WN1709 today

Wed May 09, 2018 10:08 pm

Hey all. Sitting here at BDL. Just a beautiful day across the east coast. Noticed a scheduled flight to BOS, wN1709 on FlightAware. They look like they tried to land in BOS but diverted to BDL after and now are getting a new a/c to continue. Anyone know what happened?

Current METAR at Boston:

KBOS 092154Z 08012KT 1/4SM R04R/1800V3000FT FG OVC002 09/09 A3016 RMK AO2 SLP211 T00940089

1/4-mile visibility, fog, overcast clouds at 200. Completely different from the weather at Bradley, which is:

KBDL 092151Z 17014KT 10SM FEW075 FEW090 BKN220 BKN250 24/07 A3008 RMK AO2 SLP184 T02390067

10-mile visibility, few clouds at 7,500 and 9,000. As for needing a new plane, I'm guessing they had an issue with the plane prior to landing and it needed to be fixed.

Wow huge difference. Interesting. They swapped with another flight so the aircraft swap could’ve been out of the abundance of caution and once the aircraft was cleared They swapped. Both flights are boarding according to the FIDS. In fact they just accounted the final boarding call in the terminal with the destination as Boston. So some pax must’ve hit the bar during the unexpected layover

The one airplane probably had a MEL limiting the cat II/iii capability or a failure enroute that limited cat II/iii capability. That’d make sense then to swap the frames.

Just like the old days when you could fly BDL-BOS!

There are a few non HUD equipped planes also. May not necessarily be an MEL.

Was on this flight today ... aircraft was not cat 2 or 3 capable because of a hud limitation, and diverted after a missed approach due to visibility dropping below cat 1 mins in BOS.

Well there we go. How was the spirits of the passengers? As I said they were doing a few final boarding calls, so presumably a few decided to either hit the bar or drive on? Looks like the only delay once on the ground was waiting for the replacement plane.
