UA Mainline Returns to ELP

Fri Jun 08, 2018 12:46 am

Check out these pics the ELP Facebook page posted. I love that they’re celebrating this!

It seems that it was soon after the fatality where a worker was sucked into a CO 737 engine that the mainline service ended.

it's been a long time. Back in the day (late 1970's - early 1980's, Continental actually had a mini hub and a crew base in ELP (about 7-8 flights per bank in the rotunda).

The new schedule started today and a lot of mainline adds occurred.

Midland-Odessa (MAF) which is just up i20/i10 also gets mainline added as a RON.

Was supposed to be A319 but today flight (first) is upgraded to an A320 (but not so much due to inbound demand although outbound looks fairly strong tomorrow AM)

Continental got it's start in ELP. I think their first scheduled flight was ELP-PUB.

Looking at the handy route map on their facebook page, I can't help but wonder what might be next for ELP? Now that SLC is coming, I'm guessing SFO/OAK would be the top target (surprised that they have SAN, especially on two carriers, and not the Bay Area, but maybe the military connections explain that), and perhaps SEA, CLT, or JFK/EWR would also be high priority targets?

There was mainline all the way up to the CO merger. It used to be the PMCO735 that was sent there. They were deployed elsewhere and eventually retired.

I remember flying a 727 out of Chicago to El Paso on United in the 80s.

It was largely RJ, maybe one mainline flight, pre-merger.

The FL Panhandle is really getting some mainline lovin' lately. AA just upgraded one CLT-PNS flight to mainline as well and I think DFW-PNS/VPS sees mainline at least on a seasonal basis. And then obviously PNS-ATL is full blown mainline with DL.

Fares on IAH-AMA are darn high! I have colleague that fly it regularly and they pay anywhere from $700-900 within 7 days.

There's no mainline on PNS-IAH this summer. However, there will be mainline 1x on Saturdays only PNS-ORD.

CLT-PNS had mainline this winter, but is now all large RJ again, though with greater frequency so overall capacity is maintained.

DFW-PNS and DFW-VPS both have mainline and it appears to now be going year round. DL is all mainline to ATL and of course F9 and WN are all mainline at PNS.

I wonder if they'll bring back mainline on CLT-PNS? I can't imagine they can't justify the larger aircraft.

I think the problem is that AA doesn't have enough mainline planes during high summer season as they are still backfilling MD80 retirements. I believe that's part of why they launched PNS-PHL (yesterday!) which was to provide more capacity since they could only provide so much on PNS-CLT given the lack of mainline for upgauging and gate constraints that limit frequency additions at CLT.

Makes sense, they're probably using a lot of planes that would otherwise be used for CLT-XXX out of DFW to backfill the MD80s at the time.

There used to be a plaque in the rotunda memorializing this. I don't think its there anymore though; anyone know where it went?

I remember this too. UA pulled out of ELP in the late 80's and returned sometime in the 2000s with regional service to DEN.

Yes the 700 is an afternoon turn while the 900 is a RON.

Continental had a pilot base in El Paso until the early sixties. Then it was closed. It was re-opened in 1977, I believe. Then after deregulation it withered and only had flights to Houston.

Wouldn't ELP be a great geographic location for a hub? If they had the infrastructure...

No. You need local demand (not to mention especially high fares for a small O&D market). ELP has 1.5m enplaned passengers, with the highest connecting percentage (70%) you’d get to 4.5m enplaned passengers. It’d essentially be the size of SAT.

As for geography, not sure what you consider advantageous. PHX isn’t a great western hub by any means but at least it has the California market at its back door.

I remember taking a UA CR2 from ELP to LAX. Must have been 5-10 years ago.
