There’s only 2 destinations the same . The airport is pretty tiny can’t think that there is much room for many more a/c . I can’t see how or why easy would be driven out .

How is SEN going to cope with all this growth? It is basically doubling the number of PAX.

I used SEN last month for the first time and it is a tiny nice airport. However even flying on a half-empty FlyBe Embraer we had to wait a while at the very small area in the UK Border, and there were no e-Passport machines on sight. If that was a full Ryanair + some other flight at the same time, it would be very crowded!

Not really. Stobart Air operate the Flybe services and they always said the point was to show the routes were viable to attract other operators.

How? The franchise is operated by Stobarts themselves not Flybe.

Hoping this might mean Ryanair expand at some of the other smaller UK airports! Especially Cardiff! Well done to Southend for attracting Ryanair!

I'm well aware that Stobart operate planes. If the FlyBE routes fail then they sell or redeploy the planes. No skin off their noses. If the FlyBE routes fail then FlyBE loses revenue which it struggles to replace.

I’m surprised Stobart don’t keep sen for itself ? I’m sure they could do very well

I can think of 189 resons per flight why Stobart don't keep SEN to themselves. Their aim is 5m passengers by 2022 and they won't achieve that flying half empty ATRs and a few E195 routes.

There are European court judgements about port operators that are also boat operators refusing rivals - Stena Holyhead I believe. Easily applicable to airports and airlines, not worth it

Because there's no way to do that, Ryanair is free to use this airport and open up routes. No airline can claim an airport exclusively for itself, certainly not one that isn't slot controlled. As a matter of fact, Southend is the only London airport that isn't slot controlled. Any airline can strike down there like Ryanair just did and there's nothing anyone can do about it.

This is based on the assumption they get their UK AOC. If they didn't get it their UK operation would more than likely be in jeopardy.

For Flybe it'll be a franchise fee, though yes that is nice for Flybe it will hardly be the end of the world for them. Plus where do Stobarts redeploy the aircraft to? Dublin is probably the only real option and will Aer Lingus wants jets on it's regional service?

And we all know the chances of them not getting a UK AOC is slim to none.

Bilbao isnt entirely new to Ryanair, they've flown there in the past but moved their flights from Bilbao to Vitoria which is very close to Bilbao. Actually, eventhough they said Bilbao this flight could very well be going to Vitoria which Ryanair markets as Bilbao.

Ryanair flew briefly in Bilbao to MAD, BCN, and then after to SVQ and NRN. They aimed to gain some pax after Spanair ceased operations. However, due to the strong business core which is marketed on routes from/to Bilbao, I have the feeling they soon stopped flights there. They have an extensive network in Santander (including around 10 international routes, -some seasonal EDI, DUB, CRL, SXF, BGY, CIA, STN, RAK, BUD, NRN,...) so I guess this is 100% a way to make some noise in the UK, kick EZY off the place, and serve the endless possibilities of the London suburbs.

The listed 13 detinations acocunt for 45 weekly departures, not the "over 55" mentione in the press release. So I assume another 2-4 destinations are still in the pipeline.

They also said Belfast was going to be a three aircraft base, it didn't, southend will be the same, Max two planes and a third virtual one via other airports based planes. Good luck though, easy couldn't make it work completely so ryanair will probably chop and change routes like they always do.

seems that the FlyBE deal with Stobart, owner of Southend airport got very complicated with this report suggesting that their own Chief Executive was trying to drive the deal toward his own ends.

It seems like Stobart/Southend are trying to simplify their business.

I had no idea there was an expansion under way.

5 million PAX seems OK to make it more competitive in London. I bet a lot of people in London don't even know SEN exists or has regular flights.
