Southwest Teases "A Whole new way to get away."

Sat Mar 31, 2018 4:16 pm

Southwest posted a video on Facebook this morning with the words "A whole new way to get away." and the caption "Coming soon...".

Their social media employee has shot down people guessing it was Hawaii (saying "That sounds pretty sweet to us, Jessica. Not sure if that's where THIS message is headed, but we like the way you think. -Adam" and "You seem pretty sure of yourself. Sure you don't want another guess? -Adam") as well as Iceland and teleportation, instead joking that it was about a new flavor of peanuts ("Have y'all been waiting for news about a new flavor of peanut? Because we're pretty excited over here. -Adam")

Anyone have thoughts?

Maybe selling last minute vacation bundles on an app, bundling unsold seats and hotel for last minute getaways. Like you get an alert “we have $349 2 day bundles to Vegas leaving tonight. 2 nights at Caesar’s Palace included based on spinel occupancy!” It would be a great way to monetize unsold seats while not cheapening the regular fare seats, and gaining ancillary revenue from hotel, car, and attraction sales.

One possibility is WN announcing HOU-PUJ nonstop service since HOU is one of the main international gateways for WN. WN also already has nonstop service to PUJ from ATL, BWI, MDW, and FLL. I am surprised that WN doesn't already serve PUJ from HOU, but I do expect WN to be announcing plans to serve PUJ nonstop from HOU in the near future.

Another possibility is WN announcing the initial nonstop routes to Hawaii.

In addition to Hawaii and possibly adding HOU-PUJ nonstop service, WN adding service to additional Caribbean destinations not currently served by WN is another possibility.

Wouldn’t be surprised to see them adding a basic economy fare getting rid of the free bags aspect and and adding change fees. They really aren’t “low fare” anymore and probably need to introduce something similar to compete with F9/G4/NK.

I doubt it. It doesn't need to compete at F9/G4/NK's level. That wouldn't be a "whole new way".

I don't think they'd do that with a big, flashy, happy looking announcement.

There have been hints of a new website such as the page for changing flights being redesigned. That's my guess.

What, no 321s?

Seriously, though, a new fare class may not be too far off the mark. “Wanna Get Away” ——> “A whole new way to get away”.

I do like the guess about last minute vacations but not sure if that’s super unique. Maybe auctioning off last minute inventory?

Ugh. You’re probably right.

Thanks, also, for the reminder to stay off the internet tomorrow. It’s the one day a year where people think that by opening their mouth they’re suddenly the funniest thing ever heard.

If it weren't so contrary to their business model, I'd wonder if they were introducing some sort of Premium Economy or even First Class hard product. But again, that would be such a massive change for them that I can't imagine that's the right answer. Tomorrow is April 1st, so we'll see if this tease is real or not soon enough.

GK already addressed that topic that Southwest will never do a basic economy fare BAG FLY FREE AS LONG AS I'M CEO!

They'd be more likely to have a dedicated Y+ or F cabin before they do that.

Blasphemous. WN's "Wanna Get Away" fare is, for all intents and purposes, a 'basic economy' fare, and eliminating two of the unique elements which makes WN very popular among business and leisure travelers (depending on the markets) would be an unmitigated public relations disaster which would make the various UA fiascos seem tame by comparison.

They really aren’t “low fare” anymore and probably need to introduce something similar to compete with F9/G4/NK.

Maybe in certain markets, they might have F9/G4/NK nipping on their heels, but WN competing against G4 or F9 is bordering on laughable. NK in some markets, maybe, but WN still has a stronger market share compared to NK in the majority of markets where they compete.

"Wanna get away" has been part of the Southwest marketing suite for many many years. It's also the name of one of their fare classes.

A couple of corporate marketing April fools jokes to remember include the left handed Whopper at Burger King and Taco Bell purchasing the Liberty Bell. Maybe Southwest takes a try at making this part of history as well....

The website is already different than it was two weeks ago. The page you get after inputting departure./ arrival city and travel date has a very different look tan it had just a few weeks ago.

My guess: April Fools prank

Well there is NO hint of any ""A whole new way to get away." information on Southwest's website at the moment.Maybe it was just an April's Fools Day prank to get people to look at the website.

Stupid. Annoying. Low-budget. And basically the same idea as this year's WestJet April Fool's thingy, which is far, far better. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fLfziLRFH1c

This, of course, was my favorite: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M4SkoJy3D0M&t=3s
