What's up with MH's A380s? Will they keep/upgrade them?

Mon Apr 30, 2018 4:51 am

The plan keeps on changing...... At first they said they were going to sell them. Then they said they would convert them into high density A380s. Now they say they are keeping all of them.

What's the latest plan? Will they keep/upgrade them?

Only couple weeks ago they signed a 3-year contract to operate charters to Saudi Arabia starting in August.

This follows succesful proof of concept charters using 2 of the frames this winter on similar charters to Saudi Arabia for passenges that originated in China, Indonesia in addition to Malaysia.

MH is also out currently soliciting bids for new cabin furnishings to convert frames into approx 700 seats by 2020.

Just had a look at the different A380 configurations, if you blend Emirates' 2-class configuration with Asiana's upper deck rear economy section you get about 650:

Emirates: Image
Asiana: Image

In that config it'd be a comfy ride, especially upstairs; however, I feel there's plenty of scope for getting over 700 seats.

It seems KUL-ICN is a regular scheduled run for the MH A380's currently, with the occasional SYD flight.
