Samaritans Purse Dc 8 72F
This past Sat me and my kids made our annual trip to the Dayton Air Show. This year there was a KC 135 a KC 10 and Orbis MD 10..... As we where taking in our luck at having some cool classic multi engine big birds, I spotted a DC 8.... Its in fantastic shape and they claim its one of only 2 operational DC 8 72F in the US. How could it be cost effective to operate this old girl with parts Ann so on that has to be in short supply. Also its cargo up front and 32 pax seats in the rear.... It's an organisation that regularly clears $100 million in surplus each year. Running a DC-8 barely makes a dent. I don't much care for the organisation and its goals but I'm glad they like the 8!

We where thrilled to see it. My boys had never seen one before and with the KC135 there also you could kinda see the beginning of the jet age in the US in one place... Orbis MD 10 with its generators and ac units was really good to see too. I think they need a few more DC 8s in there fleet.

I photographed it in Ukraine a couple of months ago, the jet gets about!!

Interestingly enough, they also own other aircraft including a C-47/DC-3 and a helicopter. They do a lot of good and are completely transparent.
DC6 to 777 and most things in between

So jelly that you saw the Orbis MD-10 AND the DC-8. Two aircraft that are my motivation for a project I have.

I think ATI? Not sure but the DC-8 came from ATI.

They were doing many many daily round trips from NC to Puerto Rico after the hurricane.

AS I recall the Press release at the time, it was available for almost nothing, required less than others to get it ready to fly again, and plenty of ex-UPS guys in the Greensboro NC area..pilots, mechanics, etc..all to keep her in tip-top shape.
Yes, last fall, if you tracked her she did almost daily rounds trips to San Juan, and several other islands hauling hundreds of generators, gasoline and diesel fuel for them, hundreds of thousands of bottles of water and MRE's.

I used to see the DHL 8s all the time....now it's 90% 767s and a hand full of 747, 757s. Throw in a 737 and odd a300.....the pax ramp is all a320 737 and th now.... Still love the DC 8 and even more the supers. On a side note the Orbis MD 10 is really well set up and super cool. The boys had a blast.

They don't fly it often, but its always available. That's where low capital cost is helpful.. Since iymts a combi, they can send essential personnel along with the freight.
