Class action lawsuit to fight Montreal airport noise pollution gets go-ahead

Sun Apr 22, 2018 11:03 am

It's been reported by the CBC. Will be interesting to see how it ends up. Independently of this class action, I wonder how long before authorities start considering moving YUL away from the city?

The lawsuit was filed on behalf of residents in as many as nine neighbourhoods who live along the airport's flight paths, including Saint-Laurent, Ahuntsic, Saint-Michel and Villeray.

Great! Shut down YUL and have everyone have to drive to YOW instead. Then YOW can have lots of international service. Seriously though, what do they reasonably think will happen? Only have the airport open from 1030-1430?

Nah, too complicated when you have a white elephant sitting there doing nothing only a "few" miles to the North. ;)

I wonder if any of these idiots ever is on a flight after 23:00? Planes are far quieter than they used to be. I wonder who pays their legal bills?

I get that if you live right at the end of the runway, aircraft noise is very loud. However, I've lived along the approach path of a major airport for years, and I can barely hear the noise of the aircraft a few thousand feet up. A truck going by on the street is far louder.

The readings of the noise "endured" by these Montreal residents range from 38 to 59 decibels. According to the decibel chart I've found, 38 decibels is about equivalent to the noise of a quiet room, or the noise emitted by a functioning computer. 59 decibels is about the level of a normal conversation. That doesn't exactly sound unbearably life-shattering to me.

It's a sad day when junk litigation out on the fringe becomes case law. The airport and its operations have long been in place before the mentioned neighborhoods came into existence.

Approach path ain't the problem, departure path is. I live east of YUL and due to winds coming mostly from the west aircraft land and take of towards west, obviously. East of the airport aircraft are losing altitude with engines near minimal; you don't hear them at all. But west of the airport is a different story as their engines if in TOGO so at max spool and noise.

I believe YUL has changes its take off path a few years ago t o optimize and lower noise. While most of citizens now have less noise there are some that have more and I believe these are the ones suing.

Actually it's been my experience that aircraft on final are noisier. engines at 50-60% plus lots of noise from the flaps/slats. While engine power is higher on climb there is less air frame noise and they climb quickly, vs fly slowly which increases the duration of the exposure.
