JFK, landings from three different directions?!

Sat Mar 31, 2018 9:51 pm

Hi everyone!

Earlier today I landed on BA173 from LHR at JFK. We approached over Long Island and landed on 31L.

I was seated a window on the right side and thus could see that one plane was just about to vacate one of the 22 runways, while another one was about to touchdown on the same runway a moment later. So this are already two runways crossing each other.

Then we taxied over to T7 and I could watch airplanes coming in to land on 13L at a constant stream.

So we had airplanes landing at 31L, 13L and 22L or R at the same time.

Is this normal? And is it safe?

22L does not intersect either 31L or 31R

I believe 13L arrivals usually follow the Carnarsie Visual approach.

What you experienced was a runway change which occurs multiple times throughout the day. Your flight was most likely the last to land 31L and the airport was switching to a 13s overflow 22L operation

Yes it changed around 2pm today.

Kennedy needs two runways for landings and 1 for departures from midday thru the early evening when they reverse it.

Vor 13L Vor 22L depart 13L

Around 5 (wind permitting) it switches to ILS22L Depart 22R and 31L at KE intersection

Wasn't at JFK today but I have seen them change runway configurations in the past and it is quite impressive how they do it without skipping a beat and make it where you don't skip a beat. That could be what you saw. 31L is actually unusual for BA to land on. They'll usually go 31R.

I know EWR went from 4s to 22s (complete reversal) today at around 10:45AM. Winds began out of the NW today then became SW to S.

31L was probably done so that a switch to 13L/22L could be done faster as there may already have been a plane approaching 13L (sometimes, aircraft are approaching 31R and go around and end up landing the opposite way, 13L). A rare configuration is landings on 13R (visual) and 4R (ILS) with departures on 13L.

JFK doesn’t use Lahso. As others have stated, they much have been switching from a 31 operation to a 13L, 22L/R operation.

I must say one of my most interesting landings was on a Delta 767 approaching JFK. The plan continue to make hard bank to the left before we landed. I remember flying over a lot of buildings while turning left. It was a fun landing.

I actually love landing on 13L - I've only done it on smaller aircraft however. I think it would be awesome on a larger aircraft. Especially if it takes the late turns. Feels like NYC Kai Tak!
