FAQ

AS OF JULY 2018 THERE ARE CHANGES TO THE FORMAT OF THIS REPORT...SEE BELOW

WHAT IS THIS REPORT?
This compares departures for sale THIS WEEK for the stated period versus what was for sale LAST WEEK...prior year departures are now shown in brackets e.g. [0].

THE SCHEDULES SHOWN HERE CHANGE AFTER YOU POST???
-To improve is to change; to be perfect is to change often---Winston Churchill. This is data the carriers filed at the point in time it was captured. It's changed since then. You are just going to have to live with it.

HOW DO I READ IT?
XXX-YYY DEC 4>5[4] JAN 4>5[4]
XXX Departure IATA code, YYY Arrival IATA code, Month, Average Departures/Day over the month for sale as of last week, Average Departures/Day over the month for sale as of this week, in brackets is the number of Average Departures/Day over the month that were scheduled one year earlier. So, it means that the listed airline changed the frequency between the two airports to add from 4 to 5 roundtrips in December and January. It also means that there were 4 roundtrips the prior year in each month. No other months were changed. I average two directions.

WHERE ARE SEATS SHOWN?
They aren't. This only shows departures.

HOW ARE THE DAILY DEPARTURES CALCULATED?
This report uses total operations for the month listed, divided over the days in the month. The following criteria are used to show a change: 1) The change must be at least 6 roundtrips per month with no exceptions, 2) changes of at least 6/week are always shown, 3) routes that are added or dropped are shown subject to the change minimum, and 4) in all other cases routes must change by 20% to be shown. For example, if a route changed from 21/week to 18/week it would not be shown because the change is -14.3%. This is done to filter minor changes that occur in large numbers.

WHAT ARE THE FRACTIONAL FLIGHTS?
Flights that do not operate every day of the month create fractional service. If the route has more than 2 daily flights, departures are rounded, but in cases of less than 2 departures per day a fraction is shown. For example, if a flight operates 4 times in April it will show 4/30=0.133=0.1. Also , a flight that only operates once per week may vary between 0.1 and 0.2 because a weekday may repeat either 4 or 5 times depending on the month.

WHAT ABOUT CARRIERS THAT DON'T PUBLISH A SCHEDULE 9 MONTHS IN ADVANCE?
Most airlines publish schedules 11 months in advance. This report covers the next 9 months. That avoids seeing most schedules as they are loaded. Several LCCs load their schedules less than 9 months into the future.

THOSE FLIGHTS AREN'T DELTA, THEY ARE SKYWEST
This report only shows the marketing code. It is too complicated to show all the operators.

THE FREQUENCIES MAY HAVE CHANGED AS YOU SHOW, BUT THE SEATS DIDNT CHANGE BECAUSE OF EQUIPMENT SWAPS
That is a natural weakness of a frequency based report, but it provides something to discuss below.

THIS LOOKS LIKE AN ERROR?
The carriers file the schedules. They do make mistakes. Most of the mistakes I have seen are either related to code shares not being marked as "duplicates" or carriers filing flights with invalid data such as equipment codes that are not standard or overlapping schedule periods that see the same flight number in two places at once. These cause flights to not appear.

CHARTERS?
Lately charters have been showing up in the database. I have no idea if that will continue.

I marked some of the ones I thought were interesting with an "*".

**************************************************************************
PLEASE NOTE THIS IS THE FIRST WEEK OF THE NEW FORMAT. Major changes are :
a) inclusion of prior year departures in [3]
b) more liberal inclusion of flights operating fewer times per week
Please consult FAQ with questions
Some routes are appearing separately in two directions, will look into that

Thanks enilria,

Ha, I was expecting more cuts this week after the earnings reports!

Interesting that Delta is moving OAK capacity from LAX to SLC. Maybe having both WN/NK on there is too much.

You're welcome

OAK extends its recent losing streak. I guess too much too fast. Still surprising to see DL back off anything in LAX. They moved TUL and OAK capacity to SLC. Seems odd.

Yeah, I do wonder where the capacity cuts are. Maybe already baked in? September is a month away.

Surprised DL is dropping LAX-OAK. They seemed to be building it up over the years with large RJ's and then some 717's.

And looks like UA is starting SFO-MUC early. Wonder if ZRH will follow

Thank you as always for the report.

The AC YYZ-MSY looks like possibly a filing error. Last week reported it going 2 daily in November through April and that still looks to be the case based on spot checks.

