There's significant ski traffic from South Florida. MIA/FLL is one of Aspen's largest local markets, and AA has been flying Miami-Vail for well over 20 years.

These probably have revenue guarantees, and HDN already has New York service on United.

That’s certainly a lot of short haul cuts in order to get the frames needed to fly the transcon stuff. I am really surprised they cut Seattle Portland and slc by one each. Those are actually performing quite well.

Looks like they are returning 10 slots

You had mentioned that SJC - LGB was weak. Looks like cuts across the board from LGB all across the west coast, including SFO and OAK.

I’d be surprised they will just let the 10 slots go to anyone. Heard from a B6 employee at lax that they plan on B6 to share the 10 slots to Hawaiian to expand A321 lgb- Hawaii flights. But we’ll see. I’d be surprised if they reduced the flying just so a competitor takes them

It's true, I think LGB is at play now. I could see AS, HA, DL and UA all requesting additional/new flights which would affect how many flights WN can add.

2 DL (for SEA)
3 AS (for SEA)
1 HA (for HI)
4 UA (for SFO)

That in and of itself makes 10, we will have to wait and see who wants in first, but WN may get little to nothing in this.

LGB is really close to downtown LA, slots could be valuable to more than just WN.

You’re assuming those airlines want those slots.

They are not coveted, that is why B6 scooped them up. It is also why they are now giving them up.

There has been a false sense of value
over the last year as WN came into town...but here’s a little secret...WN doesnt want 40 flights a day from LGB either.

I suspect if B6 left tomorrow, there would be extra slots to spare once the dust settled

Great to see B6 back at ONT. Back in the day, ONT was one of B6’s first west coast destinations. Bounced between 1 and 2 JFK flights for a while before they cut it. I know that the OIAA and B6 have been trying to hammer out some sort of deal. NY, Florida, and DC flights have been on ONT’s wishlist and B6 could fill 2 of those. Maybe we will see B6 try to spread out a little between LGB/LAX/BUR/ONT instead of having all their eggs in one LGB basket now.

How do the slot awards with LGB work? I’m sure they are pretty tired of the AS “pull out method” there. If they returned it would be what about the 5th attempt at LGB?

Maybe they’d be more favorable to give it to someone like WN who will not only make it work but stick with it and possibly a few to HA?

I disagree. I think B6 was the wrong airline for LBG.

If you take the WN model in CA, decently, high frequency service to SFO Bay Area (OAK, SJC, SFO), SMF, LAS, DEN, PHX, you can see how easy it would be for WN to have some 20+ daily flights from LGB.

If anything, LGB could provide WN some relief in LAX, to allow WN to add additional flights at LAX to other cities.

Lol you obviously have not seen wn yields out of lgb. This is just a very low yielding airport. Wn won’t be able to have enough slots to run 7 to 10 a day schedule to one of it’s fortress hubs. With at most 5 flights a day to a destination, this airport will continue to pick up the low yielding Crowd.

Reading the press telegram.com sounds like 12 slots returned.
WN could easily add 12 more slots.
Going back to the 80's for the LGB land grab.
The airport awarded every new entry and current airlines 2 slots each.
That gives 6 bundles of 2 each.
But given the history of failures at LGB I don't see everyone rushing to add LGB.

LGB is currently a contracted station for WN. There's a ground ops contractual percentage/language threshold which would require LGB to become a full service WN station below and above wing. WN would have to factor these cost in growing at LGB.

This is also true. 12 I believe is the key number. When Southwest reaches 12 daily flights, I believe that is when they must operate the airport using WN employees.

Sorry I certainly didn’t mean it in a way to insult sjc. I figured they would go the route of less routes rather than less frequency per route.

The yields on sfo oak and las were as bad as sjc though.

I don’t think they should be cutting back sea and pdx here. But my guess is that we might see more adjustments here by next year. It certainly wouldn’t surprise me if they completely pull out of lgb.

By my count it looks more like 11 slots. They're dropping 13 daily short-haul flights and adding 11 weekly flights to BOS/BZN/HDN. It might even be 12 slots if they end up reducing some markets on the days they operate to BZN & HDN; for example, it looks like LGB-SLC is only twice daily on Sa/Su from looking at the booking engine in December. I'm really surprised by the way they chose to cut flights to the Bay Area down to two each to OAK/SFO/SJC. I can't see that being competitive with the frequency at SNA & LAX.

As MAH4546 pointed out, it's fairly likely that ski resorts are helping out with subsidies on these flights.

HA is already taking a slot which B6 will return to the city. But there's no way HA would take all those slots just to help out B6. In the end, the value in keeping LGB slots out of the hands of competitors just isn't there -- LGB is the lowest-yielding airport in the region and it seems unlikely that will change any time soon. If you can't be more profitable keeping an asset out of the hands of a competitor, it's probably not an asset worth keeping.

In the end, B6 grossly underestimated the power and virulence of California's hyper-NIMBYs. I think they expected a warm reception along the lines of what they've received in NYC/BOS/FLL with the slot restrictions at LGB being relaxed or even going away entirely. The local residents who fought the FIS at LGB will absolutely view this as a huge victory.

