HSV Announcement - 7/10

Mon Jul 09, 2018 2:52 pm

Huntsville-Madison County Airport Authority sent out a press release this morning about a "Big Reveal" service announcement on Tuesday, 7/10 at 1030 local. Any ideas on who or what? New entrant into the high-priced HSV market or expanded service from one of the "big 3" already serving the airport? Surely this isn't about Silver finally starting MCO after the embarrassing delay earlier this spring.

Not sure which ULCCs they have but I think F9, G4, and NK are the most likely to enter that market.

They dont have any of the ULCCs. My vote is going to G4 with some Florida routes.

That'd be a return for Allegiant. Perhaps better luck this time around, if in fact, it is them.

NK, they did the same thing the last time with AVL and GSO. Probably HSV-TPA, MCO, FLL. However, I'd be upset if they did because that means that it's almost a 10% chance they do BNA.

With the F9 and NK foray into smaller airports and a F9 schedule extension due, I could see F9 coming into HSV.

G4 sounds about right. I don't think NK would be it, and even if it did I don't think it would keep them out of BNA. There is simply no where to put another airline in Nashville, and wont be for a couple of years.

My thoughts exactly! HSV needs some attention from the ULCC.

I could also see VC as they recently have announced BTR JAN MOB.

Been there, done that. :!:

G4 tried HSV-LAS starting September 21st 2007 and dropped the route on December 11th. Orlando flights began in November 2007 and service to FLL started on December 11th. G4 exited both markets on May 31st 2008.

Business travelers largely stuck with the legacy carriers, and leisure travelers were unnerved by several well-publicized incidents where passengers were left at the airport such as this one:

https://consumerist.com/2008/03/16/pass ... index.html

If I were a betting man, I would not know what to bet on. Normally it would be F9 to DEN, but UA just beefed up HSV-DEN so I would not expect a new entrant to fly that route.

I'd go with 50-50 chances of either Spirit with no guess as to destination, or G4 returning with service to Orlando. Our former Airtran service to Orlando did okay, so maybe G4 would give that another shot.

Would be nice to have another carrier fly mainline aircraft into HSV, as AA dropped their mainline service here a few years back and HSV hasn't seen UA mainline in eons. (In fact pre-merger UA exited the HSV market at some point.) DL owns much of the HSV market these days, and almost everything is mainline or a larger CRJ. (Except DL's occasional flight to DTW which is still a 50 seater.)

edit: given the hoopla, I don't see it being a regional carrier such as VC. Pretty sure it will be one of the ULCCs, with an outside chance of a new major route such as HSV - NYC.

I visit Tennessee quite a bit and usually fly into BNA (from IAD) as they are almost always cheaper than HSV which is actually closer to where I go right across the Alabama border. Booking a trip last week and just by chance happened to check similar direct flights into HSV. Lo and behold they were a $100 cheaper per ticket than Nashville. Was pretty surprised as the last time that happened was many years ago when Air Tran flew there from BWI.

I think this airport is traditionally one of the most expensive to fly in and out of in the US.

Spirit has been on a kick with similar markets recently considering they just announced GSO and AVL. I'm going to bet on them.

I'll go with F9 MCO and LAS to start (4x weekly/3x weekly), wildcard of DEN (this is the winter season though or maybe RDU if they are committed to building it up)

I feel like if it's F9, they'll announce MCO for sure, and either DEN or LAS in addition. HSV has very high fares and a decent-sized catchment area so I wouldn't be surprised if F9 tries to bring down fares there a little bit. Plus, they announced BMI, GSP, and ALB on a Tuesday, so there's that as well.
Long live the Boeing 757!

How many times in recent years has G4 re-entered a market it dropped? Not many, right?

My money is on NK to Florida.

Normally I would say G4 and F9, but given NK's recent announcements I would go with them.

Sun Country announced STL and MSN on a Tuesday. Not really sure I see this as a Sun Country market but I also don't really know what they are going for either.

I don’t feel it’ll be SY. They do odd routings for college charters but they do that through leashes destinations. And HSV is not a leisure destination. Not like STS is.

I'd put my money on F9 to DEN, MCO, and maybe LAS. They are due for a schedule extension at this point. G4 hasn't been expanding much due to the MD retirements. NK I could see maybe to MCO and FLL, but given the timing I think F9 is more likely.

I wasn't looking at it as HSV being the leisure destination. It would be flying TO a leisure destination from HSV, just like G4/NK/F9 would treat it. Again, I am not sure I see it as Sun Country either but I wouldn't have guessed MSN being one of their first adds in their new format either.

But those cities got TPA and RSW which are leisure, however I do agree that I doubt its SY, I think they have bigger markets they'll look at first. However, if they are specifically trying to avoid G4, maybe HSV is something that they look at.

Quick jump on Silver airways' proposed Orlando service , possibly by Via Air which has added several southern tier cities to SFB?

LFT also has a new airline announcement tomorrow. I figure these will be the same airlines so no need for another thread.

A new airline will be announcing services to and from Lafayette Regional Airport on Tuesday.

A press conference will be held at 10 a.m. to introduce new low-fare flight options to and from the Hub City.

I think that the upcoming announcement tomorrow might be NK starting service out of HSV since NK has recently added service to other former AirTran destinations, including AVL, CMH, PIT, and RIC.

Oddly enough, I just realized that both Huntsville and Lafayette go by the nickname Hub City (even though Rocket City is more commonly used for Huntsville).

Now that I think about it, Via Air would make a lot of sense given their aforementioned recent expansion from Orlando to several southern cities. Is it a low fare carrier?

Haha, I didn’t realize that! Well that changes things a bit. ViaAir definitely seems like a possibility as LFT seems like a place they would go. Only thing that argues against that is LFT is fairly close to BTR which they will be starting in September.

Both are showing DEN and MCO in 'secondary booking engine'.

HSV with a lot more connections through DEN.

LFT limited to DEN, MCO with only connections to LAS, SEA, SLC it looks like.

Their website doesn't seem to show a/c type, but you do see a tail of an ERJ. I know the routes out of Austin are E145's. They may operate smaller ERJ's as well.

So they use E145 out of Austin. Don't charge for carryons provide peanuts/chips and beverages. No wifi. Just basic service.

Service starts 10/5 for DEN and 10/21 for MCO but they haven't extended the schedule yet, meaning there's only 3-5 weeks of bookable flights out there, you'd think they'd extend then announce....
