Plane Lands on Lake Shore Drive in Chicago

Fri Jul 27, 2018 9:18 pm

Apparently an Aircoupe suffered engine failure flying south along the lake shore near Soldier's Field and was forced to land on southbound Lake Shore Drive and having to fly under a pedestrian bridge to do so. No injuries nor damage to aircraft or cars.

I just saw the story on WLS ch 7. It's truly astounding that there were no cars involved and the pilot and possible passenger (reporters trying to find out) are safe! The discussion now is how to get that plane safely off the busy road with 3/4 southbound lanes blocked during rush hour on Friday.

Say it ain't so!? Mayor Daley personally ensured everybody that no such thing would happen after a thorough bulldozing to Meigs Field's runway.

On a more serious note, I'm glad nobody was injured. I think that this incident might have been avoided if Meigs was still there.

I like the screen cap in that article for the video. "Plane lands on LSD"

“The police don’t expect any criminal charges to be filed” Really?
All the crimes in Chicago must be solved if the question of whether or not to press charges came up at all. I’ve read a number of articles about emergency landings in populated areas and the possibility of charges being filed has never been mentioned.

That's a Ercoupe, not an Aircoupe.

Given how busy lake shore drive usually is, the real question is how they found enough clear tarmac to land the plane without running into a car.

I must have that aircraft now. Amazing to fly under a bridge and park, without hitting a car or loss of life or any damage whatsoever. Who is this guy!

That's a Ercoupe, not an Aircoupe.

Actually, that depends on when it was made and who built it. The early ones built by ERCO were Ercoupes. In 1955 Forney took over production and marketed them as Aircoupes.

Point taken, thank you. Article calls it a 1946-build Ercoupe.

Already addressed in previous response...and the article does state it is an Ercoupe. I stand my ground.
