BA's least-dense 744s

Wed Apr 04, 2018 3:47 pm

Hi all,

Where do BA's least-dense 744s - with 275 seats - tend to operate? The version with 86 J.

Thanks,

James.

A few places, off the top of my head, with some more regular than others: JFK, LAX, SFO, DXB, PHL, KWI, IAD, SAN.

JFK have about 4 a day.

BOS usually gets this configuration as well.

There are currently 18 aircraft in this config. A lot of US destinations as well as Dubai Kuwait JNB.
Most popular US destinations are JFK,BOS,ORD,SAN,DFW,LAX,PHL.

Since the IATA Summer season started, they've been to JFK (lots), SFO, SEA, PHL, ORD, RUH, BOS, IAD, KWI, LOS, PHX, DFW, NBO, CPT, LAS, JNB. I believe the last 6 destinations are as subs either planned or last minute, whereas the first 10 are regular appearances.

So very system-wide then. Also good for fluctuating demand v. higher-density configurations.

Many thanks.

You can nearly guarantee that if the flight operates from Terminal 3 at LHR, then it is the denser (52J) 744 (with the unrefreshed interiors). Destinations include CPT, LAS, YVR, NBO. JFK also gets them, as there is one on the way right now (BA115).
http://my.flightmemory.com/shefgab Upcoming flights: AMS-RIX-BUD-VDA,ETH-TLV-FCO-LHR,STN-TXL-LCY,LTN-CPH-LTN,LGW-SZG,MUC-LHR

DFW seems to have switched from (predominantly) 86J during the winter timetable, to 52J from the start of the summer timetable.

YYZ used to get them before the 747 was removed from the route last year. I know Denver is listed, but I personally haven’t seen them operating to DEN, albeit I haven’t payed overtly close attention.

Worst case they can also sub for an A380 if one goes tech because F/J/W is pretty similar. Risk that you leave some Y passengers behind, but if it was a case of cancelling a flight or leaving some people behind then the Super Hi-J 744 is a good substitute.

It is quite an interesting aircraft to fly, it feels like Club goes on forever. Probably the closest thing around to an all-premium jumbo. This is off topic, but I have seen a 747 parked at A-gates at LHR T5 once. Does this happen often? It was pretty odd as I'm used to seeing the A320s there. I hadn't even realize there were a few 747-capable gates (the corners iirc).

There was some talk about a year ago amongst BA engineering super high J was coming out as they was just too many J seats.

I've sat in Club to JFK since however and every seat in Club back to Y was full.

Last August I flew LHR-JFK, the last flight of the day (8pm), in Club World in the super high J config. I sat in the bubble so I didn’t have the feeling if J going forever, but I could tell that every J seat was full. Lovely flight!
Why is flying so expensive? And why is flying well so much more?

What about it indeed.
Your question is?

If you mean which sort of 744 is used by BA on their flights there, the answer is none, the route was 772ER on the winter timetable and it is still 772ER on the summer timetable.

IAH is 2x daily on a B772. (With occasional B77W sub)

No B744 on the route.

I think the gates at T5 are all pretty random. Domestic flights have to use A-gates due to lack of immigration etc on both B767/A320 family and if not it’s bussed to the A-gates even if you park at the others so they avoid it. As for all others I think it’s all a bit random. I have no idea how often B747 use A bit in sure it’s somewhat regular.

No more BA 744 to Asia now?

They do drop into India sometimes (Delhi).

744s came off Delhi with the winter to summer timetable change. Nothing to say that 744s won't reappear in the future on one Asian route or another, but there are fewer 744s each year. Still plenty of BA variety - Asian airports see 772s, 77Ws, 788s, 789s and A380s this year.

I was on one to JFK last week. It's hilarious - the J section of the cabin stretches so far back into the aircraft.

Gate 518 is used quite a lot for arrivals, sees 744, 777 and 787 on there, 516 and 514 can take B744s too. The only time I saw all three with B744s was Christmas day 2008. Not seen 514 or 516 with a heavy since but 518 I have seen often.

It seems that the B747 stopped flying to DXB. All 3 daily flights are now operated by the B777-200ER.

They used to send 747 to IAH some time it was 1 777 1 747, 1 789 1 777, or 777. So when they did send the 747 which wasn't that long ago. Which dense 747 did they use?