About time UA started IAD-MIA. That route should be successful you would think judging by the lack of IAD-Florida competition

And FYI, it appears IAD-MIA will be on an A319

Volaris adds SMF-BJX 2x/wk beginning Nov 20, 2018. Service is in addition to existing SMF-GDL flights 6x/wk.

There will be more regional drops by DL from DTW, there are usually a couple a year. The pace will pick up when the 200’s are facing their last breaths.

Is OO committed to eliminating the type? They have A LOT of at risk using CRJ-200s.

This is driven by rounding. The change made the filter, but rounds to nothing. Another thing to look into fixing.

Ouch! another hit for MHT. Looks like DL is taking a 6-week vacation rather than downsizing aircraft.
With recent cuts, there is no way MHT can avoid another significant year over year passenger drop unless somebody adds something to somewhere. Losing connectivity to two of the worlds largest hubs, even for just six weeks is a big blow.

AA recently dropped it despite no competition. We’ll see if it works with the hub on the other end.

Although I consider MHT to be my ‘home’ airport, I have evolved to the point where using BOS is fine. My home sits literally on the Massachusetts state line and the continued drawdown at MHT means that we’re at risk should a flight there be cancelled.

If I understand correctly, the capacity cuts that DL announced are cuts to the growth that had been projected, not an actual net reduction over the current capacity. My understanding is that this means we will see some new routes that were in the works not launch, that we will see some cuts to existing routes, but that we will also see new capacity coming online. The bottom line is it least from the way I read it, I am not expecting to see many notable new cuts.

Hard to say. It is true that in the past when cuts were announced there was a significant reduction in the following loads. I have to wonder how serious they were about flying that extra 1% if it was never loaded for sale in the first place. I agree it is more likely it has not been removed yet. DL is loading new routes for Summer 2019. New flying for Fall should have been loaded long before this cut was announced.

Regarding the LAX-OAK cut, I find it strange that DL has become to weak between LA and the Bay - eliminating the shuttle to SFO and cutting frequency and now cutting OAK. It’s also a major bummer for me because OAK offered an excellent alternative to SFO - balancing out schedule and price. Nothing against SFO but I find OAK so much easier to navigate and much faster to get through.

Sad to see MHT lose another big flight to ATL. There is hardly anything left there now with respect to any mainline service from US3 with the exception of AA to PHL.

That is a shame. Has far has the connection/part SLC makes better routing. But LAX OAK since WN chased UA and AS out has it all to themselves and look to again. UGGG ive been pretty pro delta with there working to make a presence in the North South market. I really hope this isn't a bigger signal change.

Fares were cheaper LAX OAK vs SFO for me most times. I still used SFO it had more flight options. AA has fewer and smaller planes.

I will say this, the intra cali market is pretty brutal. I don't think any of the legacies could make money at the fares we are seeing. I took a look at Q1 numbers, DL's numbers on LAX-SFO/OAK are pretty similar, but they can't really drop LAX-SFO, so LAX-OAK goes.

As always, my favorite thread on any forum.

UA gets way too many black eyes on this site compared to the other BIG 2. You work with any major corporation long enough and you will have an encounter with poor customer service. The corporation is just too big to maintain a level of quality control that will satisfy every customer 100% of the time.

With that being said, UA seems to be slowly but steadily increasing their route "risk factor" in their recent adds. Rising fuel costs would have made previous corporate officials back down from such routes, but instead they are adding. To me, the Munich-as-a-second-European-connecting-hub strategy will pay off dividends for years to come for UA and LH.

On the domestic side, the Denver strategy seems to be a series of one hit wonders to small markets with high yields. I keep waiting for some of these once a day frequencies to go to twice daily out of Denver. It feels like an organic move in that direction eventually but for now, it is just adding remote stations one or two at a time with a single flight. Obviously Denver supports connections for UA and not just O&D....and so many of those connections are high dollar ones and not throwaway fares like Big City high frequency combos (i.e. IAH-LAS, MCO-MSY, LAX-SFO, etc.).

I will be curious to see if the MIA add from IAD will follow a similar pattern. Slow, but effective one and fun to watch. I realize that the other 2 (or 3 if you count WN) are doing the same, but I was specifically talking about a single carrier that is building a very high berm around their west coast hub and continuing to raise yields at their Mountain West Domestic hub.

I had a Terminal 2 to Terminal 3 connection at LAX yesterday and it wasn’t much fun. Terminal 2 is pretty nice now but Terminal 3 still has a long way Togo and the bus situation is sub-optimal.

United served MIA-IAD and ended it in May 2014 along with MIA-CLE. I wonder why they think it's a good idea to bring it back.

