Emirates A380 to Boston.

Sun Jun 17, 2018 10:35 pm

Attention all BOS based spotters! Emirates will be flying a one-off A380 service to BOS on 23JUN18.

Is BOS A380 capable? or is the aircraft ised to cater to increased demand?

Yes BOS is A380 capable and has been for a while. This is the 2nd test of the EK version and BA have been running theirs to BOS 3-4 weekly for sometime.
3 gates E10-E11 and E12 are currently capable and it’s expected that the new E13-E16 gates coming on line in 2022 will have similar abilities although they will also be split to allow dual narrowbody connections.
EK have been toying with an upgrade since they cut the BOS market back to 1X daily.
This test I believe is to look at towing away from gate and store. Aircraft is on the ground for sometime and Massport can’t have a gate tied up for that long as they are currently very max’d out at Terminal E from a gate space capacity standpoint
That feeling when you sit at the end of a runway, brakes are released and the raw power takes over. Now that is a thing of beauty and it never gets old.

What does BA do with theirs? That one is at BOS for about six hours.

British uses gate E12 all day. Even the 380 sits at E12 all day. They can do so because the only flights impacted by the presence of the a380 are....other BA flights. If it's late, the next BA arrival will also be late.

Massports unofficial terminal E guideline seems to be that your operation should not effect anyone else's.

The tow that EK would require is really more of a 3 point turn, in a tight space. It can get complicated quickly

Aside from the technicalities of the 'three-point-turn,' it really isn't a settled issue that EK even NEEDS the A380 at Boston. It could easily be argued that they don't, erasing a potential worry for Massport. I guess we will know next Saturday; there will be enough sharp-eyed observers there to relay what goes on.

Does EK still run their departures out of Terminal C along with EI and TP? I assume they'd have to change back to departing from E if they were going to bring the A380 in on a regular basis...

It's also interesting that EK chose a Saturday for this test, neatly avoiding Friday+Sunday+Monday when BA brings theirs.

No, EK has been back over in terminal E for a while now. They built a brand new lounge that connects directly to the jetbridge for their premium passengers. I want to say this opened and they moved a little over a year ago.

They would hardly send it if it wasn't. :)

Don't forget EK are feeling the problems of a pilot shortage and are pushing pilots off the 777 to keep the A380 fleet flying. One more route on the A380 the better.

What other gate do they (British Airways) use for the 9p arrival? I assume the 1015 one comes into E12 and remains overnight before heading out in the morning?

On the other hand - someone made a chart outlining the airlines flights coming and going for gates at T5 at OHare. Is there one for TE in Boston?

if assumptions could fly, airliners.net would be the world's busiest airport

That is not correct re taking pilots from 777 to 380

I can see EK using an A380 for their service to Boston as that is a hub for B6 and they are the only partner airline for Emirates in the United States.

I'm sure that's what "emiratesdriver" has said. He's probably watching this thread.

That was my understanding too Arion.

Previously reported A380's were being stored, and pilots transferred to 777's. More recently 777 pilots and training staff were being transferred to A380's.

Perhaps EmiratesDriver has followed his own advice, and joined the exodus?

That's not how Emirates works. It picks equipment based on crew availability. Can anyone land A380 at FLL?

They cannot waste two weeks on crew retraining.

Two weeks to retrain.!?!?

Lol, it’s two months minimum and more like 3

Boys and girls - EK are not taking 777 pilots and putting them on the 380 or vice versa. In fact one of the ways EK saves money over western competitors is that you cannot bid equipment based on seniority - you get what you get - the pay is the same and they save on constant retraining costs a la Majors by not having to satisfy that reshuffle that the Majors et al have to go through when they throw out a systemwide bid.

Yesterday's one-off apparently went well. From what I can gather, EK wants to leave the plane at its gate for the eight hours its in Boston. Massport says, "Nyet...we need that gate multiple times between when you get in and when you're ready to leave."

So, I guess yesterday was an olive branch, and the A380 (special livery, too) was shoved off to the side.

Today I read that Etihad is offering its pilots to work for Emirates instead of losing their jobs outright. Granted, Etihad doesn't have many A380s at all, but those who crew them might jump to EK and soften whatever crew shortage exists over there.
