Austrian restructuring longhaul network, focus on US and China

Fri Jul 06, 2018 11:13 am

More flights to New York, Chicago, Beijing. Unprofitable connections will be dropped (Hong Kong, Colombo, Havana, Isfahan, Shiraz):

Interesting, especially since they've just added HKG back to their network. Maybe we will see a new destination (there have always been talks about South Africa or Mexico-City) instead and besides the additional flights to NYC, ORD and PEK.

I don't think new long-haul destinations will come any time soon. Keep in mind that there are a lot of new kids in VIE, which means that their short-haul is about to get hit pretty hard. They are doing the right thing, which is to focus where they can make money.

HKG is a relatively new route for them, I’m surprised they are cutting it so soon. For such an important market it must be really performing terribly for them to not give it more time to mature.

Am I incorrect in thinking that OS operated SZG-EWR with a 767 in the summer? This mustn’t have lasted too long.

Is it time for CX to consider flying HKG-VIE in the future?

You would think they would look at SFO?

The article mentions VIE-MIA is going to be a summer seasonal route instead of year-round. I would have thought that route would do better in the winter, but maybe the U.S. point of sale traffic is stronger and therefore it performs better in the summer? If I was going to go to Miami on vacation, I'd want to go in the winter.

Seems like OS does not have a clue if they are coming or going in the longhaul arena.

This year they also resumed service to Tokyo - 5x weekly.

OS have found some KOLs in Hong Kong to promto the route via FB and IG

What I see in their trip report is that half of the seat is empty

OS time schedule to hk is not favourable and fare price cannot be as low as SU

Summer is the peak season for the U.S.- Europe market. It seems that Europeans like the U.S. more during the summer. April and October are also very popular months.

The schedule of OS on HKG-VIE is a daylight flight. However, just because it is daylight it doesn't mean economics will be terrible. Remember that LH and LX are on redeye schedule already so it is a good alternative for LH group, plus KL AY SU SK(for now) and of course CX have daylight ex-HKG

Florida to Europe have twin peaks - both summer and deep winter months are peak seasons.

Would this cannibalize their flight to ZRH, which is currently flown with a 4-class B77W?

As for the network, what they desperately need are newer planes. Those 767s (all ordered when Niki Lauda ran Lauda Air) are long in the tooth, especially the 6-door frames. Even A343s seconded from other LH airlines would be an improvement. I agree that perhaps down the line, one will see the long-haul with Austrian branding, but operated by Eurowings Europe with A343s or A333s.

I understand that OS came close to announcing GRU at some point earlier on this decade, but then the Brazilian crisis hit. Zero chances of seeing them in the region now, I'd think.
