JFK pushed out of top 20

Mon Apr 09, 2018 1:23 pm

Per Bloomberg:

https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles ... t-airports

"New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport is no longer ranked among the 20 busiest in the world, thanks to the rush in Asia.

Among those pushing out JFK was New Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport that made its debut on the table last year at No. 16, according to Airports Council International rankings released Monday. The Indian airfield was also the fastest-growing on the list, with passenger growth at 14 percent, followed by the 10 percent clip at China’s Guangzhou, which climbed two notches to No. 13."
if assumptions could fly, airliners.net would be the world's busiest airport

JFK has EWR serving international locations and LGA for domestic. So combined NYC may still be the busiest for air travel. And most of the passengers from the 2 NYC airports (except EWR) are O & D passengers. DEL has only one airport and no city close by which has an airport (within 150 mile radius).

London is far busier than NYC in total PAX traffic.

DEN overtook JFK in 2017 and DEN made it to the list vs. JFK.

JFK 2017 AAGR: 0.75%
EWR 2017 AAGR: 7.31%
LGA 2017 AAGR: -1.11%

If you combine all the 3 airports, it is massive but solo they do have misses. DEL on the other hand does not have competition from any airport and practically serves as the only airport for major international destinations across the Indian states of UP, Uttaranchal, Himachal, Haryana and possibly Punjab in addition to Delhi area itself.

I believe NYC is #2 as a city system in traffic behind LON.

For City-wide traffic, NYC has around 130 million passengers while Shanghai (PVG+SHA) has around 120 million in 2017,
highly likely either Shanghai or Beijing (the huge second airport is coming) will takeover the #2 very soon.

Isn't TYO up there as well, granted though not growing at the same rate as Shanghai or Beijing.

I believe Tokyo is 3rd and Shanghai 4th.

Meanwhile, London is steaming ahead with 170 million passengers a year.

Bloomberg click-bait. 'Asian airports grow to dominate Top 20' just wouldn't have the same urgency for North American readers, would it?

Where does LA fit on the spectrum of total passengers if you include LAX, BUR, ONT, SNA, and LGB?

I thought it was IST with Turkey generally growing like crazy. But while not the top airport in growth figures, it keeps climbing the list.

Also look for Istanbul to overtake other cities. Total pax last year for IST and SAW was 95.1 million. Turkey has grown their pax numbers with 450% between 2000-2017!

http://www.anna.aero/2018/03/07/turkish ... ords-2015/

From the Turkish aviation thread the growth is even better this year

JAN-MAR
IST +22%
SAW +19%

Istanbul is growing to become the leading aviation hub!

Big congrats to Denver! Airport grew by over 3 million passengers in 2017 and has grown 10 million plus over the last decade.

I believe their are the 5th busiest in US and 20th world wide.

With a increase of gates coming in the next few years I expect to see DEN to continue to climb a bit higher as well.

The thread talks about JFK not New York. One airport!
