Why Doesn’t the US Have an Intl. Aviation Trade/Airshow?

Wed Jul 18, 2018 2:59 pm

Exactly as the title states, why doesn’t the United States play host to a large international tradeshow and airshow such as Farnborough, Paris, Singapore, Dubai, etc.? We obviously have Oshkosh & Sun ‘n’ Fun, which are great, but are mostly geared towards GA aircraft. None of the airlines show up, Boeing/Airbus rarely show up, and if they do, it’s usually just in terms of a flyover and one day static display.

With the global airliner market predicted to continue soaring for the next 20 years, would this be a feasible event?

I would assume history has a lot to do with it. For a long time the largest manufacturers were Boeing & Douglas. If US carriers wanted to see the product they just flew to Seattle or Long Beach and in many cases were involved in developing the aircraft. Whereas other carriers needed to be "sold" the product. Nowadays it's more of a tourist/marketing/investor show.

A while ago, some group was wanting to set one up in the Miami area. I guess it fell through. I wouldnt want to go to an air show anyway in Miami, wayyyyy too humid.
When wasn't America great?

So many people from so many countries wouldn’t be able to visit plus the US is too far away from the main population centres of the planet , too remote

The Trade Exposition part withered years ago.

AirSpace America 88 was an attempt to create a Paris or Farnborough type air show at San Diego's Brown Field.

A majority of the general public who attend the air shows are local.

History is a major part of it. The main air shows (Paris and Farnborough) were established in part to show case the domestic aviation industry which remember at the time were heavily nationalized. The US never had a nationally owned airline or aircraft manufacturer, so there was never a strong governmental push to showcase the industry with an air show. Newer shows like the Singapore Air Show or Dubai Air Show are all heavily backed and pushed by local government as they want to be regional powerhouses in the industry. Paris and Farnborough no longer have the government support and backing that they once had, but at this point they are both so established that it isn’t needed.

You are joking, correct? And if you were serious, which I hope you aren't, there is enough of the domestic population to have good attendance numbers.
