Honestly I’m really so surprised this doesn’t happen more often. As someone who would reposition a few 734/732 RON’s at night under power, I’m not gonna lie there was always an I wonder would it would be like to power up and just go for it moment when crossing an active.

Btw has anyone just seen the new releases footage of that actual invented loop and recovery just feet over the water? Wow

Whether you believe it or not, it's a scientific fact. It's called a "psychotic break", and you can look that term up. (I had a family member who went through that.) This is why it's usually pointless to ask "why" in cases like this (as well as in other sudden violent events); the real question, and the only thing that actually matters in terms of safety going forward, is "how". Solve the "how" and you solve the problem. Focusing on the "why" is just a distraction.

Even if there was a buildup of problems, two people can go through the same issues and one will handle them fine while the other experiences a psychotic break. There's no real way to predict which of those two people will be ok while the other does something like this. So all you can do is make it so that nobody has the means to do it. Life for anyone is just a series of problems that need to be solved, and humans all handle those problems differently.

I'm not a mechanic so I don't know what security protocols are already in place. But I would think there has to be a way to keep a mechanic from stealing a plane. I mean, I dunno, make it so that two people are always watching the planes in the hangar, or make it so you need a security code to start a plane's engines, or whatever... there are any number of ideas. It's not impossible for a company to keep better control than this on its employees and assets.

From Alaska Twitter:

We've confirmed a Horizon Air Q400 that had an unauthorized takeoff from SeaTac around 8pm has gone down near Ketron Island in Pierce County, WA. We're working to confirm who was on board, we believe there were no guests or crew on board other than the person operating the plane.

This very sad, loss of life always is. I'm surprised that something like this can happen. Then again, as someone said earlier, it would be very difficult to prevent authorized people from doing crazy things... it is not as if perimeter security failed, for instance.

Sure, and in a broader context, that's sobering. In this case, though, he really didn't sound like he was looking to hurt someone. He really just sounded like something clicked from "sane" to "insane" (for lack of technical knowledge) and not that he was looking to harm anyone. Sort of a "going out in style" vs "going out taking as many as I can". He even referenced in his communications feeling bad for what he was doing and how it would make his family feel. In his own words, he was broken, wanted to have a bit of a final experience, then be done.

Wow, the photos are incredible.

Did PDX also experience a ground stop while these jets were scrambled?

Was air traffic around SEA put in a special holding pattern that is different than other ground stop holding patterns due to the stolen aircraft flying in the area?

No. There was no groundstop at PDX.... Planes aren't put into holding when there is a groundstop at a particular airport. A groundstop only relates to traffic that has not yet departed. Arrivals may have been stopped but that is not a groundstop.

Can one figure out how to fly one of these with just a sim? I pretty much figured out a 172 without ever going on any sort of sim in my life and my instructor was pretty quite the whole first lesson. Of course they are very, very different but with months on a sim could it be done?

Props to everyone involved, the ATC controler he was talking to was amazing, while they have training in hijackings this was totally different, the way he responded to some of the stuff Rich was saying was very well done in trying to encourage him down and to at least not hurt anyone else. One that stands on to mean was how he calmly responds to Rich's joke about getting a job as a pilot if he puts it down "I'm sure they'd give you a job doing anything if you can pull it off" better than most police negotiators i recon!

For some folks, the dream of flying is just too far away. FSX is the closest they will get. Cost, time, responsibilities, medical status, whatever. They love the planes, they love the bustle, but working for an airline is as close as they will ever get to that dream. I have known a lot of people like that over the years, Hell, I was one of them.

Luckily, I was able to fulfill that dream. For others....

I have video of the roll and flip he did, but do not know how to post videos. He either practiced in sim or got insanely lucky on the roll over, maybe both. The communication makes it sound like it was actually luck.

According to a source I know who works at SeaTac and was on duty tonight, it was a Horizon ramper. He was observed watching videos on how to fly a Q400 the previous day by coworkers. The aircraft had apparently just been ferried in from YYJ due to mechanical issues and he was pushing it back to a spot away from the terminal until MX personnel could get to it. I suppose that's when he went rogue and took control of the aircraft.

Re: Updated: AS employee steals and crashes Q400 at SeaTac

Sat Aug 11, 2018 7:01 am

From Alaska Airlines:

Update: 11:54 p.m. on Aug. 10, 2018
Alaska Airlines believes a ground service agent employed by Horizon Air was the individual responsible for flying the Horizon Q400 without clearance from Sea-Tac International Airport around 8 p.m. tonight.

The plane, which was taken from a maintenance position and was not scheduled for passenger flight, crashed about an hour later in a wooded area on Ketron Island in rural Pierce County. No ground structures were involved at the crash site.

Military jets were scrambled from Portland, but it does not appear that these jets were involved in the crash of the Horizon aircraft.

This individual who took the aircraft, who has not yet been positively identified until remains are examined, is believed to have been the only person on the plane when the plane was taken from a maintenance position at Sea-Tac.

First responders are at the crash site. Appropriate government agencies, including NTSB, FAA and FBI, have been notified.

I don't believe in people snapping

That's great. Snapping isn't a medical term as you've stated. Someone who experiences a brake probably had something traumatic happen to them, it doesn't come from nowhere which is my point. There is no way to determine what happened, and no way of preventing it.
oh boy, here we go!!!

I know I'm a bad person, but I just can't handle the panicky response. I think it's from raising a daughter who specialized in drama.