Because AA is ending MIAIAD so they'll hav it to themselves.

However, now I would not be surprised if AA keeps MIAIAD in response.

DTW-SJC, its about time. Its been a pretty glaring omission for the past few years and one of the next logical adds for DL at DTW. Whats pretty interesting is how close-in they are adding this flight. We all spectulated this had a chance at being a Summer 2018 add, and when it didn't happen, then maybe Summer 2019. The fact they are adding it with on 3 month advance lead-time, and in mid-November (going into a typically slower period for business travel) shows that DL has a lot of faith in the route. Somewhat because of the growth in SJC, somewhat due to the ties between Silicon Valley and the Auto Industry, and somewhat because of SFO. I know people who regularly travel DTW-SFO and prices are very high compared to other west coast markets from DTW. Adding SJC gives DL the ability to add more capacity from DTW to the Bay Area on peak flights without having to fly "wing tip" flights to SFO.

DTW-TUL, meh oh well. I'm pretty sure like DTW-LIT its been added and dropped more than once. Currently is a CR7 route and sure seems to meet the "long and thin" test. Not a lot of natural business ties between the two markets and TUL is better connected with ATL and MSP. Plus, its a big AA market.

Like others have said, there are no immediate, concrete, firm plans to reduce the CR2 fleet in the short-term. At least for the next 1-3 years the fleet size should remain relatively static. Yes, beyond that is likely to shrink but no one really knows exactly how thats going to play out. Yes, there are a good sub-set of CR2 routes that could upgauge to CR7/CR9, but there is a sub-set, particularly all of the EAS, At-Risk, and <150 seat/day markets that are going to struggle to handle more than a CR2.

Well, DTW’s top 3 domestic routes that aren’t served in the 48 are SMF, ELP, and TUS. I suspect if SJC is like SNA, you’ll see SMF come on board next year.

Top 3 domestic in total is SMF, ANC, and HNL. The latter two are unlikely for DL to add ever. They tried and failed on ANC and HNL..unless HNL would fit well with the 339.

End TUL, LIT, and HSV. These single daily RJ flights with an average LF of 66% or less isn’t helping boost passenger traffic. Upgague OKC to 717s or A319s and begin ICT with a CRJ-700. That would be more worthwhile than holding on to 3 terrible markets.
...the carriage of liquids, gels, and aerosols are prohibited through the screening checkpoint except for travel size toiletries of 3 ounces or less...

MHT seems to be loosing capacity while BTV and BOS are gaining those seats. People in between are going to be stuck driving one direction or the other. Prices at MHT just seem so high close in, hope things turn around as it's a nice airport really being under used at this point.

There's probably enough auto industry supplier demand for HSV-DTW to sustain a non-stop.

For now yes, but by 2025...
And of course this effects other airports and by just DTW, but it’s really a shame.

Actually, the 12/17 Investor Day presentation implied there would be only about 50 CR2s in 2023.

Sure, by 2023. To imply there is going to be any additional parking of CRJ2's by the end of 2018, without an announcement, is a stretch. I'd count on most of the CR2 parking happening Dec 31, 2019... And no one has been able to answer, do the At-Risk/EAS OO birds count in that number.

"**UA IAD-MIA DEC 0>0.7[0] JAN 0>1.2[0] FEB 0>1.0[0] MAR 0>1.0[0]"

Well, well. That's been a while.

Used to be UAX - sometimes CR-7s and sometimes ERJ-170s.

Nice to see it come back. Seemed to have good loads. I hope it remains active.

It's a straight 2017 percentage of domestic seats to a 2023 % of domestic seats. On that basis about 60% of the CR2s are going away.

And yes, surely some CR2 routes will be dropped, not upgauged.

Never mind about ending HSV-DTW, the flight is being upgauged from a CRJ to a CJ7. TUL and LIT are the 2 that don't necessarily serve a purpose that can't be served through ATL. ROA and LSE got funding for DL to start DTW which would be decent choices as returning services. Both would require backtracks when connecting in ATL or MSP.

Didn't UA mention that they were going to ramp up connecting opportunities in IAD while shifting EWR to a more O&D oriented hub? Makes sense to add IAD-MIA to start funneling in North/South connections.

Filling IAD-MIA was never an issue. The issue was yield.

With
1: Atlantic yields being really good right now
2: AA ceasing service on IAD-MIA
3: UA's initiative to push more TATL flow through IAD instead of EWR

Reintroducing IAD-MIA makes a lot of sense
