AA adding DFW-CYS (Cheyenne, WY) and Sat CLT-HVN on 11/4

Fri Aug 03, 2018 7:34 pm

AA announced today that they are adding a daily DFW-CYS operated by Skywest CRJ200 and a Saturday only CLT-HVN on PSA CRJ 200.

From announcement:
If you’ve ever wanted to travel to Cheyenne, Wyoming (CYS), you now have the chance. Daily service from DFW to CYS begins Nov. 4, operated by SkyWest on a Bombardier CRJ200. In addition to this new station, we are also adding a new route to our network between CLT and New Haven, Connecticut (HVN), with year-round Saturday service. This flight will be operated by PSA on a CRJ200. The new flights to CYS and HVN will be available for sale this weekend.
717, 733, 734, 738, 744, 752, 763, 772, 77W, 789, A319, A320, A321, A332, A333, A359, MD88, CRJ, CR7, CR9, DH1, DH2, DH3, S340, ER4, E170, E175, E190/CO, NW, US, AC, NH, AA, UA, DL, WN, WS, SK, VY, LA, QF, AR, AV, MH, KA

Another former ZK only airport regaining service with Skywest. Will this be at-risk or is AA the one backing this service?

On a slightly different note, who was the last major network carrier to serve CYS?

I think AA was the last major carrier to CYS and pulled out when the funding dried up to support the route. Probably a pretty good chance that will happen again... I thought AA had pulled all the CR2's out of DFW? Haven't seen one there in my last 4-5 trips.

I really didn't expect DFW-CYS. I thought they would have gotten SLC on DL or DEN on UA first. Not trying to sound negative, this announcement just came out of left field IMO.
Long live the Boeing 757!

Agreed - I thought the Expressjet/Skywest flying (which is out of Terminal E) was all CR7s. That would be odd to have one flight a day at DFW with a CR2. Does AA fly to CYS from elsewhere with at CR2? Is the plane doing a DFW turn?

AA has the daily ORD-MEI-PIB-DFW-PIB-MEI-ORD milk run on the OO CR2. It seems like this november there will be more OOCR2s in DFW. The ExpressJet C9Y56 CRJ-700s operated for AA in DFW are also transitioning to OO.

CYS doesn't have any current commercial service since Great Lakes left so if this does end up being a CR2 it'll just be turning between the two airports.

I haven't been able to find a press release on this so if anybody has a link to the service announcement, that would be appreciated!

Cheyenne put up a $600k subsidy. I think G4 to LAS was the other option.

You realize that this plus the UA EAS like Quincy, Salina etc are all Skywest at risk flying.

Happy to see CLT-HVN beginning, I am a little sad it's Saturday service only right now but baby steps. This is the first new commercial service route HVN has had in a while.

AA should try out every Saturdays and Wednesdays. Businesses or pleasures can save money short half week expenses staying hotel and rental cars go on.. It makes sense Wed and Sat traffic is easier than wait a long week to back or going to.

AA* served CYS from DFW for about a year and a half in 2010 and 2011. Economy is much better now as well as gas prices are lower, hope it works this time. I just drove CYS to DEN two weeks ago and got stuck in traffic from Fort Collins on down for no apparent reason other than daily volume. If I lived in CYS I would definitely use my home town air service rather than making the nearly 100 mile drive to DEN.

Sat only service isn't targeted at business customers but rather leisure customers.

The problem with CYS and most other mountain markets is the fact that the demand is very day of week dependent which makes it hard to allocate planes on slower days when there are better opportunities that can support flights daily.

Everyone is so shocked by the resumption of DFW-CYS? What with additions ranging from DFW-BOI to DFW-FAR I figured it was only a matter of time before AA gave Cheyenne another shot. CLT-HVN, on the other hand, is surprising to see *after* local authorities declined the runway extension there. I guess maybe a winter seasonal service won't have to worry about weight restrictions off that short HVN runway...

If HVN-CLT is an early morning arrival on a Saturday, that would be an excellent complement for AA's impressive Caribbean flying out of CLT on Saturday mornings.

There's no skiing anywhere near CYS unless you're on skis holding a rope and being pulled on the streets by a pickup truck.

Another great addition out of CLT! I expect the frequency to increase on this route just like CLT-BGR did this year. Flew Saturday’s only last summer and is now daily in the summer.

