Union action in Germany 10/04

Mon Apr 09, 2018 6:39 pm

Various unions in Germany having one day strikes from 10th to 13th of April, before the next round of talks at the weekend.

Tuesday includes Ver.di who provide lots of ground services at Frankfurt, Berlin and Munich. LH have already cancelled 800 flights tomorrow.

Flights should be back to normal on Wednesday as they turn their attention elsewhere. Happy my bins were collected this morning

Lufthansa cancels 800 flights amid strike action

Tue Apr 10, 2018 8:58 am

9th April.
"The walk-out does not involve Lufthansa's own staff but public sector workers such as ground handlers at Frankfurt, Munich, Cologne and Bremen airports."

Quite typical from Lufthansa. After all, it had been a fair few months since the last strike.

Hotel prices at Frankfurt go trough the roof right now due to stranded passenger's demand.

To strike when there is a legitimate reason is one thing, to cause such chaos with a "proactive warning strike" is something completely different. Such tactics won't win the unions any public support for their position.

As is clearly stated in the article linked by the OP and quoted again in his post, there is no strike on the part of Lufthansa employees, but rather public sector airport workers.

Exactly. Ver.Di are a nightmare. I am in that Union, but as soon as I get home on Thursday (if my flight operates) I am cancelling my membership. They did absolutely nothing for me when I worked for Air Berlin, other than take my money every month, and now they destroy the travel plans of thousands of people. For me, the compensation claims that will ensue should be footed by Ver.Di and the Ground Handling companies that go on strike, rather than the Airlines.

Fully agree with you. There won`t be too many compensation claims as strike is excluded from the EU regulation compensation. The only thing airlines need to do is try to assist passengers and rebook them on next possible options.

As someone who was personally affected by LH with their last strike, I can say in this as the OP stated, this isn't on LH but for all airlines that fly into the affected airports.

This may not be on LH but it is on Germany and quite frankly it gets to be a point of no return. This is the 5th action in Germany that had impacted me and although a LH SENATOR I'M CLOSE TO GIVING IT UP ----

As the Union Representatives in the Works Council in my company started agitating for no good reason other than to act out and forment industrial action the Employees of my company voted accordingly in the election last month and now they only represent about 19% of the works council. I don't think we'll ever get rid of them completely as many of those who identify as Socialist will be guided by their beliefs to always vote for the Union nominees in spite of how badly the Union nominees behave.
