DFW Foreign Carrier Estimated May 2018 Load Factors

Fri Jul 13, 2018 7:17 pm

Here are the estimated load factors for the foreign carriers at DFW for May 2018. First month of 787-9s for Japan Airlines, and I've calculated using the 195 seat variant rather than the 203 seater. Icelandair had its first flight and WOW Air started with four flights. I've calculated Icelandair with 183 seats and WOW Air with 345 seats on their A330s. If these counts are off, please let me know.

On another topic, if anyone is interested, a little newsletter I do 2x monthly - https://bit.ly/2miOotn

Strong departing load factors on the first few WOW Air and Icelandair flights! Friends have reported to me that their flights were virtually full. I will be on WOW in September and will report back.

Interjet seems to be improving and off of life support.

All others seem to be doing well as usual, with the exception of Qatar that seems to be doing a little less positively on their LF than usual. Not horrible, but not well compared to how they used to do.

Still haven't heard if EK has decided to bring their 380's back to DFW yet?

No, no word at this point.

I can't wait to try Icelandair next year. New airline, route, airport, etc for us.

I'll be interested to see their June/July/August numbers (Summer).

Qatar seem a little low even after Etihad’s departure.

Wonder if LH/BA gained those pax’s.

I flew FI from KEF to DFW on June 3. Flight was less than half full, but they said that the return to KEF would be a full flight. I am taking WW tonight from DFW to KEF and am curious to see how full that one is.

I never really understood why LH, being the one with the one with best LF, doesn't upgauge DFW to either a A346 or B744 for that matter.
Having some of the passengers that Etihad had, plus a bigger J class could mean a better profit margin.

Their LF is likely good because they chose the right plane for the job. A larger aircraft has higher operational cost etc. and it doesn't mean that LH will manage to retain the same LF and more importantly, yields.

LH does schedule the A346 periodically, depending on the season, etc.

I'd kill to see a 744/748 though. However, that is just a pipe dream of mine.

I’d very surprised if that were the case considering DFW is one of the cities losing EK service in the spring and dropping to 6x weekly. Other cities losing service in the US are MIA, MCO, ORD, BOS and IAD.

Ek dropping service in the spring 2019 for runway upgrades. I think Kuwait loses 3 of its dailies in that period. All routes are hit for both EK and FlyD

Follow-up: the vast majority of my WW flight was filled to the brim, and about half of the WOW Premium seats were taken. Interestingly, a ton of pax were self-connects from Mexico en-route to Europe.

Correct, it’s for runway upgrades. However, only certain cities were targeted for service reductions. I’m sure EK ran the numbers and picked the cities with the lower loads. Hence I’d be surprised if DFW was upgauged to an A380 when it was one of the cities reduced.

Fair points; havent seen anything specific on this. Just social media chatter.

But it is plausible. Both BA and LH have limited connectivity to Indian cities.

From the info on the single Icelandair flight it looks quite obvious that Icelandair attracts US point of sale to Europe more than the other direction.

You are talking about a temporary loss of one flight per week. If anything,a change to the 380 would make more sense and try and shift pax to the rest of the week's schedule. I doubt runway construction would not affect the aircraft size in this case.

Yes, it is temporary. But as I mentioned earlier EK only reduced certain US cities, not all of them. While I could very well be wrong, that doesn't make it appear as though DFW needs more capacity when they're only losing 1 flight per week. That one flight will push passengers to the other six 77W flights and helping to improve LF's on them. But we shall see if EK agrees or if they do indeed upgauge to an A380.

On a side note this could also help QR attract more traffic away from EK since they will be maintaining a daily schedule.

Guess you are right. I tried a dummy booking for a trip during the construction with no Tuesday service. Shows 77W. My bad.

Yes, they began flying the A380 in October 2014 and downgauged back to the 777W in February 2016.

I cannot recall LH ever scheduling the A346 into DFW. Perhaps I've missed a one-off here and there, but its been A330/A340 for the past nearly 20 years. What am I missing?

I know the 346 is coming up in 2019 though.

They did; they down gauged after QR/EY flights. With EY gone and QR adding flying time because of their 'blockade', perhaps EK is seeing stronger outlook.

Not a good month for QF, load factors in the 60s both ways when taking into account the seat blocking for the westbound route..

Sorry, I meant A343 (That's what I was thinking in my head), but for some reason, wrote 346. My mistake. Good catch!
