FAQ

WHAT IS THIS REPORT?
This compares departures for sale THIS WEEK for the stated period versus what was for sale LAST WEEK...It does NOT compare to last year or now (UNLESS OTHERWISE STATED).

THE SCHEDULES SHOWN HERE CHANGE AFTER YOU POST???
-To improve is to change; to be perfect is to change often---Winston Churchill. This is data the carriers filed at the point in time it was captured. It's changed since then. You are just going to have to live with it.

HOW DO I READ IT?
XXX-YYY DEC 4>5 JAN 4>5 ; means that the listed airline changed the frequency between the two airports to add from 4 to 5 roundtrips in December and January. No other months were changed. I only list one direction, although it is possible the listed change is only one way. It is too difficult to average the two directions. I assume the change is roundtrip and that is most often the case.

WHERE ARE SEATS SHOWN?
They aren't. This only shows departures.

HOW ARE THE DAILY DEPARTURES CALCULATED?
This report uses total operations for the month listed, divided over the days in the month.

WHAT ARE THE FRACTIONAL FLIGHTS?
Flights that do not operate every day of the month create fractional service. In most cases flights are rounded, but in the case of international service or markets with low frequency, fractions are shown. For example, if a flight operates 4 times in April it will show 4/30=0.133=0.1. Also , a flight that only operates once per week may vary between 0.1 and 0.2 because a weekday may repeat either 4 or 5 times depending on the month.

WHAT ABOUT CARRIERS THAT DON'T PUBLISH A SCHEDULE 9 MONTHS IN ADVANCE?
Most airlines publish schedules 11 months in advance. This report covers the next 9 months. That avoids seeing schedules as they are loaded. Several LCCs load their schedules less than 9 months into the future. I remove the schedule adds if I see them and show a year over year (YOY) comparison if I notice them.

THOSE FLIGHTS AREN'T DELTA, THEY ARE SKYWEST
This report only shows the marketing code. It is too complicated to show all the operators.

THE FREQUENCIES MAY HAVE CHANGED AS YOU SHOW, BUT THE SEATS DIDNT CHANGE BECAUSE OF EQUIPMENT SWAPS
That is a natural weakness of a frequency based report, but it provides something to discuss below.

THIS LOOKS LIKE AN ERROR?
The carriers file the schedules. They do make mistakes. Most of the mistakes I have seen are either related to code shares not being marked as "duplicates" or carriers filing flights with invalid data such as equipment codes that are not standard. This causes flights to not appear.

CHARTERS?
Lately charters have been showing up in the database. I have no idea if that will continue.

I marked some of the ones I thought were interesting with an "*".

I'm hoping by this point, this flight is an E-175. The STS airport authority keeps saying that the E-175s will replace the Q400's on some flights this summer.

A lot of significant UA increases to smaller markets. I am not convinced that US can measurably increase their profitability by doubling service to some of these smaller markets.

A little surprised United held on for 7 months after Southwest started CLE-MKE. I believe United announced the end of CLE-STL just on the basis of Southwest announcing it would move into the market. Hopefully United leaving will help Southwest do better because the first couple of months have been weak.

Almost all of the big ones are reversals from "cuts" last week.

That was my thought too!!!

Happy Easter everyone posting from a full B6 flight 25 BOS-BGI. Caribbean is good for BOS and B6 with another BOS-PAP increase though the recent increases on DR flights got pulled back.
Airlines flown: A3, AA, AC, AF, AM, BA, B6, CA, CO, CX, DL, EA, EL, IB, LH, MI, MQ, NH, NW, NZ, OU, PE, QF, S4, SQ, TP, UA, US, VS, WE, WN

2019: CX BOS-HKG, WE HKG-HKT, CA HKT-PEK-EWR, B6 EWR-BOS

HA OGG-SAN MAY 1.0>0.5

Hmmm. Gonna have to look into this -- does it translate to the flight still starting on May 1 but only op'ing 3-4 days per week or does it mean the flight will now be starting in mid-May instead on the 1st? Either way, it's disappointing but I know there are 321 issues with HA this summer so we'll see how this all settles out.

*AS BOI-LWS SEP 1.0>0 OCT 1.0>0 NOV 0.9>0 DEC 1.0>0
AS SAN-SJC SEP 3>4 OCT 3>4
*AS SEA-LWS SEP 1.8>0 OCT 1.9>0 NOV 1.9>0 DEC 1.8>0

There is a thread about AS dropping service at LWS; SEA-LWS pax will be able to use remaining service between SEA and PUW, an airport not far from Lewiston.

The extension of the 4th SAN-SJC beyond summer confirms to me that chances are the added flight is permanent, and not just a seasonal add. Not a surprise but pleasing just the same.

Thanks, as always, enilria.

