I just read an interesting article titled “In the future, Iran could 3D-print its way around sanctions” The Rand Cooperation is predicting by the middle of this century, 3D printing could make nations like Iran self-sufficient when it comes to maintaining fleets of foreign-built aircraft.

Iran already manufactures spare parts for their commercial aircraft, as well as their military aircraft. Probably not with 3D-printers though.

Could they? Certainly, assuming the infrastructure exists. The real question is, would these parts meet spec? In other words, would a plane equipped with them be allowed to fly to other countries with what could be viewed as counterfeit parts? That's the real issue - safety. Aviation parts have long paper trails for obvious reasons. These parts wouldn't and that might make anything other than flights within the country extremely problematic.

Well since Iranian F-14 and 747-200s are still flying they obviously know what they are doing.

Yes they can, but there is no need. I am sure there are snake oil sales persons all over the world who can "source" original parts for the right price.

Iran has advanced and sophisticated production capabilities. They make aircraft, rockets, ships, cars...all sorts of vehicles, and have for years.
While not up to western standards...in some areas, they aren't far behind. Basically, whatever it takes to make airline travel within the country as safe and reliable as practical within the confines of, mostly absurd and short sighted, sanctions.
Whether it takes making their own parts or buying under the table, the job usually gets done.

With geo-politics getting increasingly interesting day by day; is this where COMAC makes an entry (into Iran specifically in this case?). The possibilities are endless...Mr Putin & Mr Xi peddling their wares (COMAC planes and other hardware) in exchange for 1) oil (china needs it but Russia probably doesn't) + 2) a military base?
we'll see...how things play out over a 10, 15 or even a 20 year period.
