Clarification on KLM service to Boston in 2019

Fri Aug 10, 2018 11:40 pm

Dear Sages,

As reported, Klm will be introducing Service to Boston in March 2019. Routesonline.com indicates this is a resumption of service and that the last time Klm had its own metal into Boston was in 1994.

I have followed Boston aviation since the early 80s. I don’t recall Klm ever having scheduled service to Boston. They certainly had a joint venture with Northwest, but NW was always the operating carrier.

Can anyone with institutional memory help with my brain?

And the KLM service will be only 3 times a week. Given Delta flies twice a day, 3 times a week seems pretty lame.

Why lame? The DL/KL/AF JV wanted to extend services to BOS. KLM had the right plane, so added the flight.

It might be a Delta Tail on the 2-daily flight, de facto it's a joint-venture tail. The entire route is metal-neutral.

If my memory serves me right, I seem to remember NW painted a DC-10 with NW colors on one side and KLM colors on the other. Maybe this caused some people to think it was a KLM plane. Depending on which side you saw...

KLM never flew to Boston. It was always northwest metal.

The aircraft had both colors on both sides.

Apparently they planned to start it in 1993, but I can't find any other corroborating sources.

This is very similar to what KLM offers in SLC. They add onto existing Delta service and it seems to work it's been a round for a while and is on a 787-900. KLM just provides more seats on busy days even though delta offers service already.

Delta has the numbers they must see demand on a few days they can't fill, this is a boost.

Great pics of that dual painted plane, I had completely forgotten NW/KL did that to promote the First ever Global Joint Venture! NW did some pretty cool things, the World plane was another beautiful bird, and it came to life from thousands of children submitting pictures and the winning one became the plane. Now we have nothing but white planes with a color barf on the tail.

The Plane itself is probably the best marketing tool in the airlines arsenal, its a flying billboard. Its sad as he*l that most carriers don't see it that way

I would also like to see a few flights a week to SEA on KL metal.

The numbers on BOS-AMS have climbed over the last couple of years, roughly 285k made the trek there and back in 2017 on DL and they are averaging over 80% all year, so to add a 3x going up to a 4x weekly in the summer months both DL and KL (given their JV) must see the potential to add this kind of capacity on. It certainly strengthens their grip on the route and if anyone had access to slots at AMS to do this it’s KL. Down the road I could see this going daily in the summer, but let’s see how it settles down first before we start wishing for that sort of thing.

I could see that happening in the future. If KL can serve SLC, then they could probably serve SEA as well (granted, DL already has more AMS flights out of SEA than SLC does).

Reports by Routesonline.com are not always correct.
You are absolutely right, KLM has NEVER operated scheduled services to Boston with its own metal.

KLM has had a commercial presence in Boston for years, as part of the KL/NW/DL Joint Venture.
These KL codeshare flights have been operated by NW DC10/A332/A333 or DL A333/B763.

The JV has now announced a 3rd daily flight in 2019 on just 3/4 days of the week, this is a careful capacity enhancement of their existing BOS-AMS operation:

BOS-AMS-BOS for DL/KL in 2019:

- AMS 11:15 - BOS 13:11 DL/KL6017 A333 daily
- AMS 14:35 - BOS 16:47 DL/KL6031 B763 daily
- AMS 17:00 - BOS 18:30 DL/KL617 A333 Mon, Wed, Fri, Sun

- BOS 16.56 - AMS 05.50 DL/KL6030 A333 daily
- BOS 19.06 - AMS 08.10 DL/KL6016 B763 daily
- BOS 22:00 - AMS 10:35 DL/KL618 A333 Mon, Wed, Fri, Sun

The DL/KL jont venture operates similarly on:

- SLC-AMS where KLM adds a 2nd frequency 3x / week in summer
- MSP-AMS where KLM adds a 4th frequency 4x / week
- JFK-AMS where KLM added a 5th frequency 6x/week.

Didn't Delta start a simelair flight on LAX-AMS with KL taking the 'main' flight?

It will be 3x a week initially when it starts 3/31/19, growing to 4x week on 7/1/19. That's pretty impressive considering that will make BOS-AMS 3x daily on DL/KL. Some cities like MIA can't even maintain daily flights, let alone 3x daily.

My best flight ever was on that dual livery NW DC10 from AMS to BOS. The wonderfull crew just kept bringing us these small bottles of Baccardi. Slept like a baby most of the flight. Got some good advice from the flight attendant on some nice bars in Boston to.
