Just how many customers are av. geeks? And imho the new crane works great on the app, it works great on the webpage and the use of the yellow is very clever and even customer friendly. In the end LH could probably go back to the old livery, keep the new one or paint the planes all white, it would hardly matter.

Taste is a personal thing, I agree.

Having said that, I would reserve the word "hideous" to apply to the aggressively infantile nonsense that is the current AA colour scheme.

For me the LH's new colour scheme does not inspire "the pride in teutonic competence", but "mild disinterest".

Sometimes it takes time to get used to a new livery/scheme, specially after so many years with Lufthansa's distinctive colors. I remember in 1992, I hated the United gray livery so much I actually spoke about this to the guy at the hobby shop I used to buy my Schabak airplanes at. In conclusion, eventually I got to like that livery and hated to see it go too! So , maybe in time we will all get used to the new Lufthansa livery...

While it is certainly modern, it is no doubt also less expensive to maintain. Airlines are cutting costs everywhere they can.

Why? There is more paint in it...

My thoughts towards the revised LH livery are mixed. The lack of colour (yellow) disappointing otherwise the livery is clean. Trust me it’s taken up until now to accept this livery as it rolls out on all fleet types. The test will be the A380.

Lufthansa's new livery is just hideous, period, no matter what aircraft it's on. This should go down as a classic case study on how to ruin a corporate image.

seahawk wrote:

If no one cares, then why change it? It costs millions to repaint an entire fleet. Do you really think LH or any other airline would do that if no one cared?

This new livery (if you can even call it that) just plays up the ugly and small tail fin of the A350.

I dislike the nose too .. but that tail just looks far too small for the size of the rest of the plane.

New planes (787) included are just not attractive, in my opinion.

Not Lufthansa, not Iberia, not Japan Airlines, not China Eastern...

Who does care... ? Icelandair, Loganair, Emirates, Etihad, Qatar, Brussels, Eurowings, plenty more. And whilst I realise I am talking about 'special liveries' in some of these examples (not retro themes though) at least there are still some airlines willing to be bold when it comes to the use of colour, shape and design.

I jumped in my car to go and get this shot less than two hours ago, and this has been around for a few years now. I'm unlikely to do that when Lufthansa's Munich or Frankfurt flights arrive later on...

Theres nothing to get used to, though. Its just another all-white fuselage with a painted tail .. and very little else.

I think the tail section is more modern and fresh than the old livery - but it's still a huge missed opportunity and not flattering to the 350 (or any plane really) at all.

They could still have kept it relatively cheap by just adding some nice vector line graphics waving from the nose or the Lufthansa text, up and around / back towards the rear- fanning out or blending into the black portion of the tail.

You forgot Air China. Whenever I am in PEK I am suprised how many CA-aircraft wear a special livery (777s, A330 and several 737s)

Looks horrible. A shame they got rid of a livery that was timeless and didn't need to be changed. If you're going to change such an iconic livery, I'd at least have put more effort. I mean, do people not see how much of this airplane is nothing but white? How does that deserve any credit at all? Standards have fallen...

Well, that's not how it works in Germany but I am sure someone had some sleepless nights after getting some critical questions from LH's management...

If this is true, I hope they could upgrade to some other livery. I like the old one, even if it was a bit boring. Could they just upgrade the paint for the a350, not the 747-8? I like it on that bird.

It's rather ironic that the European ULCCs are the ones who actually spend money on their livery vs. the bland/cheap Eurowhite that's hit, save for the likes of KL, the Euro legacies. Compare:

Air France
Swiss
Iberia
Finnair
and now LH
etc.

vs.

Ryanair
Easyjet
Norwegian
Wizz, etc.

Aircraft types aside, what would you rather spot?

It's rather ironic eh!

It does seem to work better on the 748 than on the 350 but it still doesn't thrill me. Put me down as disappointed.

One does not simply transit through Mordor Int'l.. :P

Seriously, though. The thumbnail made it look like a cargo plane. My toungue-in-cheek theory is that they promoted someone from LH Cargo to run branding at LH mainline.

I strongly vote against the word "hideous" here.
LHs new livery maybe a bit bland, but its also very elegant, and very professional looking. I think D-AIXI is a pretty aircraft lacking a bit of colour (yellow;-).

Hideous, that is China Eastern´s livery. Utterly Bland, cheap AND ugly.
JAL isnt much better, its bland and it looks unfinished.

Not only that!!! They also reduced the number of paints to keep in stock in maintenance shop by a whooping 50%: only two paints needed now instead of four previously.

Can you even imagine the TREMENDOUS savings that can be made from that??? I'm SOOO excited!!! :cloudnine:

AY livery is minimalistic but classy. The billboard letters occupy well the space and avoid to their airplanes look "naked". Also, the font is very well chosen, it gives the whole airplane a fresh and clean feeling. It actually represents Finland very well: minimalistic, fresh and clean, with a lot of tact and taste.

JL, while being a fantastic airline to fly on, does not have a livery.

LH's new livery represents the new LH very well too: an uninspiring, cheapo airline who doesn't give a damn.

