any source will be great

I mentioned it was a RUMOUR; the info currently came from an internal (normally reliable) source but it's not confirmed so wait for the official announcement. No webpage available.

The last rumour came from this source was about the Starlux order of A350; and we saw the result.

Another MoU.

I like how the press releases for these undisclosed MoUs are becoming more and more sober. For this one they didn't even do a fancy thumbnail to accompany the very simple message and the standard A320neo sales talk segment. Also no mention of a future engine selection anymore.

Anyway, another strong show for Airbus. And just like Boeing they also still haven't announced some of the most prominent expected orders. So more to come today? Not all orders have to be announced at an air show of course.

According to LeFigaro.fr, Air Asia to order 30 more A330neo and to firm the previously ordered 66 A330neo.

As planesmart has explained many times the launch orders are not very firm until a certain point in the process. The customers can can walk away with almost no penalties.

Great news. Was it you who was telling me I might be waiting a while for this?

It was the same with EK and the 787. They said they would put off placing the order for a little while then about a week later at the Dubai airshow, they ordered it.

This explains why they were seriously thinking of canceling the entire A330neo order, there would be no penalties, as it wasn't even an order to begin with.

Question is, will Indigo order their rumored 50 A330neos as well in this show?

Yes, I suspect we’ll see the A350 order quietly removed from the books. I’m actually surprised it wasn’t mentioned in the press release.

Once the airshow euphoria has died down, maybe it will be time to speculate on how many of the 100 AirAsia X orders will actually be delivered. A doubling and full replacement of the current A330 fleet would amount to ~50 aircraft. Given the past deferrals and conversions from the A330ceo orders, it is not too hard to imagine that the fleet will fall short of a 100. Still, "only" 50 won't be so bad.

It was legally enough of an order for Airbus to list it as such in their order book.

The order of the show right there. Only to secure A330 neo production which is ramping down at present.

Don't forget Thai AirAsia X will be allocated some planes. Who knows, they may set up more long haul affiliates over time and Indonesia AirAsia X might *actually* start operating long haul flights again. Would be interesting to see the planned delivery schedule of the 100.

The term used by Airbus is "reconfirmed", it was already firm, but there have been new negotiations about the price and other terms of this already firm order.

Anyway, early reports on possible orders for the show and Tony's tweets last week also suggested an AirAsia order for another 100 A321neo. I wonder what happened to that "order".

The Air Asia X order was an expensive one for Airbus. Much more Money then previously intended had to be spent to defend Boeings killer attitude towards the A330NEO.

And the winner is: Toni
A little winner : the A330NEO Program

On the looser side:
The financials for Airbus and the A330Neo program Business case but also and the 797 Business case and probably also the 787 program due to lower average picing now.

If you are ordering 34 more, you are getting a discount on the first 66. There is no way Airbus could have avoided it. Reading between the lines, Airbus appears to have been very conservative with the original performance predictions which let Boeing in with a chance. The actual flight test data showed Air Asia what they wanted to see but they were not going to let Airbus off the hook without a further improvement of terms. This is just the start of momentum for the a330neo... The next few months will show that.

I suspect between the original and Thai and Indonesia Air Asia X they can take them all.

Getting financing might be another matter.

Even with this order the 330neo still remains a question mark - until someone orders it for an 8 across config.

(I just can't see a full service carrier going 9 across in a 330, the 17.2" in a 787 is about the bottom limit)

It’s pretty rare for any serious business to be done on the Friday (which is “Enthusiasts Day”). That said, I believe SQ’s original A350XWB order was announced on the Friday.

The 1st picture is only the orders on the show. The 2nd are the orders so far this year. The H1 order is included in the 2nd picture. Airbus only booked 12 order this year that were not (also) at the show.

These are also the gross numbers, the net order total is still lower then these numbers as they don't include this years cancellations.

