security for hours...

The metro line has been in operation since August 2017 - below are some pictures of last year, when it was in its last construction phase.

Will the use of Salam Terminal be limited to Iranian airlines? If so I won’t be able to use it because of the lack of Iran Air flights from North America.

The more foreign airlines cancel their services to Iran, the more competitive for Iranian airlines.

Is FZ reducing flights because there is no demand or because of the recent code-share with Emirates?

EY is suspending IKA because of their own internal issues. I am sure there are other airlines out there that have added flights and seats to Tehran.

What makes you sure? - The economic situation is extremely difficult. Things will get worse when President Trump will announce his approach towards the nuclear deal in 14 minutes...

Trump might announce whatever he wants but the rest of the world (at leas Europe) will not follow. Anyway, I doubt Trump is that stupid to withdraw from the Iranian deal.

The reason why so many airlines are reducing/suspending flights to Tehran is also because there were just too many of them launching flights at the same time.