That doesn't look nearly as Eurowhite. That A350 is blindingly white. Gonna start calling it the albino livery.

AANSWER: because there's equity in branding.

Apparently not enough for many airlines to want to keep particularly colorful fleet-wide liveries, but enough to keep an identity nonetheless.

Lufthansa is a well established household name. They can afford to maintain an understated, classy presence. They don't need to paint their airplanes bright yellow for everybody to remember their brand. I think the redesign is elegant and calming. I think some yellow in the crane would have been nice, but I love the wraparound and the simplification. It still looks like Lufthansa. It appeals to the kind of people who fly LH. It isn't a school bus.

I think the majority of people here complain because they like to complain, they are scared of change, and they don't understand why companies do the things they do. People complain about SIA's livery and that they don't need a retro livery because it is so old. I guarantee you the day they change it, hundreds of sycophantic, bitter pricks will come in complaining that they changed it. What do you want from Lufthansa? More cheatlines?

This is an aviation forum, where people enjoy the aesthetics of commercial aircraft - many of us are more interested, as spotters, in having airports full of interesting planes with interesting liveries. Obviously, that isn't how business is done, but surely you can understand why people voice an upset opinion when airlines with classic liveries change to something generic and plain. Maybe you don't see it, because you like it, but let the people of A.net voice their opinion.

Hahaha!! Sauron would follow Lufthansa's lead and just have a white evil eye logo on the tail, not a red one, because red would add color. :+P

This livery is less hideous than terribly boring. The blue is way too dark, more or less black, Euro-white liveries are the bane of the skies and aprons. Time to bring back bright, splashy colors like the 70's and 80's. Which, as noted above, ULCC's and LCC's seem to be doing. Southwest, for example, love all of their liveries from 1971 to today!

But it isn't LH's job to appeal to avgeeks, it's to appeal to customers. I don't think a tenth of the people here bitching understand that this was a good decision for Lufthansa. I think it's elegant. What constitutes interesting? Stuff like Wulana dreaming is beautiful, but in the end, special liveries are special, and they should be that way. Companies like Delta, Lufthansa, and SQ don't drive interest from special liveries, they derive business from elegance and perfection.

I'd also just add that liveries inevitably look better on some aircraft types than they do on others. As you've already outlined, the new livery suits the Lufthansa brand perfectly, and having seen it in person, it really does look elegant, understated and reliable.

You think this is bad, imagine landing at MUC or FRA once the entire fleet is repainted.

It'd be like landing at MEM today but in a black-and-white movie. Seriously, the new LH livery just looks like someone walked into a graphic design firm with a photo of a FedEx 767 and said "like this, but more boring. Make sure that anyone who sees it immediately finds something else to watch, like grass growing."

I'm in the minority here, but I've loved the new LH livery from the very beginning. Yes it does hark back to some older liveries, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. It's simple and elegant, and most importantly, they've maintained their brand identity by leaving the crane on the tail. As others have noted, liveries don't always suit every single aircraft in an airline's fleet. Like all things in life, they are a compromise.

Just think, they could've gone down the IB route and destroyed their brand identity.

Looks terrible, far too plain. The white engine, small titles, white fuselage make it look like an ad-hoc leased plane in minimal livery. Disappointing

Iberia, my god, yes, that was an awful redesign. Iberian style and uniqueness replaced by utterly boring nondescript colour patches.

The A350 look comical with this livery on.

The photo doesn’t do it justice. On the tarmac in Toulouse it looks pretty good!

Seriously, though. The thumbnail made it look like a cargo plane. My toungue-in-cheek theory is that they promoted someone from LH Cargo to run branding at LH mainline.

My thoughts exactly! I was beginning to wonder if Airbus had developed an A359 cargo version on the sly!! :D

What a disaster. I'm the biggest LH fanboy around but I think they've managed to make an A350 look cheap and rather hideous (no easy task).

Its not the best one out there. But imagine if SQ went Euro white, the Anet would got into meltdown

Singapore Airlines is a textbox example of how to keep a timeless livery modern and fresh. The same basic livery has been around since the 70s but thre has been several refreshes/moderniseations throughout that period. Each one is subtle enough that very few people would notice them yet if you parked an SQ 707 next to an SQ A350, the difference would certainly be obvious. If only Lufthansa had taken a similar approach.

If SQ impulsively decided to paint all their planes eurowhite, it would be an obvious sign of mismanagement since the current brand (and, more importantly the reputation for quality that it is synonymous with) is the product of decades and decades of careful refinement.

Since this is turning into a poll of sorts....

I'll go ahead and sign myself up for the 'ugly' camp.
Well, maybe not so much ugly but extremely bland, drab and unimaginative. It has to be one of the most boring and depressing liveries I have seen recently, and there have a been quite a few unimpressive rebrandings lately.
Iberia comes to mind, with a very similar layout, but at least IB has eye catching colors to it. This is just dull and lifeless.
I'll do my own airline. With Blackjack. And hookers. In fact, forget the airline.