CLE-MKE is a route that ought to benefit from WN’s thru flight scheduling to add some bulk, and they have run BNA-CLE-MKE or the reverse in several schedules to compliment another new-ish route. It’s too thin for 143-seat airplanes standing alone but that is true of plenty of routes. The difference, of course, is that MKE only has limited connections these days and one of the most obvious (MSP) no longer operates.

On a separate note, the BNA-TUP “add” looks like an extension of existing service. That’s an interesting route. It’s thin but is one of the few ~200 mile drives left in the region that is a real pain.

Ouch? Maybe for the last vestiges of the old CLE UA hub, sure. Yet even with UA's departure, CLE-MKE still has more seats on this route then when United solely operated it just one year ago. This cut isn't that painful unless you are a UA FF.

This doesn't surprise me at all. Having two airlines at OAK battling it out for LGW seems way too much for OAK. And it appears to reflect that in their off-season cancellation. It kind of makes me wonder how DI is doing on the route.

Enilria...I really do appreciate these OAG updates. Thank you. I may not say this all the time.

A lot of significant UA increases to smaller markets. I am not convinced that US can measurably increase their profitability by doubling service to some of these smaller markets.

Why do you say that? Smaller markets have less competition, and thus are able to command higher fares. People in those smaller cities will also be more willing to pay a higher price to avoid a long drive to a larger airport.

It's not a huge volume of premium traffic, but it's probably more profitable traffic than some of the seats sold in the large bloodbath markets.

A good example, UA had some very cheap DEN-LAX fares last year. I bought 2 one way tickets last year for a cruise and they were around $35 each. They may sell thousands of seats at a lower price in a huge market and make very little on them, compared to a DEN-MSO fare which they may sell for $275. They might not sell a ton of those tickets, but the ones they do sell are likely very profitable.

WN survived this round over UA, but w/o competition, will WN keep it as 2x daily or trim it to 1x daily?

Pretty sure this route is seasonal. No idea why they'd keep running it in August and then drop it for the Fall.

Interesting add. One of the reasons I moved from AA to DL a couple of years ago was AA's anemic destinations and frequencies from NYC to the places I need to travel to. Will be curious to see if this is a continuation of the JFK slot dartboard AA has been throwing lately or something that sticks.

DI is going daily on OAK-LGW this year so they may doing fine. Probably toasting an apparent victory on this route today.

I am unsure if WN will drop MKE-CLE down to 1x daily, and WN might keep it at 2x daily since the only WN stations between CLE and MKE that have nonstop service to MKE on WN are too far south for connections between MKE and CLE.

BOS, CUN, FLL, RSW, LGA, MCO, and DCA are the only non-UA hub destinations that will still be served nonstop from CLE on UA after the discontinuation of UA CLE-MKE nonstop service. However, LGA is located in the same market as UA's EWR hub, and DCA is located in the same market as UA's IAD hub.

If UA is planning on discontinuing CLE-LGA nonstop service, WN could acquire slots from UA to add nonstop service to LGA from CLE and CMH. WN could also increase MCI-LGA nonstop service to 2 daily nonstops from 1 daily nonstop if WN could get extra slots at LGA.

If UA is planning on discontinuing CLE-DCA nonstop service, WN could possibly acquire slots from UA to add nonstop service to DCA from CLE and other WN destinations within the DCA perimeter. However, WN does already serve BWI nonstop from CLE, and BWI is also closer to CLE than NYC is.

It’s really unreal as I just booked 1-4 seats for the inaugural. ;)

As for MKE-CLE, I wonder whether WN are surprised UA waited this long to pull the plug or maybe a big corporate contract is now up and jumped ship to WN? Either way a fully expected win for WN.

A lot of people are touting the use of the A321 NEO to Hawaii, but isn't that a big decrease in the number of seats going from a 763 or A330?

Sure, but of course we haven't had any OGG service from SAN for years so any a/c is fine with me! I'm just disappointed that once again, SAN-OGG gets trimmed due to a/c issues. But at least HA seems to be working at trying to finally get the route up and operating. I hope there will be no further changes on the route.

Thanks Rushmore' for the explanation. (I was hoping that was the correct one!)

We'll see how summer goes but it may need to be reduced to 1x daily in the winter. UA hung on for a long time post-hub so there might have been some sort of corporate contract involved. Maybe WN can pick it up and keep the frequencies. We shall see.

I just don't understand the "ouch" comment when the route has more seats currently than it had in the past. It's nonsense,

Not surprised about DFW-UIO. That one seemed an oddball given that its a small local market and doesn't generate a lot of connections from Asia.

I don't understand why you are taking such offense to a simple comment. Seats aren't everything, what's important for most travelers is frequencies. (Part of the reason this thread is about frequencies and not seats) CLE has taken some hits recently in terms of domestic service, so obviously you don't want to see an established carrier drop a route there.

