Well the passenger numbers I’m skeptical. That makes an average LF of 234/236 or 99% which seems very high.

It’s more likely they did 244 and multiplyed by capacity giving 57,584 and rounded. I guess they don’t want to reveal Load Factors. Makes sense I suppose....

Advance bookings six months out were reported to be very strong per Qantas so it's possible initial demand was that high. Whether or not they can sustain that year-round...

Definitely not 100%, it does seem like a figure of the maximum capacity during the reported period.

If it were a 100% load factor, they should definately increase their prices.

They said over 50,000 in the video. They are just reporting maximum capacity not true pax numbers. Not a chance every flight has been full in all classes.

Anyone know what the problem is with BA 788 G-ZBJE ? She has now been on the ground at LHR since 7th March 2018, arriving from Chennai (MAA).

It can't just be RR engine issues. Did she suffer some ramp rash?

As per publicly available data released by Bitre at bitre.gov.au, LF for the first two months of operations are the following:
April 2018: 90%
May 2018: 92%

It is just RR issues. BA had/still have 3 787s grounded. Engines issues is the reason.

So RR can't supply BA with 2 new engines five months later!

There are also 2 new 789's on the ground for two months, (G-ZBKK & G-ZBKN)

There's also a LA 788 on the ground since late last year.

It's probably cheaper to ground one or a couple for a longer period and keep other frames flying. The frames that keep on flying will have their faulty engines swapped 1 on 1 with the refurbished engines that came from the frames that are in long term storage. And the next refurbished engines will go to the next frame, and so on and on until all are fixed. The last refurbished engines can then go to the frames that were stored first.

RR just said that the situation will stay dynamic for another 12 to 18 months. So a 5 month grounding is not that long, the issues are very serious.

Since 44 Dreamliners were parked in June 2018, as a result of maintenance to their Trent 1000s, the fleet of aircraft on ground has declined. R-R says the figure "fluctuates quite a bit" as engines come in and out of shops, and is averaging in the "high 30s" this week.

What a disaster of an airline. How in the world can an airline of their size and magnitude have a spare parts shortage? Then again, this is AI so I guess anything is possible for them.

Absolute joke of an airline.

On another note would I be correct in thinking that NBO to JFK will be one of the longer B788 direct flights?

I believe it started due to how high AI felt new spares prices were and that airframe utilization was low enough that they had airframes out of service they could take spares from.

This is amazing work, and it was particularly interesting to see the breakdown of differently configured subfleets.

And one thing it makes clear: so much for all the angst, doom, and gloom about the capabilities of early-build 788s. When there are operators flying them on routes a solid 1000 nm longer than anything a 233 t 332 has flown regularly, it's clear that the flexibility for operators is more than sufficient. The thread helps show why the 788 has continued to attract follow-up orders even as the 789 delivers most of the volume.

It costs a fortune to lease a 787. It amazes me they just sit... and sit. There has to be a cheaper source of spare parts.

Is there a list of airlines and their 787 utilization? That would be fascinating!

It appears that "only" two 788s, ANK and ANL, are currently sidelined. ANO just returned to service after extended downtime. (This expresses no opinion about whether the in-service frames are utilized sufficiently…)

Markup on spare parts is how high? 2X?? 3X??? 4x????

After the 10 year point it makes sense, assuming the used aircraft marketplace is a fair determination of remaining value.

The real question is how many spare parts are needed? Air India's earliest 787s are early 2014 (and mid 20 line numbers, so some special parts), so some are about due for a heavy check. But they are not that old, and the composite airframe and electric architecture is supposed to make heavy checks easier and less frequent.

It wouldn't surprise me if Air India turned their first 7 or so aircraft into spare parts sometime in the next 5 to 7 years. But now is a little too early . . unless spare parts for 787s are really that pricey.

AI frames are leased (all sold/leased back); I expect the lessors would have an opinion about permanently disassembling them.

They might well become parts after a typical lease term ends, in the mid-2020s for the earliest frames. 14 of the 27 788s are overweight to varying degrees, and 11 of those 14 were built before full production standard was reached. If AI is still somehow in operation by 2027 or so, I could easily think that replacing at least those 11 frames with new-build would be the best option for AI, and that the lessors would get a better return from parting them out than trying to find a second lessee.
