Germania + EL AL clipped tails at Ben Gurion

Wed Mar 28, 2018 7:12 am

This morning a Germania 737-700 pushing back from terminal 3 took serious damage when it hits the rh stabilizer of a parked 767-300 of EL AL. According to images the 737s tail nearly was cut through before coming to a stop. No passengers or crew was injured on both aircraft.

This "was" (yes i am going in the airliners tradition for a write-off) on of Germania's newest 737-700 and I assume was one of the last to be planned for the phaseout in 2019.

I actually wonder with the phaseout of their 10 737 with what are they replace in the short term as the 320 will only be delivered in 2020, seems to be a long and big gap?

Since Air Berlin´s insolvency I have taken a close look at Germania to see what their plans are. They seem to getting their hands on a lot of second hand A319s and A321s (no A320s though).

A good overview of their fleet can be found here:

It will forever be a McDonnell Douglas MD 80 , Boeing MD 80 sounds so wrong

Thanks, I know, I was referering to the second hand additions of older generation aircraft. They have A319s and A321s CEO but no A320s. The NEO order is for A320s not sure if they have options to switch to other variants.

Okay, I'll do you the favour... WILL THIS BE A WRITE OFF?

Or are we talking about a more politically uncorrect question you are waiting for?

I thought about this aspect but refrained from any comment. Well, it was a German aircraft that hit the Israeli aircraft but most probably driven by an Israeli tractor driver...

This will be a costly repair for the Germania a/c, if no a write-off. The whole tail fin looks done to me.

Aircraft is D-ABLB, a 9.7 year old former AB bird.

Sorry, I had to disqualify you because you did not follow the well-known a.net procedure by asking "is it a write-off?"
Anyhow, consolation prize: ;-)

So seriously will this be a write-off considering that Germania wanted to phaseout this plane end of 2019? might be worth more in parts or not?

Looks like the hull was spared impact so cabin pressure shouldn't be a problem hopefully. still gonna be a while in the shop thou.

Depends on the insurer and owner. There are plenty of spare tails to swap in. Check out SOAR'c video of them swapping a MD-80 vertical stab fairly recently. If a financial case can be made for that, then this bird will probably fly again. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j0fJ4lt1yEo

The NG has a taller tail than the Classic.

That reminds me of a Germania B737-300 at Monastir MIR/DTMB like thirty years ago, maybe 1988 or 1989 where severe damage happened to the stabilizer sometime during the approach for unknown reason. Aircraft remained grounded a few days until new components became available and have been installed at the airport tarmac. I find no report on this on the German (NTSB) website and unfortunately had no idea to take a picture at that time.
