DEN Great Hall renovation begins

Tue Jul 10, 2018 7:17 am

The $650 million project to renovate DEN's terminal is underway. Ferrovial is leading the project. Concessions in the terminal are closing ahead of construction that's slated to start on Wednesday.

The Denver Post has a really good outline of each of the four phases of the project, which is expected to take three years to finish. Phase one involves building new ticket counters in the middle section of the top level of the building. The TSA checkpoint is scheduled to move to the top level fall 2020.

Here's a video showing some of the changes:

I was really skeptical of the idea when it was first floated around, but the more I look at it, the more I like it and think it makes sense.

It really is attractive, but I’m still concerned about the potential bottleneck at security.

Maybe this project will actually fix all the broken things around the terminal. It is so bad that there is even an Instagram dedicated to all of the broken escalators at the airport. instagram.com/broken_escalators_of_den/

DEN closed the only 24 hour restaurant, so now there is nothing open in the main terminal after 9PM. No vending machines available either. With as many redeyes and late arrivals as DEN has, that is asking for trouble.

I don't understand why they advertise having dozens of active security screenings, when the reality at every airport is they shut half of them and we end up with a half hour wait. Pointless expenses.

Amazingly, this is only one of a half of dozen major projects. It's the most visible project, but probably not the one that will make the biggest difference. Almost as large is the effort to finish building out A,B,C, which will result in 39 new gates, and all three concourses being fully "telescoped" out. As part of that, there are also additional international gate nodes (which connect gates on A to customs and immigration over the bridge). There is also the airport city development around the airport itself.

Not as important, but still nice for travelers will be the new Plaza Premium lounge (first in the US) and a new Centurian lounge, as well as an overhaul of retail space on C concourse.

It's going to be a construction zone for a few years, but what the city is getting for the money should be impressive.

Where is the new Plaza Premium Lounge going? I know the AMEX one is going on "C".
Landing on every Continent almost on an annual basis!

The lounge is going into A. I have to admit, this confuses me a bit, as I would have suspected that Plaza Premium would want C (since WN as no lounges) while AMEX would prefer the international on A.

Yes, the concourse expansions are just as significant.

Are they overhauling the concessions in A and B too? They really need to. DEN is a great airport but those concourses are starting to make it all look pretty dated.

I know they're putting a Smashburger in B in addition to the one in C, but the plaza areas in the middle of the concourses could use a facelift.
