MEX-IST A possibility with the 789?

Tue Apr 10, 2018 3:41 pm

I know this topic has been widely discussed before, but I would like to revisit the topic in the light of new a/c aquisition. TK has expressed its intention to enter MEX repeatedly (I know it is slot constrained blablabla), and has not been able to do so due to lack of an equipment that may be able to do it profitably (Some argue the 77W is too big a plane to do it, and would not be able to do it anyway on the east-bound flight, and the 330's would not be able to get there). With the new 787 order, would they be able to reach MEX?
Keep i mind that MEX-NRT is 7004 mi, while MEX-IST would be 7104 mi. The unfeasible nonstop MEX-ICN is in the 7500's

During the past few days, several news sources have been mentioning that TK is indeed very interested in launching CUN and potentially MEX next year, with 789s. I saw a CAPA headline but the article is for paying subscribers only. Other sources that carried the news are Expansión.mx and El Economista. They are mentioning a triangular route involving CUN.

Does anyone have more information?
Upcoming flights:
April/May: AM MEX-SCL 788 (J), AM EZE-MEX 789 (J).

Turkey-Mexico currently discussing an ASA.
Yes look for MEX pax flying (cargo 777F recently started) most likely via CUN on return.
Another issue is lack of viable slots at MEX.

TK purchased 787-9 not -8 which NH and AM both flew to NRT. With -8 having severe payload restriction in order to make it nonstop, I would seriously doubt -9 can make it out with viable load (without a technical stop of course). I would say 99% of the chance if TK ever launches IST it will go via a third port, at least on its return trip.

Curious, could 778 or 779 make IST-MEX and MEX-IST non-stop with a full load of passengers?

But doesn't the 789 have better range than the 788?
According to the Wikipedia, the 789's still air range is 7635 nm. Couldn't be this enough to fly a 6200 nm route with reasonable payload?

Factor in the high-altitude MEX has and you have a totally different story re: takeoff performance.Never leave altitude out of MEX discussion.

IST-MEX likely but not a chance for MEX-IST especially 779 IMHO. Too big and not enough power to counter the loss of performance.

Any chance Turkish Air joins Skyteam?

Why would they? They are in Star Alliance and have several importante codeshare relationships with other Star members. Exiting an alliance often means paying steep penalty fees. I don't see TK defecting.

They are pretty involved in Star as pointed out above so I don't see it happening. On top of all the codeshare agreements, they jointly own a low cost carrier along with LH: SunExpress.

If a Turkish airline were to join SkyTeam it would be Atlas Global, they are already pretty close with AF/KL. (And this partnership is another reason why I think TK won't join ST)

So according to a couple of articles regarding TK announcing IST-MEX soon it looks like they requested 3 time slots (3 weekly flights) so its to assume they took the ones that were granted originally to EK? Also read they it will be IST-MEX nonstop and possibly MEX-CUN-IST on the way back but only as technical/refueling stop. Hopefully it does work out for TK unlike EK unfortunately. Other points mentioned is that even an IST-CUN route is in their future they want to start with service to MEX first. Also plane most likely to be used is the 787-9.

Not really “unfortunate” though. EK could have flown DXB-MEX-CUN-MEX or similar, but they decided not to. If we keep letting EK fly any route they want, the rest of the other non-subsidized airlines will cease to exist. So for once, the Mexican Government did a good thing. Fair is fair.

Good on TK. They have the advantage that they can also feed MEX with traffic from the Middle East, North Africa and even Israel! Sounds like a hit.