Me too, I was holding my breath for both Airbus and AirAsia. Discussion hasn't been easy between TF and Airbus sales team. Glad they reached an agreement. Now where is the other 100 A321neo and whatever will happen to the 10 A350? The latter is most probably canceled for extra the 34 A330neo.

Boeing will also wrap the show up today.

That doesn't mean that there can't be more orders if there are still ongoing order negotiations that haven't yet resulted into a deal. But as for the planned announcements it's over for this year.

Sure you're not confusing it with the A380? The A330neo program cost airbus $2 billion to develop which means they broken even on the very first sale and every single frame they have sold so far generated a profit. In what world is the business case anything but a success?

You are spot on. If you increase an order, you most certainly do re-negotiate the existing component.

Since 2015/16, both A & B have been far more sophisticated with pricing, especially the application of discounts.

Previously, a discount on say 50 aircraft was applied consistently across the entire purchase, unless negotiated in different tranches with discrete time intervals between each. And if there was a deferral or cancellation, the discount was often unaffected. If the customer model-hopped, it was seen as a right that the discount hopped too.

Now, volume discounts are back end loaded. So order 50, and while yes a discount applies from the first delivery, it gets progressively bigger, until back end deliveries may involve only notional payments (for contract binding purposes).

Cancel, defer or model hop, and usually the discount expires, though of course if you replace it with another even larger volume purchase of a different model............

Both pre and post examples ignore inflation impact, which is built into orders.

Original performance projections were conservative, especially as Airbus had NEO performance enhancements banked and ready to go, but not all matched by equivalent A350 enhancements.

Either wait for A350 developments, announced from time to time, or improve the NEO value proposition at the expense of the A350 family (especially A359).

Compromise. Announce some NEO enhancements for deferred availability, softening the impact on the A350, providing time for comparable A350 enhancements to preserve pricing and capability differences.

Ok 2 sides of the Story:
1) a win for the A330NEO, because it was reconfirmed and the NEO is now coming. Goo for Airbus and bad for the 797 Program as it hurts the 797 Business case 'from above'
2) at the same time a loss in the financials for the A330NEO due to Boeings activities to lure the customer over. That was expensive for Airbus and probably not in the plan when they signed the original contract some years ago.

The financials for Airbus and the A330Neo program Business case

 Whaaa?
Sure you're not confusing it with the A380? The A330neo program cost airbus $2 billion to develop which means they broken even on the very first sale and every single frame they have sold so far generated a profit. In what world is the business case anything but a success?

We don’t know if every frame they have sold if profitable and that they broke even with the first order (I doubt they did). That all depends on the profit margin Airbus got in the sales, not just the total cost of the program. Early customers still got launch discounts (being a derivative doesn’t change that) and remember the plane is late, meaning airlines are getting some form of compensation.

Sat & Sun are “Public Days”. It’s a subtle difference.

For aviation people Friday is relaxing day, and meeting other exhibitors, drinking bubbly, and relaxing.... watchng fly-bys and so on...

weekend is public day, i.e. oppossums day or 'hunter-and-gatherer' day..... thats when you get rid of old pens, and other gimmicks and stuff thatyou won't need any more... most senior staff have disappeared then also...

From a pure number standpoint yes, I rather wonder that there have been orders at all.
I can only assume the Situation:

Boeing tried to kill the A330NEO to 'make room' for the 797 on the upper range luring over the most important customer - this with actremely agressive offers for the 787-10. Not sure if this will e the standard in the future. Airbus defended it by (on furce) reducing the pricing as well to defend it, but at the same time knowing that they hurt the 797 Business case.

At the same time with the A350 Airbus didn't want to have too much Discounts there, as the plane ist still more expensive t build due to the ongoing rampup and A350 cost redcution still has to be achieved - they are some years behind Boeing.

The A350 Needs at least 2-3 more years cost optimization and a better Slot availability before Airbus can make more attractive offers.

It will be interesting to follow if Boeing now has given up on the NEO eraser Mission, or if the try to continue it this way.
