Qatar Airways to wet lease 3 A330's to BA to cover RR engine issues

Thu May 03, 2018 2:39 pm

Qatar Airways is considering loaning some of its 787-8's to British Airways to cover the shortfall due to the RR engine issues, similar to what QR did loaning A320's to BA.

Qatar Airways 787-8's are powered by GE.

British Airways stakeholder and Oneworld partner Qatar Airways is considering loaning planes, including wide-body models like the Boeing 787, to BA.
While Qatar Airways previously loaned a series of Airbus A320 jets to British Airways after a Saudi-led blockade forced it to close some Gulf routes, the transfer currently under scrutiny would be the first involving long-haul planes.
It would both soak up excess capacity at the Gulf carrier while easing BA's fleet pressures as some of its own Boeing 787 jets get emergency overhauls.

Seems like a good idea all round.

With the no fly zone rules against Qatar it makes sense to use those frames somewhere

Loaning? Would Qatar mind loaning me a 787 for a weekend?

Probably not if they owned a piece of you, you needed it, and they couldn't use it.

It would be fun to see some photographs of QR's GE powered 787s at BA's LHR terminal. Do we have any long term knowledge on how BA's GE and RR 777s have faired over time?

So not 787-8's then or are they leasing those too ?. Presumably the A330's will receive minimal BA branding and not full livery though, something I think would really suit the A330.

So assume the cost of the 787's are too high or they are not available?
If BA has no A330's I will assume the cost of additional training and or ground handling equipment is minimal compared to the cost of getting same a/c different engines.
A lot of assumptions on my part......

No BA Branding. A bit like the A320 last year. QR A330 in QR paint, QR crew and QR service. Just a standard wet lease.

Would they use these frames at LGW and send some 777's up to LHR perhaps?

Will these aircraft get temporary G- registrations? A7- registrations and QR call signs may be an issue depending on where they are being deployed due to the blockade.

Doubt they'll be re-registered for a 4 month wet lease. My guess is that some US east Coast routes will see the QR 330.

Depending on the routes they fly on, passengers may see a significantly better product than BA offer

Cabin wise yes, but they will still get the naff BA catering.

Good choice.

The A330 is about the only aircraft in Qatar's fleet that is not a massive step up in cabin quality from from what BA offers. Especially in J and F. Avoids shooting themselves in the foot quite as badly.

The leased QR A320s had free food and drink.

I flew on one of the QR A320s VIE LHR last year and yes full free service, even with hot food and not a M&S sandwich in sight. Big improvement on the norm. A nice flight.

I'm hoping that they put the QR A330s on routes I'm flying, for Y class pax it will be a step up in experience from a lot of BA's fleet.

From what I heard the wide body fleet was fully utilised as many routes that were previously operated on a narrowbody needed an upgrade due to the increase in flight time. Plus QR has announced a lot of new destinations since the blockade to cover the aircraft excess.

As mentioned in the article, Al Baker said routes will be trimmed to make some aircraft available for the route.

My guess is some Intra Gulf flights with multiple daily will lose one or two daily flights to cover this short term lease.
Let's fly! Unless it's on a CRJ 200, then I'll stay down here.

Must have a lot of spare A330 capacity with this and those transferred to IG. It will be interesting as to what the soft product will be...although they’re using a Speedbird callsign.
