FAQ

WHAT IS THIS REPORT?
This compares departures for sale THIS WEEK for the stated period versus what was for sale LAST WEEK...It does NOT compare to last year or now (UNLESS OTHERWISE STATED).

THE SCHEDULES SHOWN HERE CHANGE AFTER YOU POST???
-To improve is to change; to be perfect is to change often---Winston Churchill. This is data the carriers filed at the point in time it was captured. It's changed since then. You are just going to have to live with it.

HOW DO I READ IT?
XXX-YYY DEC 4>5 JAN 4>5 ; means that the listed airline changed the frequency between the two airports to add from 4 to 5 roundtrips in December and January. No other months were changed. I only list one direction, although it is possible the listed change is only one way. It is too difficult to average the two directions. I assume the change is roundtrip and that is most often the case.

WHERE ARE SEATS SHOWN?
They aren't. This only shows departures.

HOW ARE THE DAILY DEPARTURES CALCULATED?
This report uses total operations for the month listed, divided over the days in the month.

WHAT ARE THE FRACTIONAL FLIGHTS?
Flights that do not operate every day of the month create fractional service. In most cases flights are rounded, but in the case of international service or markets with low frequency, fractions are shown. For example, if a flight operates 4 times in April it will show 4/30=0.133=0.1. Also , a flight that only operates once per week may vary between 0.1 and 0.2 because a weekday may repeat either 4 or 5 times depending on the month.

WHAT ABOUT CARRIERS THAT DON'T PUBLISH A SCHEDULE 9 MONTHS IN ADVANCE?
Most airlines publish schedules 11 months in advance. This report covers the next 9 months. That avoids seeing schedules as they are loaded. Several LCCs load their schedules less than 9 months into the future. I remove the schedule adds if I see them and show a year over year (YOY) comparison if I notice them.

THOSE FLIGHTS AREN'T DELTA, THEY ARE SKYWEST
This report only shows the marketing code. It is too complicated to show all the operators.

THE FREQUENCIES MAY HAVE CHANGED AS YOU SHOW, BUT THE SEATS DIDNT CHANGE BECAUSE OF EQUIPMENT SWAPS
That is a natural weakness of a frequency based report, but it provides something to discuss below.

THIS LOOKS LIKE AN ERROR?
The carriers file the schedules. They do make mistakes. Most of the mistakes I have seen are either related to code shares not being marked as "duplicates" or carriers filing flights with invalid data such as equipment codes that are not standard. This causes flights to not appear.

CHARTERS?
Lately charters have been showing up in the database. I have no idea if that will continue.

I marked some of the ones I thought were interesting with an "*".

NOTE: The next two weekends I am going to be doing some computer upgrades that may result in delaying the report as much as a day.
Pretty quiet this week...

So the remaining OpenSkies fleet will still fly until end of life?

More surprising to me are UA’s reductions of Asia flights from ORD to 6X per week. Can’t remember when NRT was reduced to less than daily.

Is that actually an end to EWR-ORY or is it just a side effect of switching the AOC around (i.e. we'll see new service under a different IAG-owned airline code in a week or two)?

I thought it was kind of ambitious for them to think they can run 3x daily on LAS/SAN/SEA through SEP/OCT. Pretty much cut back down to regular levels.

pretty big increases here for DR for the winter. I doubt this is response to B6 entrance into SDQ. Probably just the general healthy demand to DR from NY/NJ area.

I’m pretty sure I remember that the PEK/PVG flights were less than daily for a couple months this year, so I’m not suprised. In fact, I thought that this was already the case for 2019.

Pretty sure those FEB China cuts are Chinese New Year day of week reductions--nothing to really read into long term.

Surprised they're all 738s to SDQ for the winter. Would have expected at least 1 widebody like in EWR-SJU.

Wow. Massive increases for UA. Daily from ORD-SJO and BZE is a surprise. Also, I don’t think I’ve ever seen UA operate 4 daily flights during November and December to GUA.

Seems like a big capacity cut for 3M. Is it just seasonal or other issues?

Maybe preventative to deter WN from opening MDW-SJO/BZE

Yes, this seems to be a big increase as IAH-MUC was regional last year and there were no flights in the late fall or winter in addtion to the added capacity to Central America.

I believe they stated that the Florida/Bahamas routes would be trimmed as the ATRs opened up longer routes. At this point, they are only taking enough new planes to replace the Saabs and given the ATRs have a third more seats, it makes sense to cut some frequency.

So far with the ATRs they are planning to open the BKG network at the end of August and add HSV-MCO in September. Twice daily BHB-BOS is coming next month as well, albeit with the Saabs. I imagine they need the drawdown to free up pilots for training, but I wouldn't be surprised to see some more new routes soon. Last I heard they have about half a dozen ATRs waiting to be delivered.

Wow. Massive increases for UA. Daily from ORD-SJO and BZE is a surprise. Also, I don’t think I’ve ever seen UA operate 4 daily flights during November and December to GUA.

I think we are seeing with SJU and SXM still impacted, airlines are looking to offer Central America and the DR as alternates.

Seems like a big capacity cut for 3M. Is it just seasonal or other issues?

Seems aimed heavily at MHH and ELH. Maybe they were getting

Maybe preventative to deter WN from opening MDW-SJO/BZE
a subsidy and it ended?
Interesting!

So far with the ATRs they are planning to open the BKG network at the end of August

Seems far too late in season to even try that.

Yeah the ATR entry has been a bit of a mess with the delays. HSV-MCO being pushed back from a May start to September is particularly bad. I'm guessing they wanted to take advantage of incentives before other carriers jumped on the routes. Many of the routes they expressed interest in (TPA-CHS/GSP, MCO-CHS/GSP/HSV/BKG, and JAX-ORF/MSY) have been already added - GSP-PIE/SFB, ORF-JAX on G4, GSP-MCO/TPA on F9.

Does seem like more than just a seasonal reduction to me.

UA IAH-MUC JAN 1.0>0.7 FEB 1.0>0.8
UA IAH-PTY JAN 3>4 FEB 2>3

Both of these are interesting. If this holds, it would be the first time since 2016 that IAH-MUC wasn't cancelled in the winter months. Same goes for EWR-FCO. The last time FCO was served in winter was from IAD in 2015.

I don't think UA has ever served PTY 4x daily from IAH. I wonder if this is some sort of defensive measure against CA who has started up fifth freedom flights 2x a week on this route?

Reverses a couple of last week's reductions back to the original frequency.

Typical G4 activity...I don’t even pay attention to their section on this list anymore...

Thats a lot of capacity on IAH-Central America.

It is a lot of capacity UA is adding from ORD, EWR, and IAH to Central America but it is long over due especially out of EWR and IAH. During the winter months the existing flights are jam packed the additional flights are needed to address a consistent rise in demand that we've seen over the past few years.

For years UA has in a way ignored a lot of leisure markets I'm happy we are finally becoming more flexible with our schedules and our aircraft by adding capacity when demand warrants and when the busy season is over take those same aircraft and move them into different markets. It is a strategy that has worked well for other airlines I think it can work for UA we can't continue to ignore or under-serve leisure markets like we've done in the past. Doing so leave an open door for competitors to come in and meet the demand.

I think the industry has suffocated LIR to death. It used to be a hot market, but now I never hear anybody talking about it any more. I think that was probably driven by distance and fuel price, but odd it is making a comeback as fuel goes up?

Maybe, but the market choices are odd as alternatives to Caribbean beach markets. LIR and PTY aren't really known for beaches, while GUA & SAL aren't really vacation markets at all. I get the vacation angle, but I don't think SXM and LIR draw the same crowd.