Meh. Both carriers were never going to coexist on this route long term. I think CLE is better off with WN over UA, so in the end this is a win if it lets WN stick around of the route.

What? You don't enjoy the long drive on the Natchez Trace Parkway with its rigorously enforced 50 MPH speed limit (I know from experience), lack of services, and lengthy stretches of oft-unchanging scenery?

Happy Easter everyone posting from a full B6 flight 25 BOS-BGI. Caribbean is good for BOS and B6 with another BOS-PAP increase though the recent increases on DR flights got pulled back.

Of course cabotage would prevent it from being very likely! :)

A little surprised United held on for 7 months after Southwest started CLE-MKE. I believe United announced the end of CLE-STL just on the basis of Southwest announcing it would move into the market. Hopefully United leaving will help Southwest do better because the first couple of months have been weak.

I'd guess that those are just seasonal adjustments. Just my humble opinion, of course. But even so, what carrier has the most flights and seats from the mainland U.S. to Hawaii?

Yes, but A321NEO will allow for higher LF and fare numbers and also daily service. And in markets that can sustain widebody with good RASM, having multiple daily A321NEO will allow for better scheduling. There are at least 11 routes that was made possibly for AS due to the usage 737, which would be uneconomical for wide bodies. A321NEO may still be too much capacity for some of those routes, but I would imagine on larger markets like SAN-OGG would be the perfect aircraft. It certainly offers far better economic than A330 or 737. HA has generally been able to get a non-trivial fare premium in most of the markets it's in, so it was always just a matter of finding the right aircraft to operate them. And A321NEO is it once the engine issues gets resolved.

Looks like the UA Hawaii build up (other than DEN-HI) didn’t even last a year.

Not surprised when AS and HA offer a much better experience.

UA gets a fare premium out of its fortress hubs to HI (even over HA). If they can't get DEN-HI to work, it simply means the market does not allow for it.

Maybe from a miles earning perspective or something? UA's product on this route wasn't anything special; just a couple of ExpressJet E145 flights, which probably wasn't enough to keep the route viable.

Pretty sure this route is seasonal. No idea why they'd keep running it in August and then drop it for the Fall.

August is still summer vacation season, and despite the heat in August, a lot of people fly to Florida then so the kids can spend time with grandma and grandpa before school starts.

Interesting point I can see where you are coming from, in that WN is more likely to keep the route than UA. But wouldn't most business travelers prefer UA over WN?
Not being a business traveler, I can't say for sure. But I would guess it isn't that big of a deal anymore not that the hub is gone. I don't think UA is exactly Cleveland's favorite son. Plus, as someone mentioned below, it was two E145's. WN's products compares quite favorably to that.
As we celebrate mediocrity, all the boys upstairs want to see, how much you'll pay for what you used to get for free.

B6, JFK ORD cut answers the question on how they were going to run that many flights out of 1 ORD gate.

Another BOS add at the expense of JFK. Similar to DEN PHX HOU SEA and, more recently, SYR.

B6 doesnt really add capacity to these places...they shift it from JFK to BOS

I think that really depends on how large WN gets at CLE. If WN gets large enough that it serves a significant number of important business destinations nonstop, I don't know that that's true. Certainly many business passengers at BNA fly WN and some even fly WN when there is nonstop competition. But at WN's current size at CLE, I don't foresee much preference for WN aside from whatever subset of passengers happen to see WN's network as an advantage. That group might include whatever passengers work/fly for the business with the Milwaukee connection (I don't know who that is).

Apparently B6 will move from L to G sometime soon. Was talked about as early as April but now being pushed farther to June. I heard that B6 asked for an additional gate on G but when the city asked to see what the schedule would be it wasn’t enough of an increase to justify running 2 gates. The city said when they are ready to pad the schedule more than they can ask for another gate.

Pretty large business connection between CLE and MKE. Eaton (several major facilities in Milwaukee suburbs), Rockwell Automation, Johnson Controls, and General Electric just to name a few.

HA OGG-SAN MAY 1.0>0.5

Hmmm. Gonna have to look into this -- does it translate to the flight still starting on May 1 but only op'ing 3-4 days per week or does it mean the flight will now be starting in mid-May instead on the 1st? Either way, it's disappointing but I know there are 321 issues with HA this summer so we'll see how this all settles out.bb

Daily year round service service starts May 16th, slightly later than originally planned due to the delayed 321neo deliveries. Looks like the second OGG-LAX flight (red-eye) also starts later in June, vs the original June 1st resumption. Lots of shuffling in the fleet to provide as much of the schedule as possible. The good news is that 321neo deliveries are resuming soon.
