This is still less offensive than a couple copulating in the back row.

Exactly. Someone is looking for a pay day

As for the person upthread who thinks masturbating in a confined public place is acceptable, I have no words.

Why, do you think my wife, sister, and daughter have never heard of masturbation?! They’ve seen worse things. I’m sure they’d say, ‘whatever.’

It is bloody well offensive.
I can imagine that the crew tried to defuse an awkward situation with a joke and that misfired.
It seems nevertheless that the crew did take the complaint serious, the masturbating passenger was met by police on arrival.

It's just frowned upon.

They'd say, 'whatever', to some guy cranking one out in the seat next to them? Somehow, I doubt that.
I am quite surprised by the amount of casual acceptance of this guys behavior. There are plenty of things that can be classed as fake outrage...but this isn't one of them. FA's may see this all the time, but passengers don't. Get a clue, United.

Just think of United as the 'Florida Man' of airlines...

is it possible that the man was *masturbating in his sleep?* Yes it can and does happen, probably every one here has had an erotic dream and woke up to find his/her hand attached to that person's joy bits.
Is it possible that the woman made the complaint in a way that said, "Eww the guy I think he is playing with himself in his sleep?"
And then the F/A made a joke b/c F/As have seen it all, similarly to when someone is sleeping and the snoring is enough to rattle the entire plane or someone talking in his or her sleep or someone leans head on neighbor in his sleep. All unintentional.
I don't know if that is the case and I suspect it wasn't because the guy was met with police at the gate, but perhaps the F/As thought *at first* it was one of those embarrassing unintentional sleep things.