You East Coasters can fly DL via MSP! :)

Yeah we have countless 1-stop options. As a UA FF it's either via DEN or ORD, typically :) But a non-stop would seal the deal in my indecision to buy the Ikon pass :)

It is awfully expensive to fly to BZN from MDT. UA isn’t too bad depending on the time of year, but DL is outrageous fares with two stops.
That being said, Big Sky is to me the best skiing in the US, just wish we had better options on the east coast. BZN is a beautiful airport.

i'm counting the weekly flights to BZN/HDN as 1 slot, but that's probably wrong. Since they are most likely just cutting back one of the other flights for those days. They said they are going from 35 to 23 flights and we know HA is taking one of those slots already, so 11 more will get returned this time.

As for OAK/SFO/SJC, I agree that's a very curious move. Going all to SFO would've made more sense.

It seems to me that they see LA area dragging down their yield and that there is no sense keeping these short haul flights going when they just get hammered by WN strengths all across California. So they made the only logical move. And 2 years from now, who knows if they will still be in LGB.

I don't see why other carriers would rush in though. The yields were really not good for WN/DL/AA. But I guess the forbidden fruit of getting slots will always keep carriers waiting for them.

Reading the press telegram.com sounds like 12 slots returned.

well HA is definitely taking one already and possibly a second one. DL is ahead of them in the pool and probably will get 2 for SEA at minimum. So there is 8 slots they could add I guess.

Ouch!

When they said increased transcon flying, I was hoping to hear about adding EWR-LAX or additional frequency on FLL-LAX. Nope, just more A320s across the country that probably will require tech stops every 3 days during winter time. At least BUR transcon should do pretty well, I'm not sure about the additional BOS-LGB flight though. Seems like a lot of added capacity in the BOS to LA area market.

So anyone still think EWR-LAX, EWR-SFO, and Midwest expansion will still happen?
I know IND is crowded to BOS/FLL/NYC but it still seems like a major network hole. (I admit I'm biased but STL, CMH, and CVG might be other options)
Amazing how close rumors were to reality on today's announcements.

I think IND will still happen this year. These moves don't use up any additional resources.

I have to agree that BigSky has the best skiing. Oh I wish B6 would have added BOS-BZn instead of BOS-HDN :)

Understood, no problem. You called the low numbers, which must have been worse then they appeared, since the are cutting across the west.

But I guess the forbidden fruit of getting slots will always keep carriers waiting for them.

Nah, not really. B6 had been sitting on unused slots at LGB for years before WN made its request for slots. The outcome of it all was predictable. B6 had been able to keep LGB marginally profitable or at the least not heavily money-losing at 20-25 daily flights prior to WN's entry. Once WN added LGB and made it known to the City that they'd gladly take more slots, B6 had to either use the slots or lose them. And that's how the current situation came into being: The expanded operation at LGB loses more money so B6 is cutting it back down and it's likely that apart from DL or HA taking one or two more slots, the only party interested in slots will be WN.

And 2 years from now, who knows if they will still be in LGB.

One key issue might be real estate; specifically the new terminal. We don't know what sort of commitment B6 has with respect to paying off the costs and that might keep more service at LGB unless/until they can get out of it.

Yup, and probably the best one to make LGB work. If all WN did was LGB-OAK/SJC/SMF/LAS/PHX that would eat up 10 slots and provide LGB with access to a good sized chunk of the WN system.

Lgb at 2 flights a day to these airports would have disastrous yields. Actually, we already see how bad it is from their current flights to oak las and smf.

What a mess, but I don't blame them. Let AS fight WN for the short haul in California.

Actually WN had slightly better yields to OAK in 2017Q3 than B6, but only by about 3%. WN already does 4x daily to OAK, though. They only go 2x daily to SMF and in that time period they had 10% lower yields than B6.

If you look at how WN operates in short-haul markets, then it's fairly easy to predict that they might add a flight to OAK, maybe a couple to SMF, and 3 or 4 to LAS. They're not going to spread things around to a bunch of airports apart from maybe a daily flight or two to DEN or PHX which would connect up with a bunch of the network. But they don't even really need to do that considering that LAS is one of the best-connected stations in the network, so 3-4 daily to LAS would handle O&D and connect LGB to most places they serve.

As a flyer out of BUR, really glad to see the increase in BUR flights. And we have a family member in BOS so the BUR BOS service is greatly appreciated. I hope they can make the route successful.

Exactly! Now if only WN can add FLL, BWI and MDW we can get all corners covered with some transcons.

Are red-eye flights that arrive before 5 am popular? Seems like an awful time to arrive somewhere at 4:40 am.

BOS would be a nice add, maybe 2-3 weekly during prime season, since Big Sky is getting popular. Though Vermont resorts are not that far away either.
Looking forward to riding Ramcharger8, seats look more comfortable than any economy aircraft seat, though unloading at the top will be interesting....
