Wed May 02, 2018 11:23 am

When was the last decade a DC-8 was in Lihue? Or Hawaii in general, for that matter.

I know Murray(became National)had a -63 there in the mid 2000's. It came to YIP non-stop but that's all I can remember. They must be going there because of the incredible amount of rain they got the other day causing bad floods.

edit, by there I mean Hawaii, I am pretty sure it was in PHNL.

HNL would most likely be the ATI Combis, so that would be 2013 or so.

Ahhh yes, how could I forget about them.

As far as LIH, I bet it was back in UAL days.

Offhand guess: UA never scheduled DC8s to Lihue.

Someone has to be in LIH to get some pics. Fantastic news.

So good to see the "old lady' still has missions to be flown.

Or 1996. It was operated by Arrow Air.

Bummer, as I was just over there yesterday. Looks like it will be coming here to HNL this afternoon

Anybody please correct me if I'm wrong, but I seem to recall that UA did use -71's between LIH and the West Coast; pretty sure that's what they started LIH service with.

NSP8 is Samaritans Purse, a Christian International Relief Organization that uses DC-8s to transport goods, people etc... cool to see the old girl up!

Likely true, if they started Lihue flights before October 1991. Did they?

I flew twice to LIH on DC8's with my father when he was a First Officer and later a Captain for United Airlines. His trips were: SFO-OGG-LIH-OGG-SFO and SFO-LIH-SFO in the 80's. Great flights on the 8 and layovers in Lihue!

Turns out UA flew DC-8s to LIH until 1988.

The topic was mistakenly moved to Mil Av. It has been moved back to Civ Av where it belongs.

It was at CLT in February, used to fly the coffin of Rev. Billy Graham to Washington, DC and back prior to his funeral. Graham's son Franklin runs Samaritan's Purse.

Departed HNL early Thursday morning direct to GSO. Just happened to be out there this morning and enjoyed watching it depart off 08 R immensely. :)

This plane got upgraded with CFM56 engines, right? So it probably sucks away less fuel than two 737-700s? That wouldn't be that bad for such an old bird, especially considering the low accquisition costs. J maintenance could get difficult soon, when spares run out...

Looks like they were in Kauai to bring relief after the recent flooding. Great to see them bringing supplies and food to those in need. God bless their mission!

She also did some serious work last fall after the Hurricanes hit the USVI and Puerto Rico..and adjacent islands. Shuttling bottled water, food, fuel, generators and such day after day, with generally 8-10 hours down time at GSO daily as I recall from looking at flightaware.

This magnificent DC8-72 shows there is still life and quite usable utility in a few of these frames. You can contribute to Samaritans Purse and direct any (or all) of the amount of your contribution to "Mission Aviation" and it will go to supporting the costs of maintaining this beautiful DC8. I do monthly.
