Re: Why doesn't United fly DEN-MIA?

For whatever reason, UA has always seemed a bit timid with Miami. It could be, though, that they flow that traffic over IAH or ORD.

Why doesn't United fly DEN-MIA?

Sun Jul 08, 2018 9:38 pm

Like I was looking at the routes on there route map, and I was shocked to see the don't serve Miami from Denver.

United does fly Miami-Denver, albeit this year it's seasonal. It's been on and off as a seasonal route.

It’s weird they don’t do DEN-MIA year round daily, but they do DEN-TPA multiple times daily.

UAL does fly DEN/FLL a couple of times a week so perhaps that accounts for the not-so-great service to/from DEN.

Look at southern Florida as a whole. UA is a very weak competitor.

Why is that weird?. There's no strong AA hub in TPA.

Don't get me wrong...I find it weird that UA is not stronger on DEN-MIA...just WHY bring TPA into this argument?

Doesn't UA have a strong interline/codeshare with Silver Airlines.

UA has 3x daily from DEN to MCO and that is where it primarily connects to Silver

I was confused by this topic title, because I have flown DEN-MIA on UA. As to why not year round, I think AA battered them when UA briefly tried their MIA hub, with the South American routes from Pan Am. UA has never had much presence in FL on a whole, and FLL seems to be where many airlines want to put their investment. I don't know this for sure, but I have always had the impression that MIA has much higher landing fees.

Easy now. Not everything is an attack on TPA. I very much appreciate your posts as you are very informative about TPA, which is my home airport since moving from ATL 5 years ago. But you get a bit too defensive sometimes - especially when comparisons to MIA and MCO are made.

The point I was making is that if it works for TPA with three carriers multiple times daily to DEN, you would think it could work for MIA which is a much larger market by itself.

Yes MIA has AA, but AA doesn’t have Denver’s United base. And last I checked Southwest has a very strong presence in TPA. If UA can make it work within F9 and WN, they should be able to make MIA work with AA. The fact they can’t is what is weird. Not TPA’s service is weird.

As someone who takes TPA-DEN at least once a year only non-stop, I am very glad I have the three options (really only two in my book because I won’t fly F9).

No worthy connections on the MIA end for UA, AA has that Locked however

It's the AA competition out of MIA (frequency) and the Spirit and Frontier competition out of FLL (price). Plus Southwest FLL-DEN. UA flies FLL-DEN. If they fly from MIA in some degree they're competing with themselves.

That is strange/surprising. I flew it on "TED" back in the summer of '06.

Used to be they ran mainline jets during the high season and nothing during the low season - the RJs did not have the range to fly DEN-MIA.

I think cost has everything to do with it. MIA is an expensive airport that's dominated by one airline, and FLL gives UA plenty of access to the MIA/FLL market.
