I don't believe ATR72 is sanctioned anyway as 90% of the parts are not USA built.

The aircraft may not be, but the financial transaction (i.e. the payment going the other direction) would be, as any financial institutions with any business or relations (e.g. major shareholders) in US will be forbidden to facilitate such transaction. I suppose the planes would be transferred on a "delivery vs. payment" basis (i.e. delivery of "goods" and the delivery of "payment" happen at the same time)

Great news, IR really needs these birds for their regional flying. So once these are delivered, how many in total will they have?

Shame they couldn't get at least another A330 and a few A321s.

13 ATR 72, 1 A321ceo, 2 A332 have been delivered so far.

They were supposed to get another 7 ATR 72, 7 A321ceo, 8 A332, 28 A339neo, 16 A350XWB, 50 B737MAX, 15 B77W and 15 B77X.

Sadly the deal ended prematurely.

Is it really canceled or just "put on ice" until the next thaw period ?

20 ATR 72 is new to Iran Air fleet despite being operated by other Iranian carrier for past few years. It is more of market expansion into turboprop markets.
10 A332 to replace current really ageing 10 A300/A310.
28 A339neo for market expansion, ultimately replacing A332 at later years.
8 A321ceo and 50 737MAX for replacing F-100 and market expansion.
A350XWB, B77W and B77X are for replacing their previous B747 operation.

Could they get the planes if they pay before the sanctions take place?

New planes usually come with mx programs and warranties. They will just have to forgo all of this? Or will airbus be delivering a boatload or parts as well?

Yes and no. Yes, because financing for Iranian carrier was relaxed after the nuclear treaty, hence Iran Air was able to take delivery of some aircraft but it was not fast enough before US elected a new government.

No, because many foreign financial institution would not want to get themselves entangled in any dealings with Iran when US Presidential Election was at its height, and current WH resident has vehemently wanting to destroy everything that previous administration had put in place. The current sitting US administration is hell-bending to kill the deal and impose new sanction. Those agreement signed previously would be nixed any way.

And we are talking about hundreds of new aircraft, I don't think Airbus and Boeing production line can accelerate the production any faster since all slots are pre-assigned months if not years ahead, unless you have a big customer went bellied up. Leasing firms will also stay clear from lending their aircraft to any Iranian carriers.

You've forgotten the most important part: they dare to doubt the US government's divine right to decide the destinies of all peoples all over the world and to intervene (by all means, from political manipulation to war) when some do not follow the line. Which is why they are being sanctioned.

Back to topic. This really shows the importance to build complete supply chains outside of the US. When you build a product, if you want to be able to decide yourself to whom you will sell it, you must avoid having any US sourced components in it (or at least, have an alternative). COMAC, UAC, take notice.

Iran is a theocracy, that’s a religious dictatorship and your take on the situation of women in Iran make it sound like they’re respected rather than the truth—they’re severely abused.

I’m not a fan of these sanctions, but I’m even less a fan of people like you two.

ChAviation is reporting the addition of 3 more ATR72 this month

Iran Air (IR, Tehran Mehrabad) will take delivery of three more ATR72-600s despite the passing of an August 7 deadline for the winding down of all commercial aircraft sales agreements.

Speaking in Tehran during the delivery of five ATR72-600s from Avions de Transport Régional, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Farzaneh Sharafbafi was quoted by IRNA as saying the US Department of the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) had given its consent to the deliveries which will take place beyond August 7. No delivery dates were disclosed nor was any apparent mention made of the state of Iran Air's contract with Airbus.

With renewed US economic sanctions now in effect, the Minister for Roads and Urban Development, Abbas Akhoundi, said during the same press conference that EUR5 million euro (USD5.78 million) worth of US and French-manufactured spare parts had been stockpiled for the airline's use.

With the three additional aircraft, Iran Air's ATR72 fleet will grow to 16 in total. Its original order had consisted of 20 firm with options for an additional 20 of the type.

So if I got it right, the US introduced sanctions but they have given the green light for the remaining Atrs to be delivered?

I think the three ATR paperwork was being sorted out when the sanctions came into effective. Hence, consent was given as application was submitted earlier.

In a hindsight, they could have applied for seven instead of just three, oh well........

If true, I suspect OFAC consent to be, in part, because the three aircraft are ready/almost ready for delivery and that the last four are less advanced. Maybe these will gain approval later or ATR preferred to support an immediate claim for approval only for the frames that were complete.

Was looking at ATR production list, IR could have mounted a last minute plan to bring in some pre-loved aircraft. Some young ones like those of TransAsia have been in storage since the airline went bellied up. All were recently flown to EU for storage after few months in Taiwan. Missed opportunities.
