Airbus A380 'fifth' contrail? Possible fuel dumping?

Thu Apr 26, 2018 1:35 pm

So, I was just minding my own business when I noticed a plane with what seemed to be a single uniform contrail. Upon a closer inspection it turned out to be an Airbus A380. That confused me a bit, so I quickly took a picture right before it went back into clouds, and from the picture you can see a single contrail being emitted from the tail of the plane.
Is that what A380 fuel dumping looks like? Or is it possible that some other part of the plane, like the AC or APU made that contrail? I've never seen anything like that before, so I'm just a bit confused now.

And please, I expect serious answers and none of that 'chemtrail' stuff...

Oh yeah, looks like that now that I googled it, which I assume I should do before posting it...
I just always thought that contrails are created because of the immense heat of the engines, and it made no sense to me that the APU would be running on a higher temperature than the engines (there were no contrails from engines at the time)

Fuel dumping is carried out from valves in the wings anyway, not from the base of the tail.

Not in this case but if you’re ever on the Atlantic where you can often be close to another airliner for a lot of time and you see contrails that are brief. Wispy then go away....

It’s lav sink water getting dumped over board.

Obviously coming from near the centreline of the fuselage.

More likely water draining from sinks or galley.

Where do they put the shower water on that thing. Is it dumped or go into a waste tank? Too big to be from sinks and galleys imo

Waste tanks. They were planning to recycle it for service but were not allowed to.

Yep crew cleaning up prior to arrival emptied half used containers and ice.

Google 'drain mast on the plane' and you will see some good pics.

With RVSM, I often flew under other planes for quite some distance. Observed overboard water from drains quite often.
