Truly unfortunate, but again an evidence that everybody is always operating at the operational edges on ground in IST; especially, foreign pilots have a hard time maneuvering through the airport with all the edges being so close.
Asiana 333 incident hitting a parking TK321 was just a few months ago...

From the images posted from Flightradar, it's pretty clear that the RAM aircraft wasn't using the correct taxiway centreline.

What is with IST as of late? Is it that overcrowded? It more so comes down to people not doing their job though.

Yes, it is that over crowded.

Go look at IST on Google maps- aircraft are stuffed at every possible open space. There is not a lot of margin for error on the taxi ways. The new airport can’t come soon enough.

Flew through there yesterday and it's extremely cramped with planes parked everywhere possible. Extremely hectic place!

We could say that the RAM 787... wait for it... rammed into the other plane :duck:
I wonder when people will understand:
Embraer 190 or simply E190, not ERJ-190. E-Jets are NOT ERJs!
Boeing 747-8, not Boeing 747-800. Same goes for 787.
Airbus A320, not Airbus 320.
Airbii does not exist.

There are 3 taxi lines at that taxiway. Two of them allow 2 narrowbody planes taxi same time. Wide bodies should go in the centerline. I guess planes taxied outer lines in both accidents.

Correct, there is a wingspan limitation on the 2 outer taxiways, thats why they are being used by narrow bodies. Either the ATC cleared him to taxi on the wrong taxiway believing the dreamliner had a narrower span, or the crew made a mistake by following the outer instead of the middle line. The 777 seems to be inside the gate this time, compared the the A321 that was hit in IST earlier.

I realize final authority rests with the Captain, but he was behind a 'follow me' car leading him?

From what I see on the video, no ‘follow me’ car, just RAM whacking the bottom of the APU off the TK.

No car is visible in the video ... unless it was a distance in front of RAM and passed by before the video started.

No need to speculate after this its exactly the explanation, very unfortunate for TK, the LH fleet is stretched thin as is...

The RAM aircraft followed the wrong taxiway centreline, simple as that. There are 3 to chose from, and it's not the most difficult of mistakes to make. I have little faith in any investigations carried out by either Morocco or Turkey, and expect this one will result in Turkey blaming the RAM crew, and Morocco blaming the confusing layout of the airport.

I've been to IST many times, most of them sat in the cockpit. I've never seen a follow-me guiding an aircraft towards or from the runway, only seen them in the final phase of taxying in. Not saying it didn't happen this time around, just that it's somewhat unlikely. But, it could be the RAM crew requested a follow-me, and it could be the follow-me was guiding them on the wrong centre-line. Which just muddies the water further, as the Captain of the RAM aircraft should have cottoned on to the fact they were on the wrong line; final authority and all that.

Yup that airport is high risk for collisions. They need that new airport ASAP.

If I could make aviation rules, I would make a rule that the outer two taxi lines be painted a different color from the middle line, and the colors should be an international standard. Eg. Neon green for code C and below, and Neon Pink for code D and above. If this were so and a misguided follow-me truck driver said to follow me on the wrong color line, the pilot would just stop following and call ATC to report the anomaly.

Yeah, what kind of ramifications will the 787 pilots face for this incident? :scratchchin:

Yep. They are pushing capacity as much as possible. There must be intense pressure to meet schedule due to the lack of gates, runway capacity, taxiway space...

The only way to mellow this out is give more elbow room, taxiways, and runways and that is the new IST...

I'm a cynic on big project schedules. From what I'm seeing on the new IST... It won't open on time. I hope to be proven wrong.

Some airports have different colored taxiways for this very reason. FRA comes to mind. Yellow center lane, blue and red outer lanes for narrowbodies.

YUL, on the western apron, had diamond shapes incorportated on the center lane to differentiate it from the two outer lanes. This is no longer the case as the apron surface was extended and two heavies can now pass side by side in that area.
us Air Traffic Controllers have a good record, we haven't left one up there yet !!

Yes that's true. But sometimes a dirt yellow line can look orange. I wonder if this had anything to do with the incident.

As other posters have commented, seems to be confusion between the narrowbody and widebody taxiways just in front of the international terminal at IST... probably not worth doing anything about since the whole place will be deserted in just 2-3 months...
