A330 Operators - Europe to Australia with One Stop - Possible?

Thu Jun 07, 2018 1:05 pm

Is it possible to fly to Australia from the UK or anywhere else in Europe on the A330 with just one stop/connection?

I think the A330-200 has the range to do it, but not 100% sure.

Just curious if there are any airlines that offer this, as love the 2-4-2 configuration in economy.

Sure, MEL-MLE-LHR with the A330-300

Yes it’s quite possible using Finnair and combined some of the Chinese carriers today.

Why not? SAS flies ARN-HKG (8,220 km) with A330-300s, HKG-MEL is "only" 7,390 km.

Yeah, there would probably be countless possible ways to do it, especially with self connections and long layovers. Fairly sure I’ve done it on KE from BNE to Paris.

At least two theoretically possible ways via Africa
PER to JNB to LHR on South African.
PER to MRU to CGN on Air Mauritius/Eurowings.

In Asia:
MEL to CMB to LHR on Sri Lankan
BNE/SYD to ICN to ZAG on Korean Air.

China Southern does have some flights from EU to CAN and from CAN to AU on A330, e.g. AMS-CAN-MEL.

FWIW, QF made last year a charter for the Australian Soccer Team from SYD to SAP via HNL on an A333. I guess it's perfectly doable coming from LON to Australia.

Slight correction there, UL are using their 332 into MEL for now.

Otherwise, yes, there are plenty examples such as those already given and until October you can get to PER via AUH on EY as well.

Also ADL, always with A332.

Etihad currently fly A330-200's PER to AUH, which is over half way to LHR, and I've flown Etihad A330-300 AUH to DUS, so yes, it could be done

You have good chances to find a connection solely on A330 if you look at Chinese airlines. I once did TXL-PEK-PVG-SYD-NKG-PEK-TXL all on A330 with a combination of HU and MU. Wouldn’t do it again though.

This is one epic adventure.....any reason why you wont do it again?

I just did it because it was the cheapest option. I don’t really fancy traveling on Chinese carriers. It always comes with these pointless regulations aka that you’re not allowed to switch on your mobile phone at all onboard (not even in flight mode). Then Chinese airline food doesn’t really appeal to me. I just had better experiences doing the BA run from LHR via SIN to SYD. If you take the A380 on the upper deck in economy you have 2-4-2 + a bin for your stuff right next to you at the wall. That was the best economy experience I had thus far.
These are just my experiences though. I know plenty of people who enjoy riding on Chinese carriers so give it a go if you want to find out. I wouldn’t say it was bad, it’s just that IMO it can be better on other carriers.

Easier via BKK using AY/QF codeshares. Most routings go via SIN/HKG (AY 350) but BKK with mixed 350/333 is possible too, checked next winter:

LHR-HEL AY1336 (321ER)
HEL-BKK AY143 (333)
BKK-SYD AY5001 (333)

SYD.BKK AY5002 (333)
BKK-HEL AY144 (333)
HEL-LHR AY1331 (350)

Works from MAN too.

I know it's a bit off-topic but QF and Airbus have done delivery flights nonstop in the A330. They would be gruelling down the back!

Even the 767 could do it easily. These aircrafts are capable of flying 12h30/13h.

The reason it could be done non-stop was that there were very few people on the flight and zero cargo. There would've been no one down the back, just some relief flight crew in the J class cabin.
