I was recently looking at an OAG from 1989 and I noticed a flight supposedly operated by Scandinavian Airlines System between Rio de Janeiro and Montevideo with 727 equipment.
The flight was SK 955 Copenhagen-Rio on a SAS DC-10 and then onto Montevideo with a 727 and SK 956 operating the reverse.
I know SAS was not a 727 operator so I am assuming this was SAS flight was operated by another carrier.
Does anyone have any information on who that carrier may have been? No other local Brazilian or Uruguayan carriers show a flight at the same time, so it is not simply a code-share.
Any information would be appreciated.

I believe it was on VASP.
Several airlines had similar interchanges in Brazil. Pan Am for example used VASP 737/727s as well for domestic connections.

Hi there, this may have been a Varig flight, as PLUNA was already operating its small B737-2A3 fleet by then, plying routes like GIG, AEP, POA, etc.
SAS had an equity investment in LA back then, but scaled back its routes in the region, including MVD, and ended up leaving the continent. Makes sense for them to have onward agreements with the likes of RG.

Most likely that was using RG-SC 727-100s. VASP got rid of the 727s in the early to mid 80s and pretty much was an exclusive domestic play until the 1990s.
SK wanted to buy 40% of AR back in 1988. Did not work out due to domestic politics in Argentina (what's new?). AR was then sold by those who opposed SK's investment to IB in 1990. We all know how that turned out. SK moved on and was part of the privatization of LA, but they only stayed there for less than a decade. In any case, see what has become of the old LAN Chile. No comments about AR. It has taken the airline almost 30 years to start to overcome years of misguided decisions.

Makes sense from an equipment standpoint, but cannot say I remember VASP at MVD? Cruzeiro (IATA: SC) definitely serviced GIG-MVD and they were not merged into Varig until 1993, so could be them.

Back then, VP had no scheduled international network, just the occasional charter flights to Aruba. The international scene was dominated by Varig and Cruzeiro, so I would expect this flight being operated by either of them. Also, VASP never flew to MVD and they had a small fleet of B727-200s, so I would imagine AOG would list it as 72S.
At the same time, VP operated on behalf of RAM on the CGH (later GRU)-GIG sector of its CMN-GIG fights.

Another example was TAME operating AF422's last leg from BOG to UIO. One of those flights ended in a CFIT crash into a mountain. Even though the crashed aircraft was flown by TAME on TAME metal, it counted as an Air France crash because it was operating under an Air France flight number. There is no longer an AF tag-on to UIO and the flight is now AF428.

In the 80s a few South American airlines engaged in flying for the European airlines doing domestic sectors (in Brazil) or regional ones. These were the days when GIG was the international gateway in Brazil and there was no GRU. LADECO (UC) flew for Swissair between Brazil and Chile.
Iberia based a couple of DC-9-32s in EZE and flew to SCL, ASU and MVD around 1991-92.

Ohhhh the memories I have from that age.... I was a kid in the 80’s and I clearly recall my frequent visits to the Airport, the good old Carrasco airport with an observation deck along the ramp....and like other already said, only Varig and Cruzeiro served MVD with 727 from Brazil.

What a weird coincidence! I was just watching "The Shape of Water" with my father and I paused the movie cause I wanted to read a billboard that was advertising SAS flights to Europe.
My father said he recognized that brand and when I asked him how he said they used to fly to Montevideo. I wonder if he just saw an ad back then for the connections or something. He even knew they're from Scandinavia lol.

The planes used on those services just had the VASP, LADECO, VARIG or CRUZEIRO liveries. It was just a flight or two a week, at the most.

They also had 727 flights operated between Greenland and CPH operated by Transair Sweden.

I was a very small boy in the 1970’s and I remember visiting Carrasco’s main 1940’s-style check in hall and seeing SAS counters, all the way at the end of the ‘old’ hall. MVD then went through a ‘schlocky’ and cheap ‘renovation’ in the 1980’s and the hall disappeared. The new terminal (privately operated) opened in 2009.
Following up my earlier post, very likely the carrier flying SAS passengers onward from GIG to MVD was Cruzeiro with their 727-100. I took that connecting flight from GIG-MVD, connecting from PA’s Kennedy flight, way back in the late 1970’s.
