WestJet uses 737Max on Alberta to Hawaii

Wed Apr 25, 2018 12:43 am

I noticed WestJet WS1884 (YEG-OGG) and WS1851 (OGG-YYC) today are operated by a B737 Max instead of the normal B763. As the seasonal service is coming to a close are they using the 737 with less less passengers or does it actually have the range to fly non-stop with a full load? Next season WestJet will be the only carrier flying widebodid aircraft to Hawaii from Canada. Hope this does not change.

The 767 that was supposed to operate had a MNTC issue. So it was down gauged to a MAX for the flight yesterday.

B737 MAX 8 range is 3550 nm with 162 passengers.

YEG-OGG is 2760 nm. So even with some headwinds, the route is doable on a Max8.
us Air Traffic Controllers have a good record, we haven't left one up there yet !!

YEG-OGG should be within 737-8 range. It is 2800nm, which is shorter than some routes that the 737MAX flies which are over 3000nm. OGG-YEG may be a problem due to the short runway at OGG.

Next year GOL is planning nonstop flights from Brazil to Florida with the MAX which excees 3200nm.

6 hours, 44 minutes flying time this morning on YEG-OGG. Climbed directly to FL380.
