Did GE & Snecma, CFM International try to fix something that was not broken with CFM56 series engines?

I just came across this 2009 article where CFM International traded 1,000 pounds in weight on a twin-engine aircraft from Titanium alloy fan blades to composites turbofan blades. Can any with this type of power plant maintenance experience explain which of the two materials are more prone to naked eye invisible cracks?

I’m pretty sure this upgrade was for the CFM56-7BE. Which is not the engine affected by the cracks.