I think this has more to do with the funding for the route than anything. On the application for funds CYS said they’d use the money to attract a leisure carrier to Vegas or Phoenix/Mesa (G4) or a carrier to DFW (AA). Knowing how federal funding works, you have to do what you said you were going to do so therefore they ended up using the money to lure AA to DFW.

Given the current oil and gas market and the connections between Texas and Wyoming in that industry I think this could attract some decent traffic until the price of oil drops again. Still not 100% sure if the route will be sustainable once funding dries up though.

DFW-CYS could work well for AA. The population in Northern Colorado has exploded since 2010-11 and it's taking longer and longer to drive to DEN from Fort Collins, Greeley, and other points north. Why fight traffic to and from DEN when CYS is right up the road and you don't have to go to battle on I-25? This could be an interesting route to watch.

I feel the same regarding ISP-CLT. One or two CRJ-700's on the route should do well. At HVN, the Phllly flights are doing very well and I was expecting a forth flight to be added. HVN can handle one daily flight to CLT so depending on the loads, hopefully it will go daily, but with a CRJ-700 as it has better short field performance.

Yes. And with mainline to boot. Look no further than GUC, MTJ, and HDN. I think G4's excuse that there was no control tower at FNL was just that. An excuse. Although to be fair, the front range is VFR flak on a nice day.

When I worked at Eagle, I did TDY at CYS a couple times and most people I saw traveling out of there were hunters.

Just noticed that in addition to DFW-CYS, AA is also starting DFW - EYW. Thought EYW runway would be too short for this.

Flights are loaded now. From routesonline.com

Charlotte – New Haven eff 22DEC18 1 weekly CRJ200 (PSA Airlines)
AA5053 CLT0735 – 0920HVN CRJ 6
AA5053 HVN0955 – 1158CLT CRJ 6

It doesn't appear timed for the Caribbean AM connections.
HVN-CLT roundtrip in January Saturday 5-12 prices at $2,063 right now for coach.
Connections through CLT are shown, but all price out over $1,000. The typical $300 to $400 roundtrips with stops through Philly are shown.

Out-going, yes. These times seem pretty bad for passengers returning to HVN from these flights. I can't help but think if this is where these flights are targeted why AA wouldn't run a routing like PHL-HVN-CLT and then later run a CLT-HVN-PHL to connect to the returning bank of flights from the Caribbean?

There's a pretty extensive 11am bank of Caribbean flights from CLT on Saturdays

Out-going, yes. These times seem pretty bad for passengers returning to HVN from these flights. I can't help but think if this is where these flights are targeted why AA wouldn't run a routing like PHL-HVN-CLT and then later run a CLT-HVN-PHL to connect to the returning bank of flights from the Caribbean?

Peace :box:

PSA flights are CLT based (either mostly or entirely), not PHL so it's probably a fleet scheduling complication.

On May 26th this year I was eating at the Chipotle just outside CYS airport having driven from Denver. I could have sworn I saw a UA mainline aircraft land there! The fact that there are no scheduled network carriers there came as a surprise/shock to me !! Good for CYS!

Your eyes probably weren't tricking you. CYS and COS are very popular diversion airports whenever poor weather moves through DEN. Not knowing what the weather was doing that specific date, this would likely be the reason. Here are some examples from July 23rd. Multiple diversions to CYS. Land at CYS, fuel up, wait for the wx to pass, fly back to DEN.

All HVN flights are PSA.

that price though...I was looking to fly down to CLT in December, but $1200 RT...jeez!!!

Also, they only operate HVN-PHL 2X on Saturdays, so there is no net gain in seats for this service.

When AA announced ORH-PHL, it was only one daily flight, now its two. I feel once time gets closer, we are over four months away from the start date, AA will add days or go daily. The New Haven area has been under served for years due to the limited runway. AA took a chance and its paying off handsomely for them with high load factors. Waiting for UA to start HVN-IAD and or HVN-EWR service.

You know, if UA is serious about turning IAD into a connecting hub like they said, I wouldn't be surprised to see them start HVN-IAD. Now what would it take to have DL start HVN-ATL?

A CS-100 or now a A220-100. Short of that, the pending court case involving the runway being decided in HVN's favor.
